I got my seasonal flu shot today, the Swine shot in about 3 more weeks. I think what a lot of people are overlooking is the fact that those of us born before 57 won't get a severe dose of the Swine if indeed we get it at all. I am a little concerned about my grand kids, the 8 year old spent a night in the hospital last Xmas with pneumonia, but I would imagine they will all be getting it at school.
I don't think the kids get the shot at school. Your grandson will be eligible about the same time as you and me. As far as I know, most places are doing the same thing - they have clinics set up (and often at schools but parents must be with the child) and they have it set up so that people with chronic illnesses go first along with pregnant women, this week has been children 5 years and under and anyone from the first group who hasn't had theirs. They told us to come next week but we'll see if there is any vaccine around.
I keep hearing that anyone born before 57 may have some immunity. I do recall being as sick as a dog when I was really really young. I must have been awfully sick since I still remember it. We had wood heaters in every room of the house during the winter and I recall laying on a blanket on the floor in front of the wood stove where it was really hot.
I worry too about all my grandkids but most of all I worry about our oldest. I thought he would rank high on the list but he doesn't seem to. That is another worry - that the kids will bring it to us. As I have said repeatedly, they come here twice a week after school or all day depending on whether or not school is in.
I made up a spare room in our house tonight just in case one of us gets sick. I think it's better to be as alone as one can be or at least not sleeping with your spouse if you do get the flu.
I guess I better inquire again about regular flu shots. Seems like lots of people have had them and yet our clinic said the government would not let them give them. Maybe things have changed.

Well, I just found out that I will be going to my first H1N1 funeral. A friend's son past away last night. I really hope that those that have been proud of jumping to the front of the line are happy.
Sorry, Cannuck. My sympathies to your friends' family.

That is really tragic, Cannuck. So sorry to hear, and sincerest condolences to you and your friend's family.

Perhaps I was only able to get the seasonal shot as I'm over 65, I'm not clear about that. If I was you and if you don't have any serious health issues as I don't, then I wouldn't spend another minute worrying about the Swine flu for myself, in all likelihood if you do get it you will be mildly sick for two or three days- there's the odd case like the one of the ex football player who was on the news last night, but you can't go through life worrying about aberrations like that or we'll be in tbe loony bin.

There is a much greater chance that we will die in a horrific car crash than dying from the flu. Nobody thinks of that when they are tearing off down the road to work or shop.

Anyone who has first hand experience with this bug has my understanding and sympathy. My son and his wife and their two small children have been fighting this this thing for almost two weeks. They all have it and it has been a tough fight. I think(hope) that they are over the top now and hopefully they've seen the worst of it and things will get better from now on.

The doc figures that what I was sick with was probably H1N1. If that's the case, the actual flu part came and went quicker than most for me (4 days). The after effects on my fibromyalgia... those are still lingering, with pain more widespread than I'm used to. Normally one area of my body hurts... a joint here, a joint there, a muscle or some skin sensitivity... not all of it at once. Right now I have the sensation of nails stabbing into my hands and feet, the skin all across my back and hips is painful and tender to the touch, as well as under my arms. The joints in my, ankles, knees, hips, back, shoulders, elbows, and wrists, are all inflamed. Even my jaw is in pain. None of the meds I have handy, no amount of massage or soaking in the tub, is helping. It's been a brutal week.

I thought that Edmonton weather would drive away any self respecting bugs:smile:

Brace for more H1N1 deaths, Canada's top doctor warns

OTTAWA — Canadians should be prepared to hear about more swine flu deaths in the coming weeks as the H1N1 pandemic is showing no signs of slowing down, the country's top doctor warned Thursday.

On the contrary, the spread of the H1N1 virus picked up speed over the past week, Chief Public Health Officer Dr. David Butler-Jones said at a news conference, and its prevalence is nearing levels that were seen at the peak of the first wave in June.

Butler-Jones said there are more regions reporting outbreaks, especially in the western provinces, and the number of hospitalizations and intensive-care unit admissions has tripled since last week.

"We expect to hear of more illness and deaths in the coming weeks as we go further into the second wave. This is something we have to be prepared for as much as it saddens us," said Butler-Jones. "It's why prevention remains our goal, for all Canadians to be immunized when their turn comes and ensure appropriate treatment with antivirals for those who are ill."

This is far from over and people should not think they are safe from this flu.. Remember that ever season the flu has two stages and the second round usually starts in January / February..

Yes I think that many people believe it is almost over and are becoming complacent. We are having very wet but mild weather and it seems that much of the country is. Not good for killing flu bugs.

Maybe we should organize hunting parties. What is the best weapon to take down a flu bug?

DUSTIN "BEAR" RENSCHLER
1996 - 2009
Dustin Garnieth Renschler, beloved son of Marina and Brad, and brother to Shelby, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, November 5, 2009, at the age of 13 years. Dustin was born on March 16, 1996 in Bow Island, to proud parents, Brad and Marina and a little brother to Shelby. Dustin endured a life of medical woes and faced his challenges with sparkling spirit. His personality shone through his eyes and was adored by those around him. “Bear” was quite a prankster and liked to maintain his silence until his sister, Shelby wanted to watch TV. It was then his silence was broken and he would make his presence known by being loud - and then he would laugh! He was an affectionate young man and loved to cuddle. He would pull you near and hold on tight. He liked to tease and would often pinch while paying close attention to your hair to pull. Needless to say, while he loved animals, they showed their patience as he would pull on their ears and such. His roughhousing didn’t end with the family pet, his dad was also on the receiving end when “Bear” would demonstrate his newly learned moves from watching wrestling. Dustin loved life and never complained of adversity, even following surgeries. Like his picture, he remained happy and enjoyed the company of those around him. His memory will be cherished by his parents, Brad and Marina and his sister, Shelby; grandpa Garny Renschler and grandma Lu Robertson; uncle Mike (Amber) Renschler, auntie Tracey (Terry) Gardner, uncle Doug Smith, auntie Wanda Nord (Boyd), auntie Sam Gran, uncle Rob Robertson and auntie Patty Robertson as well as numerous cousins and other relatives. He was predeceased by his grandma, Joan Renschler, grandpa, Jim Robertson, grandpa Oly Pelltier, grandpa Wyman Campbell and ‘Harley Pup’. Family and friends are welcome to pay their respects and visit with the family at Marina’s home, 317 - 4th Street West, at liesure from Sunday, November 8, 2009 to Tuesday morning, November 10, 2009. A Celebration of Dustin’s life, filled with music, will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 139 - 2nd Ave. West, Bow Island on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. with Sheila McLeod officiating. Interment will follow at the Burdett Cemetery. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Dustin’s name may be made directly to the Southridge Drive Group Home, 64 Southridge Drive, S.W., Medicine Hat, Alberta T1B 2N6.
