I can't figure out what possessed Teresa May to call this election in the first place. Climates of uncertainty, as with Brexit, almost never works to the advantage of the incumbent. It was deemed to be opportunistic gambit and was punished by the voters. Part of the problem is May herself.
She was pushing the Brexit negotiations, but was part of the 'Remain' campaign in the Referendum. There's always a backlash to revolutionary change and you need someone completely committed to the program to push things through. On top of which this must been one of the most ham handed election campaigns in British history.
She quickly positioned herself as the a NeoCon candidate, a Thatcherite clone, with an allegiance to globalist free markets, trickle down austerity at home, social libertarianism.. at odds with the true conservatives, nationalists and populists in her own Party. She's also someone who operates from a hermetic clique.
The only good thing about this is the minority partner is going to be the Democratic Unionists who are true social conservatives, anti EU, and nationalists. Hopefully they'll keep May honest. But i suspect a Brexit 'Light' will start to dominate the agenda with some lip service to sovereignty and capitulation to Brussels on trade and immigration.
One of the Conservative wags on the BBC coverage last night noted that the Conservative Party was an Absolute Monarchy moderated by Regicide. I just don't think May has the vision or political skills to reassert British independence. I think they need some new blood at the top.
