On the surface, yes. But when you extract certain passages from the book, you see that it is actually a positive story designed to give encouragement to those from poor backgrounds.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn Quotes by Betty Smith

~ some are very positive and, ultimately, this is what the book is all about

QUOTES OF NOTE
“Deeply personal, sorrowful and ultimately triumphal,They Called Me Number One is an important addition to the literature on residential schools, and Canada’s reckoning with its colonial past.”
– Winnipeg Free Press

“Candidly and with brilliant clarity, Bev Sellars draws us deeply into her life while pointing a penetrating light into the darkest shadows of Canada’s racist and genocidal … residential schools. In her telling, survivors and the families of those who did not make it will feel their own stories.”

This is one of the three books I got for Xmas, it is a very good read and one has to feel empathy for those kids.

Yesterday I bought two books from WHSmith with a WHSmith gift voucher I got for Christmas.

Vikings is the third book from Scottish archaeologist, historian, TV presenter and author Neil Oliver. Like his two previous books - A History of Scotland and A History of Ancient Britain - it is based on the BBC TV series of the same name which he presented.

The Vikings famously took no prisoners, relished cruel retribution, and prided themselves on their blood-thirsty skills as warriors. But their prowess in battle is only a small part of their story, which stretches from their Scandinavian origins to England and even as far afield as Newfoundland in the west and as far as Baghdad in the east.

As the Vikings did not write their history, we have to discover it for ourselves, and that discovery, as Neil Oliver reveals, tells an extraordinary story of a people who, from the brink of destruction, reached a quarter of the way around the globe and built an empire that lasted nearly 200 years.

Drawing on the latest discoveries that have only recently come to light, Neil Oliver goes on the trail of the real Vikings. Where did they emerge from? How did they really live? And just what drove them to embark on such extraordinary voyages of discovery over 1000 years ago? VIKINGS will explore many of these questions for the first time in an epic story of one of the world's great empires of conquest.

Oliver's style is lively. He places himself inside the events which he records, imagining for example a young girl in a red dress running around a Danish port, and vividly recording the daily lives of the marauding invaders. He explains how the Vikings took on many of the characteristics of the countries where they moved, fitting smoothly into other societies: besides of course demanding obedience by bitter fighting. A Viking could never be separated from his axe and knife. But they are the forerunners of most of the European societies which we know today: including our own in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

And the other book I bought is:

Premier League: A History in 10 matches.

The book was written by Jim White, a football journalist who has written in newspapers including The Daily Telegraph. Born in Urmston in Manchester, Jim is an ardent Manchester United fan who writes a regular column for Manchester United fanzine United We Stand.

In Premier League: A History in 10 matches, Jim tells us the 21 year history of England's Premier League - the world's most popular and most-watched sporting contest, enjoyed by people from Armenia to Zanzibar - by looking at ten incredible Premier League matches over that 21 years since it was founded in 1992.

For all the accusations of greed levelled at its well-remunerated players, and the gripe that it is dominated by an elite of wealthy clubs, the Premier League has proved a huge success in footballing and commercial terms since its inaugural season of 1992-3. It has transformed the violent terrace culture of the 1970s and 1980s into sophisticated sporting theatre, a twenty-first century Circus Maximus in which an international cast of footballing gladiators strut their skills before vast crowds in gleaming stadia - and a global audience of billions.

Jim White has chosen ten epic clashes to represent the rise and rise of English football's top flight. He evokes the sweat and effort of the matches in thrilling detail, and uses them as a prism through which to view every strand of the premiership's development: he profiles players, managers and owners; charts the ebb and flow of club fortunes in footballing and fiscal terms; and brings to life the turning-points and moments of drama, joy and despair that have punctuated the first 21 years of global football's most watched league.

I just spent a year reading history doing research for my book on our local natives. I'm kinda burned out on reading right now. The short stuff on here is about all I can handle. When I was reading a lot, I loved Tom Robbins. Couldn't get enough of his turn of phrase.
Mostly I was into philosophy, science and metaphysics. Not too much fiction.
same as me. ”A theory of justice“ of John Rawls

Drawing on letters, journals, contemporary accounts, and memoirs, Children of the Klondike looks at the lives of the youngsters who witnessed the treasure hunt of the century firsthand. The large cast of characters includes Daisy Mason, whose Tagish-Tlingit father, Skookum Jim, was one of the men who discovered gold on Rabbit Creek, sparking the Klondike stampede and changing her destiny forever; the Snow siblings, the first non-Native children to cross the infamous Chilkoot Pass, nearly perishing in a blizzard along the way; and Dawsie Schultz, the Klondike’s first gold rush baby. Published by Whitecap Books, 2010.

I am pleased to announce that I have signed on with Great Old Ones Publishing and a second edition printing of THE EQUINOX is on its way for 2014! This second edition print of my debut novel will have a few extras.

  • A New Cover designed by the author
  • A Table of Contents
  • A Foreword penned by Dark Discussions: Host Philip C. Perron
  • And a short Afterword written by MJ Preston
I am very excited about this new venture and to be working with the fervent people in this small, but Class A publishing house.
My first involvement with Great Old Ones was designing the cover art and contributing a story to their debut anthology: CANOPIC JARS: Tales of Mummies and Mummification. All the folks involved, did a bang up job, turning out a quality page turner and overflowing with talent. After getting my mitts on the anthology and bearing witness to the passion of these people displayed at Anthocon in New Hampshire, I knew that this is the press I want representing my work.

Congratulations. Second printings aren't common, and the capacity to actually make some money goes up exponentially.

Having (almost) read MJ's book, I can vouch that it is an advanced course in horror and if, like me, your taste runs towards Stephen King and the macabre, you'll love this one!
