I am anti-gun, anti-violence. I don’t understand why people in a civilized country need to be running around carrying guns. I don’t understand why I as an older female would have to feel unsafe in my home or walking down the street because I don’t want to carry a gun, learn to shoot or have such an atrocity in my home.

But according to what I am reading in this thread, and in the news media, the best country in the world ( or at least they purport to be) can’t keep anyone safe from the (bad guys). Because if they start somewhere and try to clean up this wild west mentality, only the criminals will have guns and then wow, they will just slaughter everyone. No one can be trusted to help another human being so everyone one must be armed to the teeth.

I think the “take care of me mentally” sucks. I don’t want to live in such a country, I don’t want to live in such a world, and I don’t want to live with such people.

What is disturbing me the most are the feeds on Facebook. I used to play a lot of games on there. I have a large amount of “friends” on there. As the games got discarded the people did not because I came to know many of them on a deeper level. The greater majority are American. They want their guns. They keep running stats and posters on their feeds encouraging others to post these stats and feeds. They do not want to lose their guns. In fact, they are panicking and buying more guns. They do not like Obama, they do not think he is American. They are pro babies, guns and god.

The thing is, the stats and feeds are inaccurate or skewed. I see other (facts) that they post; nobody checks Snopes or even the news. It is just taken and puked out as given that if it agrees with their feeling of the moment, then it is right. And that terrifies me because they have guns, they carry guns and they want more guns, cause god knows, one is not enough.

They want to walk around with guns. They don’t know the difference between; to, two, or too, there, their or they’re, and they use words like aint but they want to carry guns and that mentality is deeply disturbing to me. There’s no nuance, there’s no subtly it’s all just "in your face". This is who I am they say, take me or leave me. Art, literature and learning for the sake of learning is something quite foreign to them. That is how they live. Good people for the most part, if they consider you as one of theirs, you are safe I guess.

Truly it bothers me.

This is going to go to a very bad place because they are going down a very sketchy road, have been for too many years and the road is long and winding and black. I have no answers and the more I read, the more I question man’s humanity to man (or lack thereof). I think people can live in harmony but I do not think stocking each home with guns is a step toward that harmony.

Let's grind the numbers.
There are 130 000 public and private schools in 'Merica.
Since most schools have students from 8:00 am to early evening or later (sports, extra- curricular junk, etc.), and some schools have large student populations (not large in size but rather number), a minimum of two resource officers (gunslingers) would be required per school.
Let's see..
2 x 130 000 = 260 000
Wow, that would reduce unemployment dramatically.
Each resource officer would require training, support, offices, uniforms, gear, and of course, a salary and benefits. Hmmm...
That's approximately $100 000 per officer per year.
Let's see...
260 000 x $100 000 = $26 000 000 000 per year.
A fiscal drop in the bucket... and if successful would guarantee a Democratic president elect for decades.
Let's see...
Per decade, that's $260 000 000 000 or half the Canadian debt.
Sweet. What is a life worth?

I am anti-gun, anti-violence. I don’t understand why people in a civilized country need to be running around carrying guns.
Where did you get the idea humans were tame and civilized? We're the meanest animal on the this planet.

I hear you but first we have to recognize two facts of life. MOST people who own guns don't do so with the intent of perpetrating acts of violence, and second not all our co inhabitors of the planet are nice people and that is not likely to change. As for Facebook I have very little to do with it, but as far as the big picture is concerned, it don't think it has done much to improve humanity. Too much crap that is posted there ends up where it was never intended. What is wrong with corresponding by email? It works well for me. (but then that's me, a selfish thought I guess-:)

I agree they may not do so with intent, but if you carry a gun sooner or later you are going to use it. Also once one uses it, can they live with it? Armchair soldiers, actually killing someone carries a very, very steep price.

Oh but they would ONLY use it if their life was threatened. I don't think the average person down there has that capability. Truly I don't.

So you need a gun?

Exactly, hang out there for a while, it will make you anti-gun in a hurry.

Email is good, but this is social media, a whole different world with a whole different purpose. I am still not tweeting but probably will be soon as I know I am behind there. Even the job world requires that one be proficient at such things now.

We are the meanest and the most violent, we keep people down by ensuring they receive little to no education and we leave them living without access to proper food and water and the basic amenities of life and then we allow them guns so that they can take it from us by force. And they do.

I choose to live in a tamer place with a higher regard for life and support for my neighbours. Most of the people around me have probably never seen a gun and wouldn't want to own one. I can walk to my mall, hassle free. I don't worry about ending up dead because I have driven into the wrong neighbourhood. I am hoping to maintain that lifestyle until death. I am hoping the world will evolve instead of devolve. I know such fine people, that I still have hope. :)

Look at the kinds of TV shows that hollywood churns out and these people absorb. Many can no longer discern the difference between fact and fiction. Go to a gathering and many are discussing what happens in their fav soap like it is reality. Yet they never watch the news because it is too "depressing" or too "violent"

Try thinking more in terms of shooting the winter's meat supply or using it on the farm to dispatch predators that dine on lambs, calves etc.

isn't that the truth... and funny thing about violent videos too... in Japan they are technologically advanced and their videos are equally violent and wow, few deaths by guns...why, no access.

Honey Boo boo; the latest craze... how low can we go? Talk about depressing. That depresses me...Mob Wives, check that one out.

Except most people are urban. Where I live, coyotes do come in so you have to watch your pets, because we have a lot of green pockets. I still don't need a gun.

But many of us do. The problem with laws is that they tend to apply to everyone and laws that may suit citiots generally have a negative effect on those of us that live in rural areas. And most laws still only affect honest taxpayers. The criminals tend to ignore laws.

Being "urban" doesn't preclude person from hunting for the winter's meat supply!

If there is "gun control" who, where, when, why, I don't have a problem with that. Just because I live in a city and don't own a gun doesn't make me an idiot and doesn't mean I shouldn't have a say in who can carry one and the requirements for doing so. Not only criminals ignore laws, we all do. Not all criminals carry guns.

So you need an arsenal and assault rifles? I'm guessing that isn't what you meant?

Why would gun control stop you from sport hunting, or sport shooting for that matter?

So you want to arm everyone... I don't know where you live but I live in a relatively peaceful, safe environment. Seems most pro gun here live in a wild west environment just saturated with criminal elements out to kill them.

Might be time to move.

Maybe by putting so many regulations and fees, that it becomes a sport for the wealthy ?

I am not trying to force anything on anyone, I am just looking on, shaking my head and wondering where all this is going. Gun up and run wild, *shrug* I think it is more than a step backward and I think human life deserves more than a split second thought while some armed fool blows them away because they feel it is their right.

Maybe. But if you want to own and carry, you'd best come up with some saftey rules because they seem in short supply in the discussion here.

Weirdly, to what you're say'n...there hasn't been a 'suspicious death' in your
neighbourhood in what? A couple of hours? I too have never been held up, &
at one point years back lived just off the corner of Rettalack & 5th.
