Anyway, back to the topic: I think the root of unbelief is called good sense, or logic, or reason. But mix in a little more good sense and you get agnosticism (at least my brand of it). :D

I just asked for clarification and you ASSume I thought you were talking about me. Have another sniff of glue.
It was your words that introduced the question of whether or not I was talking about you.
"Assuming about me again? Tsk tsk tsk."
"Why did you post that? What relevance has it? Or did you mean that it describes me?"
Bye

Put all your faults onto me. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle goes the worm.
I asked for clarification, idiot.
The truly Christian answer would have been, "No, I wasn't referring to you, I was..."

In the hood (any hood) you should seek the mans favour. To do otherwise is the square root of stupid. God is a popular excuse to come into a mans pasture uninvited and be boarish with someone elses sheep. Even God said to knock first don't assume you have permission because you own a book.

I think perhaps I should expand on my previous comment that the root of atheism is reason.
I think that it is people's curiosity and the resulting thoughts of that curiosity. People just aren't content to accept answers like "just because Indra says so", or "just because Allh says so", or "just because "God" says so" and seek deeper explanations about the universe, its contents, human behavior, and life in general. We seek reasonable answers to our reasonable questions. It's easier to relate to "Joe Juniper lies about screwing around on his wife because he has antisocial personality disorder" rather than "because he's evil".

Obviously many millions of people are ready to accept any story that saves them the pain of reason. Most people aren't curious and would far sooner colour inside the lines. This makes them easy victims to false religious fellows like myself.
We will now sing hymne #69, The Illustrious Beautiful Rodent

That very well could be, considering there is way more "faithful" people than atheists scooting around rationalising their behaviors and attitudes.
We will now sing hymne #69, The Illustrious Beautiful Rodent
"Onward Christian beavers, marching as to war...
with the bark of willow, going on before."

Is it "unbelief" or disbelief or perhaps non-belief?

Of all the people on here I think you are the least confused.

Atheism is a rebellion against authority. There is only one authority in anybody's life and that is themselves. Once people come to terms with that there would be no need for rebellion. They would be free to believe whatever they want.

Religion is the root atheism. People with discerning and critical minds will reject religion as self proclaiming authority. Unfortunately they think they have throw the creator out with the bath water.

Speak for yourself.

After a fashion, I agree.

Religion is the root atheism.
Nope. Atheism is the disbelief in deities, not the disbelief in religions. Obviously, religions exist. Deities may not exist.
People with discerning and critical minds will reject religion as self proclaiming authority.
Then they'd also reject governments and stuff, too.
Unfortunately they think they have throw the creator out with the bath water.
Why is that unfortunate? It's the whole idea behind atheism.

It is the audacity of the self proclaimed authority of religions that turns people off to religion. Religions, except for Buddhism, are usually connected with deities, so many people reject the deities along with the religion. For many, they go hand in hand.

As for governments... who needs them. The only purpose I can see is that people have something to complain about. They collect taxes to do what? What do they actually do with our money?

Probably. I know Les was turned off from religions by the lack of evidence that supports their entire basis. He'd be turned off of the entire thing anyway even if their weren't religions. One of the funniest things he says about that is that in the Bible it says one should build their house not on sand, but on rock. Well, there's nothing solid about the belief in myths, he says. :D

I don't think Confucianism or Taoism have gods either but I may be wrong about Confucianism.

I think there are some uses for gov'ts but they should be kept to a minimum and people should have the last word, not politicians.

I reject religion. I accept faith.
