What good is defecit spending if a big chunk is to subsidize food? How can you borrow to eat and keep things at status quo?

How many aren't? How long will subsidies/tax breaks last? What does having less to eat mean for the entire economy and health/productivity of Canada?

Probally lots...to many, I suspect though that this is less of a problem for G8 countries as it is for others.

You tell me how to fix it?

You certainly seem aware of the facts that "jackass" was talking about.

Good question because the true fix is to let the developing world develope but that goes against everything pitched by the "sustainable growth" green crowd.

Or we can have "social leveling" like in the good ol' days of Lennin and Trotsky.

Have you heard anyone pitch that yet with agro subsidies funded by the G8 etc?

So grow and consume until nothing is left.

I said that already.

That is one of the the arguments the "jackass" puts forth.

The invention of the credit card helps us consume beyond our means.

Nope.

I don't have to watch any video, to know one solution is to start salvaging for use and reuse all the stuff that is going into landfills. People have to stop the habit of getting rid of stuff just because it has a scratch or they are getting tired of it. How much useless paper comes in our door every day? I'll bet if all the metal lying around rusting was put to use, we could stop mining for a year. Make a law about planned obsolescence- look at computers, obsolete in a year. Why do we have to buy new electronics all the time with the accompanying housing when we can simply install new chips, transistors etc? Look at the food being wasted. What do restaurants do with all the bread crusts? When they crack an egg and the yolk breaks what happens to the egg? In the garbage? In short, STOP THE WASTE.

You should watch the video.

Food subsidies began shortly after WWII long before there was easy credit. The Feds are putting the subsidies on VISA?

Scroll back I already posted it.

Fun to watch a capitalist promote socialism.
Promote it? It pisses me off.

It was a comment about debt.....which grows every year.

Consumer debt in Canada is now the highest per capita of the indutrialised world.

As it should.

Scroll back I already posted it.

I'd be happy to read it if you gave me the link to the 95% thingy.

A page that backs up your claim.

Just curious.

Without the subsidies since the 50's we'd still be spending 60% of our income on food and the consumer glutony and waste that is allegedly killing the planet would have never existed.

At some point all those debts will be called in.

Another big bank bailout is just around the corner which means the inflation faerie is going to leave a big juicy **** under our pillows.

How many peas are in an i-Pod?

It's the history of consumerism in a sustainabilty thread. It's on track.

Is it?

One minute you make an argument against subsidies then you make one for them.

You pull numbers out of the air and link a page with a thousand other links and say 'it's all there' like that is proof.

You call Dr Reese a jackass then spew out some of the very things he talks about.

I don't know where you get the stuff buddy but mail me some of that weed you smoke.

Take care.:canada:

Where do I argue in favour of a global socialist system?

I will go straight back to square one and say a lot of people are going to have to die in the very near future.

I hope it's not you. You still have a lot to learn about the green bull**** you promote. I want you to live a long life with the deaths of billions on your hands.

Me? I'm all for it.

Take Care!

I agree with pretty well everything the guy says, just a little disappointed my own individual contribution doesn't count for much. I think the carbon tax per se is the way to go- just a little skeptical that it just might add to the swill in the trough.

In America backyard gardens are illegal unless you have a brand name.

SEC. 401. PROHIBITED ACTS.

It is prohibited--

(1) to manufacture, introduce, deliver for introduction, or receive in interstate commerce any food that is adulterated, misbranded, or otherwise unsafe;

How many aren't? How long will subsidies/tax breaks last? What does having less to eat mean for the entire economy and health/productivity of Canada?

The law pertains to commerce across state lines. Backyard gardens are not illegal under this law.

Upon further thought about the video, one thought does keep gnawing away at me. He thinks there is a lot society as a whole can do but not much he can do personally. How about walking more, planting a garden, making the old beater (lawn mower, dishwasher) last another year? Turn the thermostat down 2C?

The cheep food policy in developed countries now sees the age of farmers in the first world
is in the fifties. In the developed world you are likely right. Even the aid agencies are helping
farmers to grow enough food for themselves and immediate neighbours, or subsistence farms.
China is growing food that the world once thought would see exports compete with the world.
That is not going to happen The rising middle class in China will see the opposite effect as
middle class incomes will buy most of the food produced and there could be food shortages
in Asia. It is now fact, South American farms are being purchased by China and even India
for the purpose of shipping food back to those Asian countries. The next land to be purchased
will be in North America. As we abandoned family farms, because we are not prepared to pay
for the cost of production in North America, many will pay extensively more once the shortages
start here, as food is shipped by foreign companies back to their home country.
I explain it this way when speaking to media and other.

There is a big difference between saying You cannot have a sandwich and There is no
sandwich.

We as a society will do nothing until we are confronted with a crisis and that is coming in spades
within this next decade. Drought, over population, rising incomes in developing countries and the
increased competition for food will drive prices much higher.
An NO the socialist collective farm concept will not work it never has anywhere it been tried in any
form. In fact socialized farming would be a disaster that would set the world food production levels
ever lower for at least a generation.

I'm pretty sure that you are better at reading than that.

You do yourself a disservice by making completely bizarre claims, and deliberately misreading things.
Must be a slow week out there.

I think it all boils down to what I've been saying for years- the world as we know it is going to end in the next generation or two, caused by man's laziness and greed.

I think a couple things will eventually happen.

a) We are going to have massive conflicts, particularly in Africa and Asia, because as a species, our population is unsustainable, especially with the rate of growth in developing nations. North America may not be immune to this but will be less vulnerable because of geography. Europe may have a rough time though, because of land bridges to other areas of conflict.

b) Foreign ownership of agricultural companies may not be disallowed but 1st world nations, like Canada and the US will nationalize their agricultural sectors before they allow their people to starve... possibly triggering further conflict. Our gov'ts may seem to be powerless but we have to remember that we still hold trump cards over foreign investors, in terms of the gov't being able to enact some pretty drastic measures if need be, to ensure the survival of our respective countries.

It sounds almost like a "Mad Max" kind of scenario but I don't see how its unavoidable in the long term unless there are some rapid and massive technological leaps in food production.

This fraud is nothing but the even phonier re-incarnation of Paul Ehrlich of the 1970's who in his usual wisdom (typical of all those who are of the belief that humans are just another version of animals) claimed that the world would die of starvation in ten years.

Thirty years later we are still here. Forty years later some farmers are still paid NOT TO GROW food. Forty years later, as the video example clearly shows, some alarmists are incurably stuck in their chicken-little world.

Pity that they are otherwise normal people who believe this utter bull crap.
