he said he didn’t initially expect to face blatant ignorance and insults.
Stars in his eyes-small town Canada is a hell hole for someone with any imagination and creativity.

Heck most of Canada is a hellhole for the same type-look @ the drivel posted upthread by the usual lowbrow suspects.

Neither you nor Gerry read my post properly, but of course if you are looking to attempt to bully me for my attitude, well good luck.

I had/have no problem reading and understanding your ignorant, bigoted, and homophobic posts.

This is what you said.

It seems some peeps found they could not bully country folk. Anyone who wants to change my mind about queers needs to be able to deal with me. I don't believe in saying a word if they keep it to themselves, but looking for trouble will get them plenty from me.

The definition of bully:

bul·ly 1 (b
l
)n. pl. bul·lies 1. A person who is habitually cruel or overbearing, especially to smaller or weaker people.
2. A hired ruffian; a thug.
3. A pimp.
4. Archaic A fine person.
5. Archaic A sweetheart.
Perhaps you meant it in the archaic sense of the word? Barring that someone asking you a question of how opening a restaurant equates to "looking for trouble" is hardly bullying you. For that matter, opening a place of business is hardly bullying anyone in the town. If someone doesn't want to eat there, for whatever reason, then they simply don't and they are not damaged in any way, shape or form. For any of the "country folk" to go out of their way to cause trouble for these guys crosses a line. No different than folk causing trouble for someone because they don't like the colour of their skin, or where they worship. So who is bullying who here?

Or am I bullying you simply by asking the question?

The joint closed simply because not enough people ate there, not because of the attitude of the townspeople towards queers.
The bullying came more from the restaurant owners toward the town after they failed. If you believe all of what a local rag prints then we need to not talk.
If you think someone crossed a line then what will you do? Bully them? Nah, you can only attempt to act sophisticated.

Gays are like Chinamen. Every small town has a couple.

That was not particularly enlightened. But as far as the restaurant is concerned, if they served good
food at reasonable prices, they would probably still be in business.

That's what I am saying. Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding. C'mon... nobody is going to buy that on a regular basis.

Were they licensed? If you don't have booze, you're going to fail on the Prairies. Whetting the whistle is just as import as food quality or variety of menu.

Oh brother... if they didn't have a booze license... forget it!

Exactly, licenses go to the hotels in small town Canada and in MB hotels were bought out by foreigners who can't cook so they buy into Chicken Chef heat and eat. Beer and pizza is a sure thing.

In a restaurant you need to serve food that people will go to eat regularly.

Just a hunch... these two gentlemen were losing money in their biz. Think about it... a town of 1,700 and they're serving that stuff.

"that stuff"??

Presumably there were other choices on the menu. I don't see anything wrong with roast beef being one of the choices.

On the other hand, What sort of ignorant savages would object to roast beef ?

If they were rolling in money and the restaurant was a smashing success, they would remain open even if somebody burned a cross on their front yard. They were struggling and decided that their monatary intake was not high enough to endure the small town charm and decided to close. They are choosing to blame the insults but more than likely the real culprit is a failed business model.

As to why it failed it may not be the menu. It may be location or the look of their building. Or maybe there is some competition or the people of the area don't like roast beef or prefer KFC or fast food. Many businesses fail for many reasons. I don't see this one as different.

Not that I condone anybody making rude comments but quite frankly, people who go to restaurants are sometimes quite rude.

My guess is the restaurant owner ran into the one or two town bullies.. rage-aholics looking for any target to vent an amorphous anger of their own failures and frustrations.

I'm sure many of the town's religious or conservatives have a deep sense of disorder and incoherence with homosexuality.. but see no need to affirm.. or to take issue with it on a personal basis unless it is thrust at them as demand that they do so (as is happening with the homosexual movement).

Almost all of us have worked with homosexuals or had some social liaisons that have included them.. and it never comes up in the conversation, certainly not as a point of rancour.. unless it is pressed on one as a flagrant political position.. a take it or leave it proposition.

It's much more likely to become an issue if it is imposed on a small homogenous community.. than in a large city.. all of which have 'gay villages'.. stretching back decades.

You get what I mean. Of course there were other dishes on the menu.

I love roast beef... but when I go out to dinner I am not getting roast beef. I'll get that at mom's on Sunday.

Small towns only appear to be charming. There's a lot of politics goes on to keep 'em that way.

I hear you Sheriff!
