It really happened: Six generations of inbreeding spanning the years 1800 to 1960 caused an isolated population of humans living in the hills of Kentucky to become blue-skinned.

The startlingly blue people, all descendants of a French immigrant named Martin Fugate and still living near his original settlement on the banks of Troublesome Creek when hematologists studied them in the 1960s, turned out to have a rare blood condition called methemoglobinemia. A recessive gene was pairing with itself to change the molecular composition of their blood, making it brown as opposed to red, which tinted their skin blue.

I would imagine that by the time we would all be so interbred as to look Brazilian, we would also have the ability to pick and choose our genetic manifestations. I know, very sci-fi of me but I really suspect that will be where 'cosmetology' goes in the future.

According to Stephen Stearns, a Yale professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, before the invention of the bicycle, the average distance between the birthplaces of spouses in England was 1 mile (1.6 kilometers). During the latter half of the 19th century, bikes upped the distance men went courting to 30 miles (48 km), on average. Scholars have identified similar patterns in other European countries. Widespread use of bicycles stimulated the grading and paving of roads, lending credence to the Fugate clan's excuse and making way for the introduction of automobiles. Love's horizons have kept expanding ever since.

Hey Mr. University wiz.... You do realize that people rode horses before the bike was invented and that horses could actually travel further than most humans on an archaic bicycle on a dirt/grass road, right?

One mile on average?

Geez and people think humans today are lazy. Even without a horse, mule or bike, you'd think they could muster more than a mile in walking distance, even with crappy roads.

Back in my day, we had to walk on our hands to school, through 15 feet of snow, while wearing mittins with strings running up our sleeves.

No kidding Praxius.... My grandpa had to travel on horseback for almost a full day to court my grandma. There wasn't enough time for a round trip, so he had to stay in the bunkhouse with the brothers. it was a three day trip every time he went to see her. Good luck biking that. lol.

Blondes 'to die out in 200 years'

Scientists believe the last blondes will be in Finland

The last natural blondes will die out within 200 years, scientists believe.

A study by experts in Germany suggests people with blonde hair are an endangered species and will become extinct by 2202. Researchers predict the last truly natural blonde will be born in Finland - the country with the highest proportion of blondes.

A population forged from the long-term mixing of Africans, Native Americans and Europeans serves as an archetype for the future of humanity, Stearns said: A few centuries from now, we're all going to look like Brazilians.
A few centuries from now all my molecules will have been dispersed throughout the planet. I doubt I'll look anything like a human, let alone a Brazilian. :D

hehehe
How far can I ride in a day?
This varies depending on your overall fitness, your personal goals, the style of touring you choose, and the terrain. Here are some tips to plan by. With a bit of bicycle-specific training, an average physically fit adult carrying less than 20 pounds of additional gear on their bike can expect to travel at an average pace of 65 miles per day on paved roads and still have time to stop and smell plenty of roses. With a load of gear totaling 20-45 pounds, the average pace to plan for should be lowered to 55 miles per day. If the terrain is particularly flat or mountainous, the average will increase or decrease accordingly (for mountain-bike travel, these distances can be cut in half, or more, depending on the ruggedness of the terrain).

Experienced bicycle travelers can ride further, but for most people, planning to exceed these averages has a tendency to increase the physical challenge and decrease the enjoyment. We recommend that you plan for at least one rest day out of ten, and carry no more than 45 pounds of gear, and a lot less if you can. Always plan time in your day, and days off in your trip, for unexpected challenges and good opportunities.

Daily Distance

  • Horses can usually travel 20 to 30 miles in a day. A horse carrying heavy gear or that is out of shape may cover less than 20 miles in a day.

Makes sense. Most of the people on the planet have black hair.

Redheads too... if we allow random selection. The genes will remain in the population, yet rarely expressed. Eventually we will homogenize.

Yet as Karrie pointed out, "...we would also have the ability to pick and choose our genetic manifestations".

We've already started down the choosing genes path with sex selection. Preimplantation embryo screening can detect a wide variety of inherited genetic diseases.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preimplantation_genetic_diagnosis

Hair and eye color can't be far away. The screening can even occur before fertilization/conception. People with money will have designer or replica babies... How would you like Lady Di for a daughter? Now that's science fiction... ;)

lol. Les, that's modern bikes on paved roads, with a conditioned rider.
lol True enuff.
As a kid of about 10 years old I biked (single speed bike) from the east side of Penticton to the top of Summerland hill in almost 3 hours one day. I wasn't in any rush and I walked partways up the hill. The distance is about 12 or 13 miles.
Average walking speed of a horse is about 4MPH.
So as a 10 yr old kid, I could match a horse.

This kind of gibberish is like saying the population of Canada will be zero in two centuries unless we have massive immigration. So much silly guilt.

Does all this hype mean that we need not worry about the survival of the "Spirit Bear"? I mean, after all they are white, thereby of little use or consequence in the long term. We did however, set aside a supposed sanctuary for them, just as we did with the Red men.

bahahaha!!! I love how you made this sound almost like humanity was giving preference to dark features, rather than our base genetic code was. lol. Oh my god, my genes are so RACIST.

Your genes are racist, given that they tend to work on the side of survival of the fittest. Humanity often tends to attempt to circumvent that by prejudice. Survival of the fittest is not always the best for the long term outcome of modern humanity.
In the greater part of the human population intellectual ability comes second to greater force. As witness the number of repressive states and population numbers compared to open or democratic states/cultures.

Hilarious...

Racism will still exist. In the future anyone with an Aryan ancestor will be able buy a white skinned blue eyed blond haired, high IQ, genetic disease free progeny based on their own genes. For a price, fertility clinics will cut out the unwanted genes and splice in a few master race race genes... or if you prefer you buy a clone embryo of someone you admire... like buying a car.

You totally missed my point that racism transcends color and instead inserted "Aryan" in order to attach a label of evil to all with light skin. Too bad it must be spelled out to insatiably PC types.
