Hi. I don't really know if I want to hang here. I read a few posts by various people and although most seem to be nice people, there are a few who seem to have no self-respect let alone respect for anyone else. I make a habit of avoiding those sorts of people's spaces. I couldn't really help myself when I ranted a bit in that other thread, but that stream fellow riled me. How he can use language like he did against sweet and good people like my daughter and others and still call himself faithful to Christianity is unfathomable. If he finds people like my daughter offensive, he has misfiring synaptical activity. No worries on my part Anna. I used it as an example of a double standard, not to point a finger at Les.
Hey, when are you going to get your own user id?

Really! I don't know most of the Hollywood celebrities. I have an issue with respect for the dead and dying. It doesn't have to be from cancer. Comment on anything that suits you. I just hope that you can do it with respect in regard to someone who has just died. Is it that hard to show respect? No wonder the world is upside down and backwards.
I'm sure the movie magicians in HollyWeird have no shortage of pretty assistants to saw in half or gangsta rapper to immortalize and cash in on after they have a crack induced psychotic episode and shoot themselves or someone else. Now I'm going to hide in the basement, wearing black, mourning the death of a random average citizen. That should balance out the universe, after the sainthood bestowed upon celebrities this week.
lolll Unf - I haven't been around a whole lot lately, and to be honest I think I was the last one on the planet to hear about MJ's death. I won't go into my personal thoughts on the man, it's irrelevent here.
If I left the impression that I'm personally offended by anything I've read here, let me correct that immediately. I'm not impressed by celebrity but I do think that the issue of respect should be held to a firmer standard under certain circumstances - regardless of whose death it is.
If anything, you could accuse me of finding it difficult to keep up with what I perceive to be devolving standards of decency. But I promise not let it ruin my summer.![]()
Still I feel there is a lot of space between respect irl and some minimum standard that should be adhered to on the Internet.
It's not a race...
...and I do agree that there are times that it's the lowest common denominator that is celebrated. Let me temper that with the practice of walking the perimeter to see the limits of ourselves and the possibilities of extending that, also having supplied the best of us as a species. A double edge sword. I think it's impossible to trim one end without affecting the other.
Savvy?
I don't think the standard online should be any different than irl.
Savvy. Not sure I agree though - whether it's the lowest denominator or the highest aspiration we're headed towards, both directions first require a choice. I'd rather see us perpetually choosing to stretch the perimeter of our limitations rather than careening back and forth from there to the abyss of lost human decency.
Is it just me or have the standards of decency on this forum fallen down from where they once were. Do we accept bad language because it is in a signature? I'm not a prude by any stretch but bad language has it's place but needs to be rare if it is to have any meaning. Gerryh's potty mouth didn't start with the death of MJ. Foul language was normal for gerryh. I for one, would like to see the standards raised a little.
well juan, gerry's not new. So have standards dropped? No, I don't really think so.
If someone wants to push for an improvement on what they see as an increase in foul language, there are a variety of ways to do it. But singling out one poster? And getting him banned over a thread where he was trying to make a point rather than just being senselessly foul? THAT seems like a lowering of our forum standards to me.
I find it hilarious when people talk about standards and decency where Gerry is concerned, then turn a blind eye to others. They aren't fooling anybody. They don't like Gerry and are using the language as an excuse.
As far as forums versus real life, there is nothing I have said on here that I would not say to an individual that was standing in front of me. I get the feeling Gerry is much the same way. The same can not be said of his detractors.
