What exactly are you implying people should do? Lobby? Write letters? Editorials?
Voicing one's opinion is in fact an important part of a democracy, even in such a secluded place as this.
I'm all for voicing opinions I'm just saying that, as we can all tell, it doesn't do anything. I'm all for healthy debating and discussion as I have said before that it helps us to learn and define what we think. But sitting around and doing that forever doesn't get things done. It doesn't help to ensure accountability with our government, it doesn't help to retract laws that have been passed or judge rulings that should be overturned. People disagree and talk about it and nothing gets done.
BTW democracy isn't something that runs on idea's, it isn't a tangible thing. It needs people to give it life, protect it and uphold what it stands for. And if we were doing it right we would still have one but the fact is we drop the ball all the time because as I have said we expect it to take care of itself. And naturally, because it doesn't and the gov knows this, they take control of it and thusly of us. I'm sorry if you don't like this but IMO it's just the truth.
I don't know EXACTLY what we should be doing, and all you're above suggestions are great but writing letters also don't work. Why don't people get active? Why don't we get off our aces and make a stand, the old fashioned way and take it to the streets? I'm NOT talking about rioting or anything violent in anyway that's the WRONG way to make a stand but rather a calm stand. Is it because we are too comfortable and complacent? Maybe everybody should take it to the parliament grounds and not leave until they right the wrong that people were standing for - in this case, to not prorogue parliament. It would certainly send a message. What would they do? It's not like they could just ignore us.
It's a thought. What do you think?
