I have often said Chrétien’s greatest feat as PM was to make Mulrooney look like a relatively honest man.

Colpy, I see that you could not really fault any of the statistics I provided. So my conclusion that Chrétien/Martin was a golden age for Canada stands. It was a period of unparalleled peace and prosperity. No wonder people gave Liberals three back to back majorities.

So Trudeau has become immortal (or at least as long as Canada lasts) because of his contribution to Canadian polity, while Chrétien/Martin made significant contribution to the economic, cultural and social well being of the country. But as I said before, Chrétien/Martin will be forgotten in a few decades (although Martin will be remembered as the PM who legalized gay marriage), but Trudeau will not be forgotten as long as Canada is around. Especially minorities owe him a great debt for the Charter.

There is no need to fault your statistics. They aren't relevant, unless or until you can show us that they are. I mean hell, we won the Olympic gold medal in hockey while Cretin was in office. Do you also give him credit for that.

These kids are the ones who mess up my basement every weekend and every last one of them faces uncertainty.

All of them want educations and all of them question whether they will be able to afford it.

If they were to skip on post secondary they could easily find work but for how long?

We've heard zero about where our biggest investment since 1993 will stand in he next 2-6 years.

For the last forty years I have been saying that the majority of Canadians are politically stupid. This forum has proved me correct beyond any shadow of doubt.

Good side of Harper? You mean there is a good side to the Messiah?

As I understand, you are allowed to income split only on the pension, retirement income. You cannot income split the investment income. So it is not of much use to us, in the retirement (which I hope would be soon, I have been after my wife to retire, I can’t retire until she does), most of our income will come from investment, so income splitting isn’t of much use to us.

Besides, when Liberals come back into power (and it is a question of ‘when’, not ‘if’), they are not likely to get rid of income splitting. So I hardly think where Messiah is at an advantage here. If a politician wants senior citizen vote, he has to promise to leave income splitting alone, so I don’t think income splitting is going anywhere, Messiah or no Messiah.

SirJosephPorter good day, I find it fascinating and precarious to see how people would look at the small picture before the big picture, here are economists who look at Canada’s financial chart and we see bad things in it.

The TD economist, who recently projected the Canadian government's deficit would hit $82 billion over the next two years – about $18 billion more than Finance Minister Jim Flaherty projects in the budget – said he is concerned about the long-term implications of deficit financing.

I'm not sure what your point is. Most everybody is concerned about the long-term implications of deficit financing.

Peace?

Chretien took us into the current combat role in Afghanistan.

Prosperity?

Yep....because of free Trade and the GST. Not hard to balance the budget when your revenues are swelling by leaps and bounds.....because of free trade......

A golden Age?

Well, as long as you weren't an APEC protestor, or anyone that stood in the way of the Chretien mob, yeah....I'll say it wasn't bad....if you liked the Godfather......Remember, the prosperity was largely the result of Conservative policies....

Trudeau?

I have a good friend.....now Professor emeritus in History at UNB-SJ. He reflects that one of the major reasons he is glad of his retirement is that he was having to add Trudeau to his Canadian History course......and even voicing his name makes him ill.

Trudeau did great damage to this country's democratic institutions.

There are lots of people in Russia that idolize Stalin. I don't care.

Good day Cannuk, my point is reflecting on “JML’s comment that income splitting for taxation purposes, last year it saved us about $2000. This year due to the tax calculations being so mind boggling I let H & R Bloch does it for us and to my relief found we're saving $1800 this year; obviously it works best where there is a disparity between the income levels of the spouses, which is our case. For this reason alone I'd be very reluctant to get rid of Harper”.

To me when I look at the big picture of over $100B debt over 5 years, that is so scaryyyyyyyyy because if we divide $100B into 20.000.000 tax payers in canada we come up with a much biger number then the $1800 JML is saving in fact we come up with some disturbing numbers in debt per Canadian which idetifies that the $1800 JLM is saving as a carot on the stick by Harper the
Minipulator ..

So what you are saying is Harper should have told the Three Stooges (Layton, Dion, Duceppe) to "piss Off" when they insisted he start shoveling money off the train like a mad stoker.....

I agree.

We've got a Conservative gov't......but a Liberal budget.

Good day Colpy, Harper is the man who 7 months ago was telling us we are not going to run a deficit, 7 months ego Harper did not have a plan and still to this day he doesn’t, the only reason Harper is still in business is because the Liberals have just undergone through an engine refit and things are looking brighter for the Liberal Party of Canada, much brighter then for the Harper Conservatives. The reason why Canada has a better Banking system is because the Martin Liberals had a lot more to do with intelligent organization which left Canada looking good. The Harper Conservatives have done nothing at all to show leadership and innovation.
Hiding behind GG skirts is Harpers brand of Government,
and loads of red ink in the $100B range .

