Then the West should get off their butts and find some more. There are various regions of Canada that given the proper exploration techniques could very well yield rare earths. The geology is right.
Jack Lifton: North America Doesn’t Need China’s Rare Earths

The following chart singles out the rare earth metals in red (the lanthanides, plus scandium and yttrium) from all other metals and rare metals by their 2009 production rate. It also identifies the 2010 rare metals as those beginning with, and including, silver, as well as all of those produced at a rate less than that of silver in 2009.

It is true there are lots of deposits waiting to be and being developed outside of china. But the question is can we switch to our own sources before China cuts their exports off to the world? Until then in my opinion they have us by the short and curlies. Its going to be tight just like your article says....

Yep.

Truely wonderful, the ability to destroy the enemy with such minor drains on your own resources.

It worked in Vietnam for the USSR.

To that question, I not sure. I think we probably were using our sources during the Cold War era.

Jack Lifton is on glue. I assume he crams his cell phone up his ass, arms the redial and thinks loving thoughts of the 45,000 people killed daily in the war for tantalum that makes his Up-the-Crackberry vibrate so well.

Note that these govts support it - A susbstantail number of US Muslims agree that the US Govt is sincere on the War on Terror.

The ones being bombed are sure as hell.

Someone once called me a drone, and I got pissed off. Now, it's sort of a compliment.

How many secret bases do you have to have before they ain't secret any more.??........just askin.

Its not paranoia to state the truth, which is US drones are patrolling our border and on a daily basis. I really don't care as I don't go near the border, but I wonder sometimes why you feel a need to make light of anything the US does. The only paranoia I see is the US military and spy agencies because they have stirred up hornet nests all over the globe and now know that some of those hornets are coming to bite their collective asses.

I don't make light of anything the US does... I just like pointing out the paranoia and hypocricy that some of you have.

Drones patrolling on a daily basis. Get real. What are they looking for... terrist? So since Canada has led the Bombing of Libya some hornets should be coming to get you?

Don't go near the border Cliff... those drones might see you and just think you're a terrist.

Isn't that issue between Pakistan and Afghanistan ???.........Or has the US occupation of Afghanistan taken such root that it is taking liberties to police that border too??

Maybe if the US would stop poking its nose into issues that don't concern them......they wouldn't have so much angst against them.

Like THAT will happen any time soon.

Well Pakistan has authorized the stationing of Drones on their soil. Approves the flights, and yes some of the targets as well. Like any monster, you start at the top, kill that and then work your way down the ladder. Many of these terrorists travel with their families. They put their families at risk by doing so. But then again they all want to be martyrs. So look at it this way. The CIA and the US Air Force are giving them a helping hand to fulfill their wish of being Martyrs. Something like wishing for something, normally for other to do, you really do not want for yourself, but someone listens and help you with that wish.
After all what is good for the front line Martyr is good for their leadership as well.

What is so secret about a base where Predators and other drones can be flown from. Any airfield any place in the world will do, new ones have in-flight refueling capabilities.

Which is why the F 35 is commonly referred to as the last piloted fighter let. Then we come to cost - As the new technology, US the leader, comes on line i do not see the F35 purchases reaching the levels called for - then consider the pentagon will be undergoing massive cuts. the Chines with their strategy of denial of territory at significant cost. The so called missile that are called carrier killers. The drone is the new way.

Next you have the ability of China and others to destroy satellites, this would interfere with the ability or kill it as comms would be cut.

Next the Chinese attacks on all types of companies and Govt site by hacking. Shutting down industries critical to the economy - one often possibility that is commented on is running electrical plants at an overload - Plant literally destroyed. Years to repair and restore power. That does not consider how people would react going hungry.

The new frontier will then be the protection of satellites.

Another is the new plane I guess is a good name, fly anywhere in 2 hours or less and inflict massive damage.

The world of war is changing

And yes, a preemptive strike is always a policy that is not talked about, but is policy

Because it's more sinister to call them "secret" coupled with paranoia of the folks that do so call them that.

The unfortunate part is that drones are impersonal. Unlike the good old days when war was more personal, today killing is disassociated from the perpetrator. I would like to see a return to the sword and mace where combat was brutal but personal. I think there would be a lot less killing going on and a lot less collateral damage.

Even with this new tech it is not impersonal. Collateral damage always occurs - Compared to WW2 with carpet bombing cities, this is a step forward. If you wish to call it that. But always remember innocents always die in a war.

In the days of sword and mace there was plenty of killing and plenty of collateral damage. One need only to read of the Medieval Ages or Dark Ages to see what I mean.

If we are discussing them on the internet, they aren't so secret.
You got it.

But they are more accurate and save the lives of those using them.
