Why are many Christians so intolerant of other religions and spiritual paths?

Well I do see a ton of intolerance from Non Christians. Why do Christians have to prove they are tolerant yet others are exempted.
Everyone needs to learn tolerance if not for others with different belief systems then for themselves. Intolerance, narrow thinking, feeling responsible to change the way others live, think, believe and feel results in stress and anger which is a brutal way to live.

I think one of the reasons Christians take a big hit is because of Christ's teachings. He is very clear that everything and I do mean everything comes back to love. Love of self, love of others. Even the gifts of the spirit, the greatest is love. Christians have a big name to live up to, a big example to follow.

Christians have to prove they are tolerant because Christ led the way.

Once we all learn to tolerate one another like we do bloated stomachs, the world will be a much better place. Then we can start working beyond tolerance.

Religion breeds intolerance of other religions and the non religious. The non religious reciprocate. It is an endless cycle that needs to be broken. Even devout atheists need to learn tolerance and acceptance. The alternative is dysfunction and/or war.
I'm all kinds of tolerant. Believe whatever nonsense makes you feel all warm and happy. Just keep it off my land, out of my face, and out of the civil laws.

I hate Catholics. Their religion isn't much better than Islam, so it ranks very low in the list of religions which deserve tolerance and respect.

Tsk, tsk! Tolerance, man! Listen to Cliff. Aviod TB like the plague,

Look at British coinage. Does it not have F(ideii) D(efensor) stamped on it for all to see? Was this title (Defender of the Faith) not conferred upon Henry (VIII, not to be confused with my neighbour) by Pope Leo X? Henry's subsequent break with Catholicism was not theological but penile.

I'm all kinds of tolerant. Believe whatever nonsense makes you feel all warm and happy. Just keep it off my land, out of my face, and out of the civil laws.

Jeepers, man, you're not talking about the Land of the Free and the Home of the Strange?

been thinking about this due to your other post:

I hate the word tolerance. I tolerate insomnia. I tolerate upset stomach and headaches. I tolerate freezing winter weather. Whatever happened to love.

I don't remembet Christ ever saying, 'Tolerate the Lord your God with all your heart and all your mind and all your soul, and tolerate thy meighbour as tehyself.'
thanks for the contemplation.... at first I agreed.

But I have to say Machjo, there are many, many things that others do that I am simply never going to love. I may learn to tolerate them and that will be excellent and as far as it needs to go. I don't love all of the people in my building. I do tolerate them and show them respect when I encounter them. That comes from a place of love, love of self, love of others. I am never going to actually love who they are, or the way they present. I don't see that as a problem. I don't believe Christ would either. There are degrees to everything.

I am still behaving in a loving manner. Tolerance is a form of love.

Good thing the Patriarch Of Constantinople doesn't think like you.....

And your so full of hate you don't even realise that all the Christian denominations have been getting together since 1962.... Second Vatican Council (Roman Catholic history [1962-65]) -- Encyclopedia Britannica

Only the different factions of islam still fight with each other.......So you see you have more in common with islam than Christianity....

I appreciate deeply your acknowledgement of not only the veracity of my statement but the care with which I framed it.

Originally, I was going to drone on about apostolic succession, and why The Catholic Church views the Orthodox and conservative Anglicans as members of Church, but dismisses the fundamentalists' claim in that regard. In fact, male Anglican priests. married or single, can slip over to Catholicism without fuss, muss, or trial by ordeal to minister to Catholic flocks. And, note, the sacraments of the Orthodox are fully recognised.

Motar and cj44, repent!

Brother Goobs, the secular mind acknowledges its humanity. Repetition of this maxim will gain you a partial indulgence of one week.

I see we have another thing in common. Never meeting an intolerant, ignorant ill educated atheist.
I heard they had one, stuffed, same as in Planet of the Apes, at the Museum of Man.

I don't think the ignorance and intolerance are the realm of any one group but are spread equally among all groups of humans. Religion, politics or even bowling teams have their share on both ends of the spectrum. Does anybody feel the call for a rousing rendition of Kumbya?

I have worked with numerous Muslims for the past 14 years, had many a discussion on religion. They profess tolerance and respect for all, regardless of Religion.
Just happens there are more of us Christians around is all.

It's not the Muslims, or Jews, or any other religious group that has a problem with Merry Christmas. It's the fricking atheists that have the problem.

I have never had issues either. Though I have been called a racist by a couple of drivers. Had the main guy in from Toronto over that one, a Canadian Multinational, responsible for all drivers from Ont to BC.
I was the one that initiated the push up thru the company.

I was cleared
Rather easily at that. The man was quite embarrassed after receiving & reviewing all the facts. But he had to address it. Which he did.
Oh yes, the driver was present as well.

You are right. Domestic Islamophobia is not only misplaced but self defeating.
