Anyway, reviewing the comments in this thread, many posters seem to think that the athletes did nothing wrong (even though the athletes think otherwise, apparently they apologized for their behavior).

This is the typical reaction whenever an athlete screws up. I remember there were plenty of supporters, plenty of apologists for Mike Tyson.

This is simply wrong, celebrities should not be held to lower standard than average person. If anything, they must be held to a higher standard. They make their living out of adoration, adulation of the general public, general public regards them as role models. It is incumbent upon them not to be bad role models, they must live exemplary lives, at least in public. What they do behind closed doors is their business (as long as they don’t break the law).

Anyway, evidently they apologized, I think that should close the matter. Hopefully they have learned their lesson.

Any other country would have been happier than a pig in doodoo.(look at Finland and their bronze) The yanks are just too arrogant.
True dat-the Finns were ecstatic blowing kisses on screen to people everywhere.

I saw the first game Finland played against the Russians, who were also quite full of themselves/arrogant, the Finns played a classic positional game and beat the Russians into the ice.

One drink of booze a day can be harmful, especially in older people. It's very important that all the calories we take in are nutritious calories, so if you are drinking one of two things is happening, either you are gaining weight or you are under nourished, unless of course you make a point of getting enough exercise to accommodate the extra calory consumption. As for smoking what do the statistics say about a person who smokes 3 cigarettes a day? I'll bet you they are virtually the same as the person who smokes zero. Probably much less harmful than the air you breathe in an industrial area.

There are many doctors who think that one drink a day (red wine or something similar) is good for you. Drinking in moderation is definitely not harmful, except to certain people (who have medical problems etc.).

As to 3 cigarettes a day, I don't have the statistics. However, I do remember reading that the damage to lungs begins with the first puff of the first cigarettes.

There is no safe dose of tobacco. If you smoke a small number of cigarettes, you will have some damage to lungs, if you smoke many, there will be severe damage.

Just exactly how does this incident compare to what Mike Tyson did?

LOL, you are the one that said they would go out and buy cigarettes, I was just pointing out that selling smokes to minors is illegal. Anyway you are obviously thick skulled, so there is no point in continuing this discussion.

If from that you conclude that teenagers don’t buy cigarettes, that teenagers don’t smoke, all I can say is that you are extremely naïve.

So do you think that the incidence of smoking in teenagers is zero? You must, if you think that because selling cigarettes to minors is illegal, that means minors cannot purchase cigarettes.

yea i agree and understand i been insulted and i insulted people before, so i am not taking it personally cause of the fact they know they can't win ;)

From where I sit I notice some posters get bashed/insulted more than others and while I'm not a psychologist or mind reader, I think I have some insight. I think admitting it when you are wrong makes a big difference- after all who isn't wrong sometimes?

The organisation apologised to the media early AM eastern time-the players who were in Pacific time were almost certainly sleeping off hangovers and couldn't be bothered about some tempest in a beer bottle.

If the organization apologized, you can be sure that they will rap the knuckles of the athletes, and an apology by the athletes will follow in due time.

Don't be idiotic. You were the one who said they 'would go out and buy cigarettes'. I never said they wouldn't smoke. Case closed.

There is no excuse for personal insults, JLM. It is only the weak minds, the ones with low self esteem, who try to boost their ego by insulting others (it doesn't work, of course).

Yeah, they should step up to the plate and address the concerns of those who have spoken out against their little celebration.

I think "Kiss My Arse, Dickheads" would be appropriate.

Being illegal doesn't necessarily prevent them from buying cigarettes, Risus. There was no excuse for the behavior of the athletes.

Yes there is an excuse: THEY WON THE TOURNAMENT....

If you want to blame anyone, blame the media for blowing it out of proportion.

Yeah, a lot of fans started biting ears off people.

I see. So does that justify Mike Tyson's behavior in your eyes? Because nobody imitated him? I really don't see why many people have a blind spot when it comes to athletes, they will excuse almost any behavior because the athletes can kick a ball or hit the hockey puck better than anyone else.

There was no excuse for what Tyson did, but based on your logic, fans would be biting ears off each other.