Socrates, that is blasphemy, sacrilege, heresy, whatever. Now that we have Messiah in power in Ottawa, Paradise has appeared in Canada. Previously we had 13 years of pure Hell, Lucifer was governing in Ottawa.

At least that is the Conservative spin. The way I look at it, we have had sensible, prudent fiscal management from 1993 to 2005, then when Messiah came to power, we went back to the bad old Conservative ways, with astronomical deficits and poor economic management in general.

Anyway, Flaherty made a royal mess of the economy in Ontario under Mike Harris, and then he lied to Ontarians during the election campaign that the deficit was 2 billion $, when actually it was 6 billion $. What makes anyone think that he is going to manage the affairs in Ottawa any different from the mess he created in Ontario?

Canadians voted for Messiah simply because they got bored with Liberals, they were in power for13 years. People have a short memory; they forgot the mayhem and misery of Mulroney years. But Messiah will recreate it soon enough.

But don’t tell that to conservatives. To them paradise has appeared in Canada (I assume any time a conservative is governing in Ottawa, it is a paradise to Conservatives), they will be in Hell (i.e. liberal rule) soon enough. Let them enjoy their paradise.

Read in the paper the other day, that Harris is working "behind the scenes", along with Tom Long (would be leader - back room specialist), to groom the next candidate for leader of the Ontario Cons. I forget his name, hope I never have to hear it again.

Then there's Flatulance's wife who is going to give it a go, too.

Nice.

As long a people REMEMBER, this should ensure a long Lib reign in Ont. Mebee good, mebee bad..........hoonose!!

Peace?

Colpy, he also kept us out of Iraq. If your Messiah had been in power, he would have taken us into Iraq, he said so himself. So, peace? Absolutely.

Prosperity?

Most certainly. Your political bias notwithstanding, facts, figures have a way of intruding upon one’s political beliefs. Facts don’t’ lie, it was a period of unparalleled prosperity in Canada.

Yep....because of free Trade and the GST. Not hard to balance the budget when your revenues are swelling by leaps and bounds.....because of free trade......

Now this is your political bias speaking. I know the conservative dogma is that anything good is done by Conservative, everything bad done by Liberals. So I assume somehow you give credit to economic prosperity (do you even agree that there was economic prosperity during Liberal rule?) to Mulroney, Joe Clark, Diefenbaker etc. (or do you go back even further?). But again, facts do not lie. We had unparalleled economic prosperity during Liberal rule, and people give the credit where it is due, to Liberals (and mainly to Martin).

Remember, the prosperity was largely the result of Conservative policies....

But of course, Colpy, of course. Policies of Mulroney, Clark, Diefenbaker no doubt (or even further back?). That may be your conservative dogma. Canadians give full credit to Liberals, that is why they gave them four wins in a row.

I have a good friend.....now Professor emeritus in History at UNB-SJ. He reflects that one of the major reasons he is glad of his retirement is that he was having to add Trudeau to his Canadian History course......and even voicing his name makes him ill.

So your good friend doesn’t like Trudeau, big surprise there. As I said in Canada (especially in Ontario and Québec), Trudeau remains hugely popular.

Trudeau did great damage to this country's democratic institutions.

That is your opinion. In my opinion, Canada owes Trudeau a great debt for the Charter and the Constitution.

There are lots of people in Russia that idolize Stalin. I don't care.

You compare Trudeau only to Stalin? Are you getting soft? I thought you would compare him to Hitler. You disappoint me, Colpy.

Nuggler, Conservative leader in Ontario, John Tory, was a good man. Too bad he didn’t stand a chance. Harris had so pissed off Ontario voters that no conservative had a snowball’s chance in Hell of winning power. He did in Ontario what Mulroney did in Canada, he totally enraged the electorate towards Conservatives.

John Tory was a good leader at the wrong time. We will see how the next one performs. My hope is that Ontarians still remember the mismanagement and the horrible mess created by Harris for the next one or two elections. McGuinty has already managed the unheard of feat for Liberals in Ontario, two back to back majorities. It remains to be seen if he can make it three or four in a row.

Well, Sir Porter, it has become absolutely clear that you are a hard-core Liberal supporter.

Funny how you work up the unmitigated gall to sarcastically call Harper "Messiah", when I and other Conservatives often criticize him.

Meanwhile you grovel before a false picture of Jean "the Don" Chretien, the most corrupt PM in our history, and literally worship Pierre Trudeau, who did more than any other PM to thwart effective democracy in this country.

One doesn't know whether to laugh, cry, or vomit......but I'm leaning towards the latter.

Then, in midst of a sycophantic post expressing your undying love for your Liberal masters..........amongst that great pile of manure, one finds this "gem":

Canadians voted for messiah simply because they got bored with liberals

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH

Sorry, I'm getting hysterical.

The people ousted the Liberals because the arrogant bastards stole millions and millions and millions and millions and millions of the taxpayers' dollars.

Full stop.

Geezus! Are you really that deluded???????????????????????????????
