Left to itself would the market have reduced pollutants to the extent they have been cut? I don't think so.

Of course not. It's an external component that the market won't consider until there is an actual cost associated. That can be done with cap and trade, or with a pigovian tax. The market will decide which is the most effective method to meet targets. Scrubbers happened to be the best available technology for the price. This wasn't because of government say so, but because of market R&D and financial planning.

"And you used to contribute to WWF? You expect us to believe that? That would be like an Atheist claiming that he sends money to televangelists."

Here you go again, SirJosephPorter! Surely you are judging others by the wretched image you see in the mirror.

For years - once a year - I sponsored a colleague of mine who climbed the stairs right to the top of the CN Tower. It was on behalf of the World Wildlife Fund.

Northern Ontario,
Any mathematicians in here???????

Some have claimed that the demand for electricity dropped by 10 percent in Toronto last night.....
The greater Toronto area has a population of appr. 4.5 millions while the whole province is 13.1 million...so Toronto is about one third of the province...
A friend in the control booth of one of the hydro stations up north told me that the drop in power was about 4% last night..

IESO EARTH HOUR confirm this,

If two third of the province drops the average to 4% how much did the rest of the province use;-)

Toronto down from 15% last Year
Overall province from 7%

Methinks the fad is wearing off:roll:

If you say so. I still find it hard to believe that somebody belonging to far right will do anything to help any of the environmental groups.

Are you kidding? That is a huge response. Just by switching off one or two lights (that is really all it amounts to, since most people already switch off the lights in the rooms that they are not in) I would hardly exepct any decline in usage.

So 15% down and 7% down represents a huge response. It has to be, to reduce the consumption by any factor at all.

I DO say so.

And I find it even harder to believe that somebody who belongs to FAR, FAR Left like you contributed anything, ever, money or your time to any cause, other than empty rhetorics.

This "Earth Hour" has come and gone like yesterday's Bean Dip.
Perhaps a Billion people observed it by turning out their lights for
an hour, and perhaps the number of people that have even ever
heard of "Earth Hour" is less than a Billion....who really knows...

It's success or failure will attempt to be measured and proven by
those that think it's necessary to do so in order to back up their
own personal bias or whatever....

Personally, I think it was a success, and I had a great time!! Here's
the results that I'll post to join the fray with pictures of cities (lighted
& dark) and percentages from power stations.

I mentioned "Earth Hour" at about 8:45pm & suggested that we turn
off the lights & the Fights for an hour (creating an awareness), and
we all laughed and had a good time. The awareness was created
though...

Northern Ontario,
Again the tunnel vision expert has a reading problem
from 15% to 10% in Toronto and from 7% to 4% province wide is a huge success..
I would hate to see what is considered a failure:lol:

Alternatively, focusing on one year (and one province or city) could be considered tunnel vision. If the previous 2009 Earth Hour saw huge drops compared to previous the year, perhaps due to some weather related energy usage on that day, then in a year where those conditions are gone it will look poor by comparison.

It could also be true as you say that the fad is wearing off, but the data we have posted here in this thread doesn't permit any kind of conclusion like that.
