What are the prerequisites of a good debater?

We had a couple threads a few years ago specifically for debating topics. There was an evolution-creation thread, and a climate change thread. There may have been a few others too, but I remember these as I was involved with those threads.

Another forum I frequent has a format more conducive to "good debate". Two participants only who agree to debate, and a set time limit for the thread to be open. It's not perfect, but it's better than open forum melees. It's not easy to have good debates when there are no formal structures in place.

Being a good debater doesn't mean the debate will be good, and that's far more important than who actually "wins".

I prefer to debate several people at once; thereby becoming a

.........massdbater.
