No institution I can think of in the modern world should be left to its own devices to investigate crimes within its ranks. That's a pretty simple fact. Couch it in insults of cultism or slanders against the members of said institution all you want, it's a pretty universal issue, from the army investigating its own potential war crimes, the government reviewing its own role in residential schools, to the RCMP investigating its own killings.
So, why single out and denigrate one group when it should be a pretty universal truth? That's where you'll run into accusations of bigotry.
If the people took the wheel investigating institutions and corporations there will be those who complain about the costs and that issue seems to trump justice day in and day out.No institution I can think of in the modern world should be left to its own devices to investigate crimes within its ranks.

Do you get what you pay for right now or would it cost more to meet the basics first before tackling massive institutions and corps?
Charge the people known to have instigated crimes rather than a blanket investigation of an institution? What about emotional abuse? Should we investifgate the entire entertainment industry for ****ing with people's emotions? What's the alternative when it comes to tangible victim crimes... abuse, molestation, murder?

A blanket seizure based on what? Were there financial crimes? Did they short CRA?
You can't seize what the Priest doesn't own. They aren't Pastors who get cut a monthly cheque or own their houses. Not a blanket seizure. Seize the priests' residences of the diocese, for example. Institutions should be held accountable in a way that makes sense to the institution, when they are actively impeding an investigation.

Yesterday I signed a juicy contract after spending two days dealing with Govt geeks, board members and stockholders. Not one lick of my environmental assement submitted was review by any govt agency. They took it at face value because the govt can't afford to double check the paperwork God forbid ever send an inspector out to see for themselves. One thing you seem to be ignoring is that the Church's hierarchy, by in some cases refusing to cooperate with civil authorities and removing priests from the jurrisdictions where incidents have occurred, has also made itself cuplable under many of our legal codes: interfering with an investigation is a crime, and so is covering up other criminal activities. The Church has made itself complicit through its own actions.
Many of our governments do not recognize any church, be it the Roman Catholic, the Anglican, the United, the Mormons or any other denomination, as holding any legal power to get involved in criminal matters, thus these governments do have a legitimate grievance, and one they could act on fairly simply: remove the tax exempt status of any religious institution or body that does interfere in these cases. Unfortunately, there needs to be political will to do this and I highly doubt there would be. If something like this were to come to pass, Vatican City would become the only place safe for these priests (and non-Catholics wouldn't even have that refuge).
