Brains of liberals, conservatives structured differently: study - CTV News

CTV.ca News Staff

Date: Thursday Apr. 7, 2011 4:07 PM ET

Perhaps the reason that liberals and conservatives have such a hard time seeing eye-to-eye is because when they're compared brain-to-brain, they're built quite differently.
A new study that analyzed the brain structures of peoples' brains based on their political affiliations has found some significant differences.
Essentially, they found that liberals have more gray matter in a part of the brain associated with understanding complexity, while the conservative brain is bigger in the section related to processing fear.

The conservatives and liberals really are not that much different, perhaps an NDP brain compared to Liberals and Conservatives would be more fitting.

Isn't that why people become cons as they get older? ;)
As I am now officially retiring next week, I find it easier to resist the siren call of conservatism. Education, for me, was essential to maintaining a radical and independent mind set. Knowing what is really going on acts like Palmolive on grease (grease being conservatism). The more I see the greed, selfishness and self centeredness of conservatives, the more I am repulsed.

Obviously a lie and a falsification.

Liberals have no brain.

Of course a conservative would say that, they can't understand complexity as well as a liberal, so to the conservative it sounds like nonsense.

The more a person tries to cling to the socialist ideas acquired during a misspent youth, the more he provides the proof that he is either unwilling or unable to learn.

The author of the "study" in the OP must be such a person.

My early political preferences were brought up in a very liberal/socialistic family home

As I aged and became aware of politics and how issues "sat" with me I wandered all over the place from conservative depending upon the decision to be made to liberal - again to fit the issue..

Now my political neighborhood depends entirely upon the issue affecting the nation and its place among other nations.

There is really no "word" to describe me and my voting is rambling depending upon the topic, but I feel comfortable not being locked into one mindset religiously without an opportunity to view the other sides of issues. I am relieved there are many minds and decisions which vary widely from each other - to
have us all voting like a militant wind-up army would be disaster.

That's interesting. What Kanai and his colleagues were looking at was the correlated brain structures according to political orientation in young adults. What they didn't find was whether political affiliation or brain structure were the cause of the other.

Perhaps now, your voting pattern or rather lack of a pattern is related to your upbringing. If you are examining the complexities and uncertainties surrounding the choice you have, that's precisely what Kanai et al. found. I imagine that the next line of inquiry would be to examine a population that would have regular MRI scans of the brain, to track development of the different areas of the brain.

It's interesting to think about; I always enjoy investigations of nature versus nurture.

As people get older they become more conservative and begin to believe in a god....reality begins to slip away.

Btw, Ralph Klien has been diagnosed with dementia.
I have always seen senility as an awakening to the stupidity of chasing stuff, the American Dream, the futility of accumulating monetary wealth and becoming like a child again, learning how to play again, to understand the wonder of life instead of being a slave to the system. I welcome senility into my life and encourage others to do likewise.
