But yet it is ok to go against your employers wishes, your government's wishes, your wife's wishes, your kids wishes, everyone else's wishes but not your union's wishes. hhhmm Whatever happened to freedom of expression?

Hey Anna- these guys don't respond well to reason, ever try to talk slugs out of your garden?:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Last week private banks milked more from the system than all unions have in all of time. But you want to fix the union problem, good luck, because you still will never get a deal from the bankers.

Are you suggesting its ok for unions to bankrupt the companies and country that pays their salaries because bank ceo's do it too?

With that line of logic everything immoral is acceptable in your eyes because someone else did it before?

Are you suggesting that you can supply names of union bankrupted companies?

unions are great for protecting worker rights so the man can't stick it to you but some members become power hungry and go overboard when that happens then the whole union is at risk of failing.

Non union workers have to thank the unions for getting their wages up and getting them better working conditions because all employers have to hold onto their valued workers or they go out of business

"Non union workers have to thank the unions for getting their wages up and getting them better working conditions"- not to mention adding to inflation.

At one time unions DID serve a purpose ie working conditions, etc, but not any longer. We have labour laws to cover that and they are quite effective. There is no longer any need for unions, unless you are one of the union bosses and don't want to lose the big salary you are sucking from union members.

What happens to all those nice Union folks when the last of big industry stops hiring and they run out of pockets to pick?

When big industry quits hiring, I think there's more people in trouble than the Union lads. One way or another the bubble has to burst. There's a limit to the number of parasites an organization can have on its back.

Sure there are labour laws but without unions to enforce them individuals are hard pressed to complain about their employers for the fear of repercussion
Even with an iron clad union contract employers are constantly breaking it on a continual base because they never intended to follow it and the hundreds of grievances filed by members proves it.

The contract is a legal binding document but the employer is constantly challenging the interpretation of the contract therefore tying up lots of money in legal costs on both sides, which I feel is a way of depleting the union funds because corporations have lots of shareholder money to throw around.

The ultimate goal of any employer is to break the union.

The employer is better off with a union worker because they get a better quality employee that is there to do the job right sure they pay more in wages and benefits but they get better quality of products.

In a non union shop the working conditions are bad and the pay is low and the worker just doesn’t care about the quality of the product.

Inflation is a by product of a low unemployment rate where lot’s of people are getting a good wage which means they can pay more for goods and services and from that more employment opportunities spring up.

The only people that complain about inflation are people that are in debt and that just a whole other subject.

I would suggest that every single thing you have said may be true in certain cases, but overall, nothing you've said there is true very often.

What a bunch of garbage. Unions protect the lazy workers. In non union shops the hard working, conscientious workers who have good work ethics get ahead.
You can't go by the number of grievences. Most are not substantiated with fact and are dismissed.
There is no reason to fear repercussion, the laws even cover that. To fire a complaining worker is the last thing a company wants to do.

Some pretty wild generalizations there, Liberalman. I think there are situations as you describe, but there are also situations where a very skilled and honest person goes inito business and hires employees, with the honest intent of dealing with them fairly because he knows happy employees are productive and earn money not for just themselves but for the company too. Many of the problems you speak of are controlled by the market place, Produce a sh*tty product, you either won't be able to sell it or sell it at a much reduced price, so the workers will respond according, accept sh*tty pay or quit and go where they can do better. The consumer is the ultimate control. The Union is just another level of "government" - which we have to decide if we REALLY want to fund.

Hey Risus (we may have different opinion about hockey) but you are dead on here. I've been through it all for almost 30 years. One thing that really put me off about most radical Union people is they have ZERO tolerance for other opinions.

Thanks, JLM.

One of the companies I used to work for was family owned. We had an annual golf tournament , ski day (on week days, all paid for by the company), a recroom with pool table, shuffle board. TV, set of weights etc., had barbecues, and picnics for the worker's children and so on. The company ended up being sold to a company with a union. The union moved into the facility I was at, thought the company was bribing the workers with the events I listed above. Fine, management did away with them all. The workers squawked, management blamed the union (correctly), the workers tried to get rid of the union, without success. Production fell, the company ended up going backrupt. Yeah, the union really helped out the workers there...
