Well, you should probably not take SJP's opinion as gospel.

You have to understand that there is really very little difference between the Republicans and the Democrats.........that's why Obama, a liberal Democrat, keeps on Robert Gates in the Defence portfolio, despite the fact Gates was Bush's appointee.....

And don't be too caught up in SJP's chatacterizations......you need to look at the history of both parties, and the great Presidents that came from both parties......

Thomas Jefferson was a Democrat :)

Abraham Lincoln founded the Republican Party.

Theodore Roosevelt was a Republican.......

Franklin D. Roosevelt founder of the New Deal, was a Democrat.

Nukes were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by Truman....a Democrat.

The Vietnam war was escalated by Lyndon B. Johnson, a Democrat.

Johnson also pushed through real Civil Rights legislation that changed the world of the African-American.........against strong opposition from the South, almost entirely Democrats.

The first President to visit Red China (a mistake, IMHO) was R. M. Nixon, a Republican.

The President that won the Cold war was Ronald Reagan.....a Republican.

And so on.......

Response to #22.

Good try, Colpy, but you should know by now that on these threads, on this forum you will be overwhelmed by liberals.

Giving ALL the credit to Democrats.
Giving NONE to Republicans.

With respect to YukonJack ....

Great post Colpy.... people are victims of the media hysteria - it isn't always as is portrayed in electronic and print ink wonder.

Most level headed people find much to admire in many issues facing the nation upon which they agree regardless of their party preference.

People might be surprised at how much crossing over is actually accomplished especially in local and state issues - it isn't always as portrayed by the Washington pretenders to the "throne".

There are far more across the ideological divide agreements than ever make it into the news - I mean only a burning house creates interest right? The houses which age gracefully without disaster for decades attract none.

Quite so, curiosity. If somebody says ‘I agree with you’, that is hardly news, that is not going to sell any newspapers. But if somebody says ‘I disagree with you, you are a $%&*#’, that is news, that sells newspapers and reporters pounce on that.

That is why the debate is always monopolized by extremists of both sides. Good news does not sell, bad news does. People don’t want to read about good news, about agreements. They want to read about bad news, about disagreements. J.R.R.Tolkien put it in a very succinct manner in ‘The Hobbit’, I will see if I can dig up the exact quote.

Yes, here it is (from ‘The Hobbit’).

Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling anyway.

It is the same with news. Good news is boring, uninteresting. Disagreements, bad news, fights are interesting and worth reading about.

And @Republican Party, what about Michael S Steel ?? An African American in the republican party is a bit controversial isnt it???

Well yes, he is controversial, he has to walk a tight rope. He does not come across as an extremist, he is a moderate (for a Republican), but he has to cater to the far right base.

A while ago he dared criticize the de facto leader of the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh. He was pounced upon by the Republican base and he had to apologize to Limbaugh for daring to disagree with him.

So Michael Steele has to walk a tight rope, he has to be careful of what he says, for fear that he may offend the Republican Party base.

So.... Finally Potty admits he is an extremist and his reality comes from fiction....

I suppose you would say with a straight face that you don't give all credit to the Republicans and none to the Democrats? Yes, he's been around here to know the extremists come from both sides.

Dems & Reps, Cons & Libs = partisan kooks who think they each are the panacea to the world's woes but are really some of the causes of them.

ok sry for pushing the thread up again, but i´d have some more questions if its ok

I really did get the whole general sense of why they exist and what functions they have but whom should i know?

I mean, obviously Barack Obama , Joe Biden as Vice president but is Hillary Clinton still playing an important part in the democratic politics? And what about Nancy Pelosi , i heard of her being a very powerful woman with an important role but what exactly does she do as a speaker ? ( i hope the questions are not too dumb but maybe you can give me easy explanations for someone who doesnt know very much about politics : / google doesnt )

Thanks a lot!

*LIBERAL Democratic, PROGRESSIVE VERSION:*

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his
house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the
ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and
demands to know why the ant should be warm and well fed while others are
cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering
grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a
table filled with food.
America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper
is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper, and everybody
cries when they sing, "It's Not Easy Being Green."

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton stage a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, "We shall over come." Jesse and Al then have the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.

Nancy Pelosi & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Katie Couric that
the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call
for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act
retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing
to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to
pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

Hillary Clinton gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a
defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of
federal judges that Bill Clinton appointed from a list of single-parent
welfare recipients.

The ant loses the case.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of
the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens
to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't
maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow. The grasshopper is found dead in a
drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a
gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be careful how you vote!
They have no incentive to do anything themselves, just blame everyone else for all the woes of the world.

ironsides: are you saying grasshoppers are communist? Or capitalist? Because the ant sounds like the majority of Liberal minded people, you know Hard working, providing for their family.
The grasshopper OTH is looking for a freebee which describes both extremes of the political spectrum.
