Cops leave note after shooting dead family dog

A US woman is distraught after she arrived home to find a note from police on her front door saying they had killed her dog.
Oakland police in California's Bay Area responded to a false robbery alarm at an Oakland Hills home and were confronted by Gloria, and 11-year-old arthritic yellow Labrador, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
"While circling the rear perimeter, lab [Gloria] advanced on officers in a threatening manner before being shot and killed," the note read.

Police said the dog growled and barked at them before it was shot three times with a Glock .40 calibre pistol in the backyard.
Gloria's owner, Mary Kate Hallock, was running errands and arrived home to find a note on the front door.
"I probably read the note 10 times — I was just incredulous," Ms Hallock, a preschool teacher, told the Chronicle.
"Gloria's never bit anyone — she's just a gentle dog, a classic lab, always wagging her tail."
Oakland police have defended the shooting but apologised to the Hallock family, who had owned Gloria since she was a puppy.
Gloria's body was taken to the city's animal shelter before being retrieved and cremated by the Hallock family.

Yep, don't know which is worse that incident or the one where a guy was murdered for threatening the cops with a stapler.

We don't get mad when they kill people, we get mad when they kill pets.

Shooting an 11yr old Retriever for barking at someone in its own yard is akin
to shooting a 75yr old person for telling someone to get off their lawn, and I'd
find either situation equally reprehensible. All in response to a false alarm
from a home alarm system? Ugh....the guilt this woman must feel.

I'm really sick of the way cops react to behavior they 'decide' is worth killing over. whether it's people
or pets, it doesn't matter.

Labs make a big racket when strangers come to the gate, that is good. Many police officers are not
different than criminals, they are aggressive and physically far too rough, when some sort of brain
activity between their ears should tell them how to handle the situation. The police authorities should
be much more picky when allowing new officers to take control, it is scary and only gives certain humans
legal use of force over others, either people or animals.

Our chocolate lab is so sweet and gentle and has never moved on anyone in an agressive way, BUT, just leave
him alone fenced in, in his yard, and no one will open the gate as he barks loudly and with a baritone
sound that demands respect, and guards that gate, it is 'his' gate, he would not even let our neighbour
come in to cut our grass when we were away, but if a policeman every shot and killed him for doing what
he is suppose to do, it would be a dirty rotton shame, and poor dicision making by police.

If a little child, or anyone entered the yard, he would never bite them, but would continue barking,
unless of course they had 'treats' in their pocket for him, as his stomach rules his life, the mail
delivery lady, just walks in, if she has to get to the door, chats with him while he is barking loudly,
and gives him a biscuit, she is brave, I sure wouldn't do it, if I was delivering mail.

Just a picky correction, goldens are retrievers, yellows are labs, there is no such thing as a golden lab.
sorry, but I had to say it.

I tried to go in and edit my last post, there is no edit place, so I couldn't fix obvious mistakes.
What happened to edit markers.

Many people get dogs as a deterrent to criminals, the dogs are there to protect or at least give the illusion of protecting their family and property. I could understand them shooting this dog if it had attacked but just for barking and growling... makes you wonder just what kind of training the police are getting these days.

From the picture, that's a yellow lab, not a Golden Retriever.:grommit:

We had a black lab which would have defended his property with more than barking.

But, really, the dog was barking at the cops. They were investigating a break in? If there was a break in wouldn't the dog be in the process of defending his house, not confronting the cops.

Moot point, but some mega violence by the boys in blue.

Once again proving that some of them are arseholes.

A golden lab is a cross breed, golden retriever X Labrador retriever. Cross breeds can still be named, just like bugs, labradoodles, and cockapoos.

Don't think so. Golden retriever is a purebred. So is a yellow, black, chocolate, white, lab. A golden lab is a misnomer.

Unless you want to cross breed GR & L , would then = whatever you want to call it. But it would be a crossbreed, not a purebred known as a golden lab. Ain't no such animal.

labradoodles and cocapoos are just shyte breeds, cobbled together to make their owners money, as would be a "golden lab".

Anyhow, I think the cops should have tasered it to death, then, unless there were witnesses, no one could have proved a thing. As in the airport murder of the Polish chap. If it hadn't been caught on tape by a citizen, the cops would have got off scott free. That's also a moot point, as none of them have, as yet, gone to jail.

How many I.Q. tests does a candidate have to fail to graduate from police college??

FYI... the be all, end all source of knowledge :)Labrador Retriever - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaYellow (and related shades)In the early years of the breed through to the mid-20th century, Labradors of a shade we would now call "yellow" were in fact a dark, almost butterscotch, colour (visible in early yellow Labrador photographs). The shade was known as "Golden" until required to be changed by the UK Kennel Club, on the grounds that "Gold" was not actually a colour. Over the 20th century a preference for far lighter shades of yellow through to cream prevailed, until today most yellow labs are of this shade.[12]

yup, that makes sense, a golden lab would be exactly that - a cross between a yellow lab and a golden retriever.
yeah, and it's amazing, all these so-called breeders are asking as high a price for their mixed breed
dogs, with the new names, but none are registerable, they are not pure bred dogs, and people are
willing to pay those high prices for puppies they cannot register, they are a novelty and a new fad.

yepper, my thoughts as well. They're advertised as "fearless", and a 'home defender'. Which is true.

What is also true is that they will rip you a brand new anus at a moments notice, without provocation.

Hope i'm not coming across as a know it all, but I used to volunteer at a humane society, raised and trained Labs for a few years, and .................Jeesus!!! - the stuff they take in and recycle to new homes is frightening. Giving them cutsey names, and tying a pretty bandanna round their necks.

Bad Brad Pittbull becomes, Mr. Charms., new name, new home, new victims.

Illegal in Ontario, but one still sees lots of them on leashes - or off.
