Are you going to go to the Symphony of Fire in English Bay for Canada Day there Corduroy??
Vancouver doesn't have Caanda Day fireworks this year. They're too broke and symphony of fire isn't for another month.

Canada Remembers

On Canada day we remember the sacrifices of all the brave men and women who have served, sacrificed and given their lives so that we may live in a free and democratic nation. We honor today as it also marks the 97th anniversary of the Battles of the Somme and Beaumont-Hamel.

On July 1, 1916, at Beaumont-Hamel, the men of the Newfoundland Regiment advanced over open ground into a relentless barrage of artillery and machine gun fire. Tragically, in less than half an hour, the Regiment
suffered tremendous casualties and the next day, only 68 of the approximately 800 men who went into battle would answer the roll call.

Lest we forget

Recessional

By Rudyard Kipling 1865–1936 Rudyard Kipling
1897
God of our fathers, known of old,
Lord of our far-flung battle-line,
Beneath whose awful Hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine—
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

The tumult and the shouting dies;
The Captains and the Kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

Far-called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe,
Such boastings as the Gentiles use,
Or lesser breeds without the Law—
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget—lest we forget!

For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard,
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding, calls not Thee to guard,
For frantic boast and foolish word—
Thy mercy on Thy People, Lord!

The Maple Leaf Forever

In Days of yore,
From Britain's shore
Wolfe the dauntless hero came
And planted firm Britannia's flag
On Canada's fair domain.
Here may it wave,
Our boast, our pride
And joined in love together,
The thistle, shamrock, rose entwined,
The Maple Leaf Forever.

[CHORUS]
The Maple Leaf Our Emblem Dear,
The Maple Leaf Forever.
God save our Queen and heaven bless,
The Maple Leaf Forever.

At Queenston Heights and Lundy's Lane
Our brave fathers side by side
For freedom's home and loved ones dear,
Firmly stood and nobly died.
And so their rights which they maintained,
We swear to yeild them never.
Our watchword ever more shall be
The Maple Leaf Forever

[CHORUS]

Our fair Dominion now extends
From Cape Race to Nootka Sound
May peace forever be our lot
And plenty a store abound
And may those ties of love be ours
Which discord cannot sever
And flourish green for freedom's home
The Maple Leaf Forever

Canada is a glorious and free nation which I thank God for. Being my native nation my heart has glowed, seeing it rise strong and free. I will always be a patriot, standing guard for Canada, no matter how far and wide.

I wrote a report in college about the RNR in this battle. My grandmother's cousin was killed in this battle believe it or not. They were from the Caplin Bay-Calvert area. I think it was called Caplin Bay first... then Calvert. I could be wrong.

For me, being a Canadian is a gift, as are our usually short but intense summers.

Canada Day itself is a beautiful thing with almost guaranteed awesome weather
(with a few exceptions like here in Regina in I believe 1912 or so....). A lazy day
of catching up around the home in the morning as I plan out the list of things I
wish to accomplish over the day....of which I might get to a third of them and
still be happy with a sense of accomplishment.

I plan on mowing the lawn, trimming the rose bush, laundry, ect....but if my floor
gets swept & the dishes (which I've already done) get done.....I'm good. Perhaps
an hour on the deck with a good book and good company (even if just of the four
legged variety). Maybe a game of Cribbage with a great friend. Maybe a walk
around the park with 60,000 other hot & sweaty people (but probably not).

Which pooch plays crib?

Good question, & at this point neither. The Husky is just happy when the Rotti
doesn't want to 'play' with him at this point...as with our having snow on the
ground only two months ago...the Rotti thinks it's Spring or something still...

Being a Canadian means being a part of Vancouver/British Columbia, with its smoked salmon, Nanaimo bars, maple syrup, and, of course, the loonie. I love Canada!
