Nice. :)
Creston (about 6000 people) has no jams, not much 'tude, etc. Even less in Kaslo (about 1100 population). Nelson (area pop. about 9,000) has 'tude and jams. Castlegar (about 7100) has both. Trail isn't too bad (pop. about 8000).

And if you want to get away from all the big city problems of the West Kootenay metropolises just head 60 miles west to quaint and serene Grand Forks pop 4000, but bring your job with you..............:lol::lol:

Never spent much time in GF. I do like Rock Creek, though. And up 3 towards Kloneville is cool. Or up Christian Valley is even cooler. I like it over by Watshan Lake too.
Can't handle Crannybrook. But up towards Windemere and the Columbia Valley is nice.

Trail is like a moonscape jammed into a crevice! Nelsonites have been walking around with broom stick up their butts since some book named it the number one arts community in Canada. Castlegar stinks of pulp mill effluent. Kaslo is cool. Most people think of poligamy when they think of Creston. Alberians have bought up half of New Denver but are absentee owners, which is really hurting local businesses.

You forgot Nakusp. Pop: 1500, friendly, no traffic jams, mountains, lakes and some of the finest scenery anywhere. But don't come here. We like our privacy. Just kidding. We get thousands of motorcycles coming through here every year because of the roads, Music Fest and hot springs.

Sorry Kreskin but the Blue Ribbon goes to Nanaimo. Take a look at the entry into CR - not very attractive. It's rare to find anyone who has many good things to say about CR. We do have friends that love it there and my youngest was married there (because his wife lived there for awhile and because her Mom cont'd to live there until she passed away). Courtenay/Comox is a lovely little city to look at, however, it is one of the most un-friendly places I've lived. We[ve lived in both Comox and Courtenay. Ucluelet is a homely little fishing village but it's probably one of the most friendly places anyone can live (or at least it used to be). If I had to choose between Pt. Alberni and C.R. - I would choose C.R. I have never liked Alberni.
It was good of Juan to supply the link for the new Nanaimo Community Centre as I have not seen it yet. Looks lovely.

I've lived in Nanaimo, Brentwood Bay, Courtenay and Campbell River. All have good and bad. Nanaimo has the ugliest looking downtown core on the Island. I loved Courtenay. Brentwood was ok but was afraid to wake up everyone. Campbell River has changed a lot. The entry into Campbell River is brand new and looks great. Have an ocean view home that would be out of my price range down island. It has been good to me.

C-gar doesn't stink near a much these days and Trail actually is growing green stuff around it.lol
Kaslo is cool. Creston is a ways from Bountiful, though. Nelson drivers are a pile of idiots.I like Denver and Silverton. Nakusp is niceUsed to go to St. Lyons HS (or was it Halcyon) when there wasn't any developments. I like Burton, too.

Halcyon was just off the highway and St Lyon is 6 klicks up a logging road. In the eighties Halcyon was my bath tub. Went there every other day. Spectacular view on the mountains across the lake.
Burton is a blink and miss place but once you get off the highway, it is a very nice little rural community. Silverton is suffering the same as New Denver but they are beautiful towns.

BTW, I went to the dig at Lemon Creek today. Very interesting. The crew are archaeologists and anthropologists working together. Their carbon dating shows it to be one of the oldest sites in the interior plateau. Over 90 pithouse sites in the area, some were huge (40 plus feet in diameter).

I wish I had an ocean view home but that kind of money is beyond us. Downtown Nanaimo is changing. Not all of it has been prettied up but as Juan showed you, it has a good start. It's a long ways from where I live and I rarely go near there.

We saw a fair amount of lightning and we also had the fireworks after the bathtub race.
From what I was told at the store today it sounds like nearly the whole city saw it except for us. Hubby was working graveyard shift and with the hot weather I have all my drapes closed so I really didn't notice it at all. Wish I had.

That is a hillarious statement, how can anyone say anywhere is unfriendly, as
every town has all kinds of different people, you'd think they were assembled
on the unfriendly assembly line, and rolled out into the town 'all the same'.
I've lived in courtenay/comox for over 20 years, have never thought of it as
unfriendly, and you are the first person I've heard say such a thing.
One can't say that about any town/city. That's not fair to the people living
there, or anywhere. Maybe you just didn't like your neighbours.

