Unless it's free electricity, turning on an un-used light will always add to your bill ;-)

I know that.;-) What I meant was that it probably won't be a huge increase. And who knows? Perhaps he is using his neighbour's electricity to power his marijuana crop.;-):p

Northern Ontario,
I had a second look at the data posted here and all that is to be found is propaganda by wwf....hardly unbiased;-)
even on the internet I couldn't find anything from ontario hydro for last year or previous years....

Good, your next hydro bill will be higher...

Quite so. Talk of cutting off one's nose to spite somebody. They are the ones who will have to pay for higher usage. And they think that gave it in the neck to Earth Hour.

Perhaps we should have Earth Hour where we switch off heating for one hour. Then watch all these yahoos putting the heat up to 90 or 100 degrees in response to that, and swelter in heat, sweating like a stuck pig. But hey, they will have given it in the neck to Earth Hour. Or maybe they will crank up the heat to 100 degrees and put on air conditioning. That will really send a message to earth hour.

Again the tunnel vision expert has a reading problem
from 15% to 10% in Toronto and from 7% to 4% province wide is a huge success..
I would hate to see what is considered a failure:lol:

And what has that got to do with anything? They said that it was cooler this year compared to last year, so heating usage was higher this year. That accounts for the lower drop this year. The absolute number is not really important. The fact is that many people participated in Earth Hour, in spite of some conservative hysterical anti-environmental voices here.

I found this by using the search function on IESO's webpage, the graph for Earth Hour 2009.

Compare that to Earth Hour 2010:

It's clear that the predicted energy consumption was very different.

Coincidentally, IESO also has some market research if you search their website, asking Ontarians about what they plan to do, during Earth hour, and what they can do about energy efficiency. If people are already implementing energy saving measures as a result of previous Earth hours, or otherwise, then the yearly gains on one day would be expected to be less.

I missed my chance last summer ...they put one of them power saver meters while I was out of town...I could have had a receiver inside the house to be able to monitor power usage...but they will soon implement a schedule when you can dry your clothes and other high energy use equipment during off peak hours for cost saving.
Right now that option is only available to industry.
The paper mill here uses certain high power draw machinery only during off peak hours ......Although the paper machines run 24 hrs
I hear that option will be available to everybody soon.....maybe they have it down south already..

Nice options to have. I doubt PEI has that, though I haven't looked into it. Most of the power on the Island comes from NB anyways. Jamie and I use the clothes drier most often after midnight. She's not in bed til late anyways, she's an owl...lol

Northern Ontario,
With all that neat fancy electronic equipment you can plan better...my thermostat turns the the heat down 2 celcius degrees at 11pm and turns it back up at eight am....that power meter they installed can be red from the hydro office 80 miles away (no more meter readers) and my gas and hydro bill com online I have comparison charts for only two years since they only started that the winter of 2009.
Were only starting to have the tools for intelligent cost saving...(or energy saving if you're an environmentalist)

Northern Ontario,
That is why I say that one hour a year is just a (feel good) thing for city folks that is just a spit in the ocean..... while some of us do it all year around albeit to save money, but we still do it........

Conservatives support very few environmental initiatives, Extrafire. They normally don’t believe in saving the environment. To them, human beings come first, anything else (animals, environment, ecology) can perish..
Well you got one thing kinda right. Human beings do come first. I will (and have) kill a chicken and eat it. Wouldn't dream of doing that to a human. I will swerve into traffic to avoid hitting a child. Won't do that for a dog. I'll try to avoid it, but not to any extent that would involve property damage to me.

And you sort of got it right in saying that conservatives support very few environmental initiatives. That's becasue most initiatives are political and only masquerade as environmental.

I don’t think it needs a rocket scientist to figure out that dumping raw sewage into lakes and rivers is a safety issue. If you happen to drink that water it will make you sick.

An environmental issue is one where there no immediate danger to safety, but there may be long term danger. That is where drilling in Alaska, cap and trade etc. come into picture.
 Is everyone keeping up with SJP's unilateral revising of the definition of "environmental"? Have the dictionary publishers been notified? Has Wiki been updated? Have the environmental activist groups been told to modify their activities to conform to the new paradigm?

What a pathetic attempt to maintain your illusiory view that conservatives don't care about the environment.

So you don’t think much of endangered species legislation. About what I figured.
I'm very much in favor of conservation of endangered species. I'm very much opposed to taking an act that is supposed to protect endangered species and using it to further political goals.
