One of the first things you learn in addictions counseling is about enablers.

One would think that an addiction counsellor making excuses for his own kids would know this, but then again, in my experience, many counsellors have zero idea what's going on with their own families.

Yes, she has a disease. It is called Narcisicism. She truly believes that the rules of society do not apply to her, that she has the total and complete right to behave exactly as she chooses to behave at any time.

The fact that she may well have a physical addiction to drugs and/or alcohol is primarily due to her concept that she has the right to take anything she wishes to take, at any time, and that nothing should ever be done about this.

I blame her parents for raising her that way. They indulged her in every way possible, promoted the concept that she was something "special", and that rules simply did not apply to her.

Until she truly reaches bottom, there is very little chance that she will change her behavior. I just hope, that for her sake, bottom is not killing herself with an overdose.

I'm sorry..."she 'doesn't have a choice'"?!?!?! Since when?
Is not like she had a cancer for crying out loud! In that case people always have a choice, not doing drugs! I understand its hard for some people to have control in life, but at least with all the money she have, she could have big professional help much better than a rehab, maybe a full time chaperon or so many other things she have the chance to do it and other people dont.
How does she contribute to the good of society? Other people should been noticed and appreciated than her and other insignificant celebrities...

Baldwin: 'Lohan has a disease'

Daniel Baldwin (WENN.COM file photo)

Daniel Baldwin is urging the public not to judge Lindsay Lohan too harshly - insisting the troubled star's problems are not her fault because addiction is "a disease".
Lohan was released from a California jail on Monday after serving less than two weeks of a 90-day sentence for violating her probation relating to a 2007 DUI arrest.
She has now checked into rehab to spend 90 days receiving treatment for her addictions as part of her sentence.
Baldwin, who spent years battling a raging drug habit and endured nine stints in rehab, insists Lohan deserves sympathy because she "doesn't have a choice" when she turns to alcohol or illegal substances.
He tells TV show Larry King Live, "This woman has a disease. She doesn't have a choice in it. She has a disease. So it's not a fault thing. It's now a matter of whether or not she's going to go and get her (therapy) and decide that she's going to try to beat this disease, or she's going to succumb to it and end up killing someone in a car or die of an overdose...
"It's no different than any other disease. She suffers from an affliction that is treatable, and she can keep it in remission. But there is no cure for addiction."

And Baldwin is adamant Lohan needed to be forced into rehab by the courts otherwise she might never have addressed her problems. He adds, "Lindsay is Lindsay's own worst enemy right now. She just keeps getting her way, because she won't surrender to the fact that she has this disease and this problem. So it's going to probably take the L.A. court system and a smart judge to put the screws to her a little bit to get her to see the light of day."

That's bullsh*t, call it what you want, she has a problem for sure (I feel sorry for people with addictions) but she got herself into it, so she (with help) is going to have to get herself out of it. Hope the rest of you potential addicts are paying attention (only an idiot repeats someone else's stupidity).

Talking about celebrities is for people that live in L.A.

And no one wants to be like that.

Often artistic or creative people have been gifted with insecurity along with their positive talents

I am not making excuses because we are all in this pot together and what we make of our lives - in order to find our place - our satisfaction - our happiness - is entirely choice by self as well.

I wonder if artistic people are limited in their belief of acceptance of self in their world - they go through the enormous emotional upheavals, find remedies to "cure or aid" such as alcohol or drugs or promiscuity - or even more weird things such as daring life itself through danger -

Maybe it is a trade for being gifted - however I think Lohan has pre-empted what talent she may have developed because I think she is/was nowhere near being a "great" actress.

I do know one thing - it takes a huge will to overcome addiction.

Yep, right on. It seems that gifted people have to take (stupid and unnecessary risks) and also try to impress the wrong people, often alienating family and the ones who love them.
