Oh and two things:

If you do get a lawyer and tell them exactly what you just said here, then they'll pretty much tell you to do the exact same things I just said, because most will know what you just confessed to and they are not supposed to lie to the courts in the first place.

Secondly, towards posting this little confession and IP addresses, sure I doubt the police will be purposely looking for you in these forums.... but do any of you seriously believe nobody in these forums won't report this to the police? Publicly admitting a crime and going into detail, while having your IP address easy to obtain by anybody on here (or even not on here) makes it pretty easy for someone to track your IP address to a Province/State, City/Town, ISP provider and for them to contact the police and say "Hey, you might want to look into this...."

Hell, if I was a real jerk, I could do this myself, if I was so inclined to do so.

Good point in your first post, Praxius; even the smartest of men will trip in the net of their lies sooner or later.

Firstly, you are trying to link a confession to who exactly? An IP address could belong to any number of people. Secondly, I highly doubt the cops would subpoena both his ISP & Andem's server in Germany over a suspected DUI.

Maybe not, but the simple fact that he had fled from the scene of the accident shows how stress and fear can impede the logical thought processes of even an intelligent person.

Though the police might never even find out about this site, it still doesn't change the fact that if OMG is under so much fear that he'd flee from the scene of an accident even though he knows it's a silly thing to do, there's no telling what other booboos he might do along the way. It's not a matter of intelligence, but rather the common sense notion that when you're under extreme fear and the adrenaline is pumping through your veins, though you could probably run and fight just as well as any athlete, your brain is not as engaged as it normally would be.

Under the conditions, to avoid making more booboos, it's probably wise to just be honest and say what happened rather than set up a trap for himself.

Also, consider that the police could Google a few terms just to see if they find anything on some forum. In cyberspace, they'd likely not find this site among the mass of sites they could find, but they could get lucky. If they do, they would then simply need to search a few place names under OMG's username and see if he's ever admitted on this forum to have lived in that town, etc.

Not likely to happen, but the fact that the possibility is there and that OMG posted this anyway is another indication of how adrenaline makes us do silly things no matter how intelligent we might be.

Playing "Devil's Advocate", I'm thinking OMG isn't the guilty party at all, but is just doing this exercise for his friend.

Except that it would exempt the friend from being traced through the forum. Nobody obviously would be looking for OMG.

Still, if the perpetrator, whoever he is, fled the scene of an accident, then clearly his brain is flooded by a bit of adrenaline. It's just a matter of time before he starts to contradict himself to police if he tried the less than honest approach.

Firstly, you are trying to link a confession to who exactly? An IP address could belong to any number of people.

That depends... take, for example, a situation where someone threatens someone's life on a forum. Normally those moderating the forum in question would see that, report it to their local ISP, that ISP would know who used/had that IP addressed at the time of the post, know who's account that is, and take proper action.

In this case, one finds the ISP, finds out which account/home address used that IP address at that time, contact the police in that area, they look into their active cases, find the guy who's currently being charged/investigated for said crime, match this admission to the information in the case they're investigating, plus his address matching the address of the IP address used, and that could be considered credible evidence against said person.

There are many legal cases that use information/posts from emails, myspace, facebook, forums, etc. in court cases, which are obtained through IP Addresses, which most ISP's keep track of.

Secondly, I highly doubt the cops would subpoena both his ISP & Andem's server in Germany over a suspected DUI.

They don't have to.

As said before, someone in here, or even a mod who is inclined to do so, can get the IP info. Mods can get the IP info through their tools running the forum, and regular members can get a hold of various programs that can gather IP information as well.

There are also plenty of web sites online that you can enter an IP address into which will in turn, tell you where that IP address is located, what company owns that IP address, and the location right down to the town/city where that IP address was used.

As an example:

What Is My IP Address? Lookup IP, Hide IP, Change IP, Trace IP and more...

^ Click on there and it'll tell you your IP Address, what ISP owns that IP, the account that used it and show you on a map where you are.

Got me down pretty good.

Getting IP information isn't that hard.

No, entering the IP into a search engine isn't hard. But what's his IP?

Like I said, if I was inclined to do so, I could find out, which I did do a number of years ago over a few things. But I am not a mod here, nor recently have I installed a program to check, so at present I don't know.

Just do a quick google search for "IP Address Tracking Program" and there's plenty out there available for anybody to purchase or download for free.

Ok soo..I got into a bit of trouble over the weekend and I was hoping someone might be able to help me out..
I was driving without my lisense because I had lost it when I slightly bumped into the car infront of me at the red light. Not to mention I had been drinking so should not have been driving in the first place. I completely freaked out and parked my car..and I left it there.
My friend who was still in the car was completely drunk.
So the people who i hitt called the cops and the cops came and my car got towed..
Anyways the cops called my parents and told them I left and that i may have been drinking..since thats what the witnessses had said.
Right now my car is still at the impound and they said I cant take it out for A MONTH because the police seized it..
Does anyone know what I should do now? Or what will happen..
Can they give me a DUI ..since they dont have prooof, besides their word?
I was going to say I had not been drinking, that i was the d.d for my friend and that I shouldnt of left but I completely freaked out because I realized I didnt have my ID and i didnt want to get in trouble so I left to go grab a cab and get it..by the time i came back my car was towed?
Or..i dont know..im pretty freaked out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

also ..if your going to respond to this telling me im an idiot for drinking and driving please don't. Ive definetly learned my lesson.:banghead:
From what I can see is they cannot do anything about a DUI, but they can logically charge you with "leaving the scene", "negligent driving", and "driving without a license".
You weren't being very bright.
See a lawyer and tell her/him the truth.

You're right, getting an IP is easy, but an IP can be easily concealed via proxy servers, or if the person is leaching a random wifi connection, or it's a college, anything that has a router behind their connection.

True, but in this case, he noted the police called his parents. Now logically if he was of age and an adult, they would have called him, not his parents.

Secondly, if they contacted his parents, it would be logical to assume he still lived with them. Since they called his parents, they now know who his parents are, thus their address, thus his address. Not to mention who he is.

Now hypothetically, if the IP address noted in his post matches the IP Address used at his parents house and their internet/computer... it'd be kinda hard to explain that away.

Granted, if he used an internet cafe, library or school computer to post, it'd be quite difficult to identify him.... however, considering the mistakes he claims he already made, and the mistake of admitting to a crime here.... I wouldn't put it past him that he also made the mistake in using his parent's internet at home to post, which the police could easily find out, since based on given information, they already have half the information they require.

To the people here who have such good advice I have a question...

If OMG had remained in the car and called the police giving them his location asking for assistance, would it have been a better choice than leaving the scene?

Anyone know how the law enforcement would have viewed it?
