Kind of a strange speech by Donald Trump at the UN today. I detected two strands. The authentic Trump i thought was the one who extolled the Nation State; national sovereignty and an end to America's role as global policeman; proponent of Global Free Market Capitalism; imposer of American culture and values on 'oppressed' states. Replaced with a policy agenda in support of reestablishment of borders with respect to people, product, culture, political systems and the primacy of national sovereignty.
The other was the one railing against rogue states who do not submit to American standards of international 'citizenship'. Of equating Socialism (a word so overworked that it has lost all definition) with tyranny and economic dissolution. Of reasserting America's hemispheric political supervision of the Americas.
It seems aimed at two different audiences. The first to his nationalist base. The second to the Reaganite NeoCons of the Republican Establishment. I know the latter's principles of Free Trade, Open Borders, Cultural Relativism, anti-Federalism are irreconcilable with the former in the long term. Economic Nationalism will require Nationalist, Populist, Dirigiste and Progressive policies of an active and engaged Federal Government. This is an anathema to the NeoCons. They consider that 'Socialism'.
I'm waiting for this to break apart in the near to medium term future. And the Trump Administration to show its real colours, for better or worse.
