So does ON PQ and SK. SK will soon have the largest diamond mine on the planet. Drive up there (NWT) and let me know how Ekati is coming along these days.

You NEVER increase taxes during a down turn and you NEVER yank the social safety net.. NEVER NEVER EVER.

That's just bunk talking points from Wall Street.

Reagan and Clinton both, raised taxes during recessions, and the US recovered with job creation to boot. If people, and not investors have confidence in an economy, then they will spend their money. The US economy depends to a large degree on consumer spending...economists are rarely so grounded as to acknowledge this, or history for that matter. It seems it's only important these days if investors are spending and are confident...

What money? If nobody is working then nobody is producing and that means no money to collect for taxes. It's really simple. Lower taxes encourages spending and investment. You can't spend or be taxed on something you don't have. 0% of 0 is what? 0?

So just increase the taxes on those who are producing and paying then hope like hell they will find a few extra bucks to expand and hire the 0s?

Great idea.

Great idea.

Yeah...it worked for Clinton and Reagan. Greece and Ireland have zero corporate income tax rates...

Let's compare the US tax rate to other nations, to see where they stack up against other more robust economies at the moment, tax revenue as a percent of GDP:

There's room to maneuver.

If asking a billionaire to pay the same tax rate as a Jew, uh, as a janitor makes me a warrior for the working class, I wear that with a badge of honor. I have no problem with that.

Maxine Waters found speech to blacks 'curious'

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Maxine Waters says she's not sure who President Barack Obama was talking to when he told black Americans to quit complaining and follow him into the battle for jobs and opportunity.
The California Democrat, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, says she found the president's language "a bit curious." She says Obama didn't address Hispanics in such a blunt manner and would never use that language in a speech to a gathering of gays or Jews.
Interviewed Monday on CBS' "Early Show," Waters said black Americans fully support Obama and are working to promote his agenda. She says African-Americans want voters to be enthusiastic about Obama in 2012.
In Saturday's fiery speech to the caucus, Obama told blacks to "put on your marching shoes" and "stop grumbling.'"

Obama Lies about the ‘Do-Nothing Congress’

‘This Congress, they are accustomed to doing nothing, and they’re comfortable with doing nothing, and they keep on doing nothing,” President Obama whined at a September 15 Democratic National Committee gathering in a private Washington residence.
Now that his “Blame Bush” hobby horse finally has retired to the glue factory, Obama resorts to pinning America’s woes on the “Do-Nothing Congress.” If only these parliamentarians would stop taking endless lunches, sipping cocktails at Capitol Hill happy hours, and napping at their desks, America might have some chance of returning to normal.

N.W.T. has diamonds!

My wife's sister in law was working in a diamond mine somewhere north east of Yellowknife, we haven't heard from her for a couple of years so I just tried emailing her to see if she still works there. I heard she got laid off once and later I heard she was back working there, but it's been a couple of years.

Knock off the ageist crap JLM. If you can't contribute to the discussion then butt out. You know the old adage, about wise men and fools, and who speaks in what circumstances? Pointing out that Petros is older isn't wise...

That appears to be income tax, only, not total taxes. Unless the whole kit and caboodle is being compared, there is no use in comparing any of it.

The end is near for Harper too. From recent news it would seem that he has his nose really close to someone's ass.

Interesting.

an aside: but does anyone else think that Harper had too many Botox treaments?? His face hardly moves and for the most part is expressionless. :p

Ocean Breeze; :-P gosh said:
Not so fast, it's only a matter worth discussing if ALL taxes are shown. Case in point, lots of people praise Oregon for having no sales tax, but I didn't know until I talked to an Oregonian that their property taxes are draconian.