Ucluelet is a homely little fishing village but it's probably one of the most friendly places anyone can live (or at least it used to be).
my daughter/son-in-law live and work in Ucluelet, they have rental cottages,
a very unique little town, but can't say it's friendlier or unfriendlier than any
other place I've been, and I've travelled the streets of Ucluelet many many
times. Very expensive though, a little rip off town that charges too much
for everything, same as Tofino. Don't find it homely either, just a typical
coastal village, fishing, and also lots of money there, just take a look at
the huge houses along the ocean edge, some owned by cellebrities.

City of Nanaimo is ugly, never have liked it, I just go to outskirts, woodgrove
and area, and the Crow and Gate, (thanks juan for letting me in on that sweet secret, )and I love Quallicum, do lots of lunches and walking there, great
little 'small store' town, but also too expensive, they price everything for
the tourists and the high end retirees in the area.
I lived in Parksville for 3 years, enjoyed it there, nice people, and close to
the ocean, we were on that beach so much.
I like the courtenay/comox valley much better as there is so much more to do,
never get bored in the valley, and it's a great walking area, both courtenay
and comox.
We have several different places to have lunch (outside) by the water.
And I like Campbell River too, have spent lots of time there, nice restaurants,
good shopping, down to earth prices, and it's pretty there, as you can see
the ocean from almost everywhere, and a great marina behind the mall to
stroll and look at all the boats.

I'm still living in my home. :D
I guess it was Halcyon HS we used to go to. It was only a couple hundred feet above the hway. Heard it was all developed so we quit going there. Was kind of neat to sit in the crude, railway-tie, sand-bottomed tub with the snows of winter all around. Or lie in the little creek beside it.

I lived in 3 different houses in Comox/Courtenay. It is not a friendly area. The only people we found friendly were the ones my husband worked with and they lived the same life we did. I haven't lived in that area since 1990 or 91 and I have not lived in Ucluelet since 1995. I've only been back to Ucluelet 3 times since we moved from there. It has changed a lot. Even the residents say the same. Nothing is like it used to be. Courtenay is probably one of the prettiest towns to enter on the Island but regardless of how you feel, I found it extremely un-friendly. I was happy to leave.
Sorry Kreskin, but CR has never been a place I have found attractive. Particularly the entry from this direction at least. Just seems like there is so much they could do there to make it especially nice. My son did get married there though because his wife is from there and I can say that the people we met at the time were very friendly and helpful.
Downtown Nanimo could use a cleaning up but that is happening. If you don't visit that area then you would not know that. I don't often go there myself since I live in the North end and there is nothing I really need there. To say Nanaimo is ugly is a pretty strong use of words for a fellow islander. It's much more friendly than the other island places I have lived.

When you find people unfriendly, it's 'those' people, not the place you live, I have
lived in courntenay/comox for over 25 years, not unfriendly at all.
And, if I find someone unfriendly, I won't blame it on the area, it will be them.

I can say that the last street we lived on in Courtenay was a friendly one. I think that was because all of us on the street were "new". No one had lived in the area for so long that they felt they didn't need any new friends as it was a whole new subdivision. At that time it was referred to as the area of 200 homes. Just off Ryan Road and Back Road. It turned into much more than 200 homes. My daughter-in-law said just yesterday that house sales in Courtenay have really slowed. Her brother was living there until the past few weeks and is now in the midst of a marriage breakup and they are trying to sell their house so they are into knowing how the market is I guess.

Ha ha, take away the Cruiseships going through Discovery Passage and seen from just about every house, the real seawalk at nearly everyone's door step that's loaded with gorgeous rollerblading chicks, and the huge public fishing Pier and replace it all with BC Ferries..you almost step down to the Nanaimo level. ;)

Okay. That's it. The gloves are off.;-)

Nanaimo, the only major city on Vancouver Island where B.C. Ferries actually land in the city. Victoria is served by a Ferry that lands in Schwartz Bay....Some thirty kilometers away. Here is a short tour of a small part of the waterfront:
