Volatile Dow closes up 567 points during a rocky day of trading following Mondays historic drop (Correction)

The Dow Jones industrial average fluctuated in an unusually wide 934-point range in the first hour of trading Tuesday morning before lurching back to level by midday. In the last hour of trading, the Dow was up 500 points on the day.

Money managers urged investors to keep calm and noted that the U.S. and global economies remain strong. Veteran traders say the slide in stock prices over the past week is a natural dip: The market had run up too high, too fast and needed to let off some steam, they say.

An earlier version of this alert reported that the Dow Jones industrial average closed at 569 points. This alert has been corrected.
