Minnesota: Gopher State
I got about 100 pages into that book years ago and gave up. Did I miss anything?

Notes from Papa by Jim McKillop.

In its time it was considered one of the best novels of the era. While some of it remains relevant and are true reflections of life in Gopherland (such as the Scandinavian-German rivalries and the provincialism of many locals), I say that for the most part it is rather dated. And many of the chapters are pretty much alike. Therefore, I cannot honestly say it makes for very exciting reading.

Has anyone noticed the strange resemblance between MJ and Iron Mike??

As for the merits of the book, it does reveal the truth about Iron Mike's origin - much of his naughtiness in life did come from his terrible background. One which I know from first hand experience since I'm from that same area of Brooklyn, NY.

I met coach Cus D'Amato when I did boxing at the old PAL club and have known a number of people who knew him very well. He was tough as hell and, in fact, I was kinda afraid of the guy. But he was one heck of a motivator and it was his inspiration that made Iron Mike into what he became. Unfortunately, his death led to Tyson's downfall and he went totally out of control.

I do recommend the book as it reveals much truth about the corrupting nature of life in the ghetto and the hopes it instills in some youth. Unfortunately, boxing can also corrupt and the book illustrates how Tyson succumbed to its negativity.

In 1915 a maid killed her master. This particular murder was extremely titillating to Canadians because it took place in staid, wealthy, Protestant Toronto and involved one of the country’s most prominent families, the Masseys.

And I just finished
