rum is rum, imo, darker rum isn't harder, it's just more.... molassessy? For sipping it's less harsh than the white rum people like to put in fruity drinks. You might try to find a reputable rum tasting while you're down there I like a cuba libre with nice dark rum, a wedge of lime, and lots of ice. Super sweet, super rich. So freaking good.
