Ken King, President of the Calgary Flames addressed the media today. The Saddle Dome is a complete write-off from the 8th level down and sits under 15 feet of water. Dressing rooms, kitchen, memorabilia, all mechanical equipment and electronics except the jumbotron - gone. Any assessment of structural damage will have to wait until the water can be pumped out. The next scheduled event for the Dome was to take place during the Stampede due to get underway on July 5th - the Stampede grounds themselves are also underwater.

Means nothing without a caption!

I look at the photo and see hundreds of different stories begging to be told. Tales of lives forever changed by the flood. Where the photo was taken is but a part of the story. What the photo tells of us of the misery caused by the flooding is another. Both are important. IMHO.

Seems the world is paying attention to the flooding. Aljazeera, Washington Post, Reuters and Fox News all have stories on the flooding.

Someone ought to be fired if they weren't stripping what they could from the place. It's not like they didn't have warning that it was going to be flooded.

He did mention that they were able to rescue some memorabilia but did not address when that happened. Apparently the Dome has full insurance coverage - they have been contacted but the club is going ahead with plans to start re-building. Equipment etc is all ready on order. But the big hurdle is getting rid of the water and I didn't hear when that may start.

The warning period was less than 8 hours and people have to deal with their own concerns and those of their families first. If I was an arena employee and my house was floating away, I wouldn't give a sh*t about damage to the arena. My loved ones life and limbs come first, thank you very much!

Apparently to replace the Saddle Dome is a 21/2- 3 year undertaking. Perhaps the Flames will have to brush up on their street hockey skills. -:)

Listening to reports from Calgarians the water rose so fast in some areas they didn't have a chance to do anything but get out.

Ken King looked like he had been poleaxed, JLM.......truly. NHL commish Bettman and CFl Commish Mark Cohon both contacted King to offer their help.

Yeah, I watched a little of Ken King an hour or so ago.

Being neighbors they could play in Edmonton.

Yep, possibly on a street where the traffic is heavy! -:)

I think somebody was asleep at the switch, it was know at least two days earlier that there was going to be 100 mm of rain in a short time, like a day or so.

I don't understand now why our city is making like this was a big surprise!!
What do you expect with a 100 mm of rain in a day???

So with the flood in 2005 and this year should or can they do what Winnipeg did with the diversions. I do not know the terrain.

No, the Winnipeg type diversion is not possible with the Calgary layout.
We are just going to have to live with what we have. But with proper planning its possible to minimize the damage. It shouldn't happen to often,,,,hopefully !!

Damages will hit 10 Billion or more. Is it then possible.

It might be a bit high for just Calgary, but if you include all the towns/cites and all the road damage, it's probably going to be over 10 Billion.

Hahaha Redford had 400 million in her budget !! What a joke!! She also had the dollar pegged at $0.99 (?) /US,, for the Budget,,, what a dumbo!!!

How much money would you have had in the budget if you were her? There's a lot more to it than the actually inches of precipitation. On the west coast of British Columbia 5" in one day is fairly common, it has more to do with the degree of saturation when the storm starts and whether or not the precip is falling on frozen ground, and wind is another factor. Rain and floods are just one emergency to prepare for, tornados aren't beyond the realm of possibility, neither are earthquakes, hailstorms, forest fires, so maybe before people go blabbing off about the budget they may want to get educated. -:)

Every year there is a disaster of one form or another .
Everybody knows (except you obviously ) that $400 million gets you almost nothing today in any disaster!!
