I saw the video. They were directed out of the taxi by someone who probably had a gun and pressured them into making a cash settlement. Looks like it could be armed robbery to me.

I think the 'someone with a gun' was the security guard at the gas station where they had just destroyed a bathroom.

this story is a mess, and I'm certainly not coming to any conclusions either way, and we will

probably never know the exact truth, but blaming the players 100% is too easy, i'll leave that

for the American haters, too many grey areas, too many other possibilities, I'm just leaving it

where it lays, no answer to this for me, seems both sides could be guilty of 'something', I don't

assume things.

I think with 4 different stories from 4 different guys and one guy already confessing I think we have a pretty good idea.:)

He will always be in denial as it hurts his mental image of the US. $10,800 seems like a lot of damage.

Lochte apologizes over Rio 'robbery' scandal
Rio de Janeiro (AFP) - Star US swimmer Ryan Lochte apologized to Brazil on Friday for inventing a story that he and three teammates were mugged during the Olympics, as one of them paid $10,800 to avoid charges.
The US gold medal-winning swimmers hoped to draw a line under the scandal that erupted when Lochte went public with a shocking report of how the four were mugged on their way back from a party in Rio de Janeiro.
The claim that a man posing as a police officer held them up at gunpoint early Sunday and forced them to the ground sparked a media frenzy and pushed Brazilian Olympic authorities into an embarrassed apology.
But after police declared the story was fabricated -- saying all that happened was that the swimmers were subdued by security after getting drunk and vandalizing a gas station bathroom -- the now discredited Lochte finally came clean.
"I should have been much more responsible in how I handled myself and for that am sorry to my teammates, my fans, my fellow competitors, my sponsors and the hosts of this great event," Lochte said in a statement.

Now he's published an elaborate apology. The problem, though, is that he is close to illiterate and his mealy-mouth apology is quite obviously composed by professionals. I guess that they've poured milions into the Lochte brand and now they are scrambling to save it.

One is reminded of the professional image people in the Republican party trying to bail out the boat at the same time that Trump drills new holes in it, daily.

Still can't fathom out real reason for them making up this lunacy.

They vandalised some stuff, which ok was immature and idiotic, they paid for the damage after a little 'encouragement' then got back later to the olympic accommodation, end of a boisterous evening, suffering only a very minor dent to their wallets but all turning out ok.

Then lo and behold this poorly constructed and easily disprovable claim of robbery being concocted by them, fine athletes but not so fine human beings.

Like the taxi driver gets 'lost' or they did the drugs in the bathroom and nobody was robbed, that is how much they did at wholesale prices. This was the 'paying the tab part of the drunken night and they were still high when they got back to the one place that drugs wouldn't be used openly.

At first, the Lochte story confirmed the negative stereotype of Brazil, but in truth it confirmed negative stereotypes of Americans
