CBC News - Windsor - Take down flags, homeowners told

Some residents in a quiet Belle River, Ont., retirement community are making a lot of noise over their right to fly the Canadian flag.

The Cooper's Mill Retirement Community homeowners' association says no additions or substitutions are permitted to the exterior of homes without permission, and it has asked a few homeowners to take down their flags.

However, the residents of the community east of Windsor say their flags aren't going anywhere.

"I said I didn't put it up there to take it down, I said I put it up there to stay there unless you make me take it down," said Cooper's Mill resident Charles Strong.

His neighbours across the street are just as defiant.

Brian and Linda-Lee Cassidy refuse to take down their flag.

"[The association refuses] to back down and I refuse to take my flag down, so we're actually at a stalemate," Brian Cassidy said.

Flags called 'trailer trashy'

The Cassidys said they didn't ask for permission to put up the flag, but said they didn't think they had to.

Brian Cassidy said the association has received letters of complaint from other residents.

"They used the phrase 'It's starting to look trailer trashy.' A, that's an insult to the Canadian flag, B, that's an insult to people that live in mobile home units," he said.

The association has refused to comment on the issue.

How is having a Canadian Flag hanging from your house or in your yard an "Insult" to the Flag, let along to people living in trailer homes?

I thought we were all Canadians, thus it wouldn't be an insult to see the symbol of the country you live in and are a citizen of...... and I also thought that raising the Canadian flag and displaying it was what you're supposed to friggin do with it..... so how does that insult the flag?

I think the only thing that's "Trailer Trashy" are the idiots who complained in the first place with such stupid arguments.

Sure, maybe the Community homeowner's association has the right to determine what people put on their homes or take off..... but the country's flag?

Try pulling that stunt in the US and see how long it takes someone to let you know of their disapproval.

What about those living there who served in the military?

Who's going to tell them whether they can have the flag outside of their home or not?

They must be related to those wads in NB who tried to stop the national anthem from being played in schools.

The complaint was that it's trailer trashy, the response from the home owner was that calling the Canadian flag trashy is an insult to the flag (just to clarify a bit).

I get the idea that this is kind of a condo with no really suitable place to hang a flag for each unit according to the The Cooper's Mill Retirement Community homeowners' association. Maybe this association should put up a nice flag pole with a flag in a prominent place to try and satisfy all rather than get in a battle I don't think they can win.

I think when you sign on to live in a condo, you sign on to live in a condo. I think they're ridiculous, horrid places, that in their striving to not be 'trailer trash' end up somehow as something even worse. (my apologies to all you who may live in rigid condos like this and like them). Spending your time trying to control how your neighbours look is the most bizarre thing modern humans engage in, and evidence of truly shallow, self absorbed people. No condo board can ever 'win', as no matter what, no group of people larger than two will ever be happy with all the choices made by those around them.

Agreed, with all the crap that the Government passes, you definately would have to be trailer trashy (see Patriotic) to fly the Maple Leaf flag. I rather see this one flying:

A Canadian flag we can be proud of!

or, alternatively, in my province (outside of Victoria and Vancouver) I see this one get flown much more in the Okaganon.

Oh, I think because I posted two Union Jacks that I'll probably get a Quebecois or a frothing idiot after me.

Yes you do "sign on" to live in a condo whether it is a retirement home or whatever. I'm sure the rule against displaying flags was in the document they all signed, though it was likely called an "unauthorized improvement" or something. I'm not sure I would be that confident if I had to fight a bunch of seniors in court who wanted to show the flag. Just a few ounces of intelligence should dictate a compromise of some kind.

Yeah buy into a retirement community with strict rules so that you don't have to put up with anyone's crap and then get pissed off that some up tight asshole doesn't want to put up with your crap. National pride aside, read the contract you sign and stop being an ignorant fool. It's that simple.

Reminds me of people who lease a car, then get upset at the mileage charges, damage charges, etc...well, it aint your car, you're renting it. Read the damn contract.

Yeah, it's bad enough when you have people who don't mind their own friggin' business, it's that much worse when ignorant people don't mind their own friggin' business. We lived in trailers for 11 years (and might still be in one had circumstances been different) Probably best (for the purpose of taking the spot light off these imbeciles) to kill this thread.

It's probably bad for sales to Americans as plenty of people are bailing out of Detroit at an incredible pace.

I maybe jumping to unjustified conclusions here, but would those "neighbours" who so vigorously objected to the flag of their country have the "courage" to voice the same opinion if the flag was green with a crescent moon on it, or red with a bunch of stars on it?
