Hmmm, rights v. the public interest.

Interesting conundrum.

Skook, what's your full take on this?

In the context of this happening in the U.S. with their plethora of laws covering search and siezure; if the guy is properly licensed for open carry what's the deal here?

Citizens called in, seemingly ignorant of the laws of their state/city that allow for "open carry".
Cops responded and demanded his weapon, seemingly ignorant of the laws that allowed for "open carry" AND illegal search and siezure.

So what we have here is a whole bunch of ignorance causing a non-event that was cleared up by a citizen who knew his rights and having the ability to quote the particular case history resulting in various court's upholding those rights.

Nothing to see here.

My state allows "Open Carry" for anyone that is allowed to legally own a firearm. I occasionally wear a revolver in a holster (which is "Open Carry"), when I am out doing some range shooting. I generally have people that ask, "What kind of a gun is that"?

It's a replica Walker Colt, a .44 caliber black powder revolver that is 11 inches long.
It uses the same powder charge as a .45 or .50 caliber rifle does.

I've had several Cops ask if they can handle it, because they had never seen anything like it.

"Student" says it all, papers from a learning institute, no savvy about real life and his mouth just clinches it. The idiot better hope that cop never catches him jaywalking. For all he knew a guy packing the same kind of gun could have just robbed a bank and the cop is certainly under no obligation to give details of ongoing investigations. In this case I give the cop 10, the loser 0.

A horse pistol!!!!

Absolutely cool.

Although you must be wearing suspenders to keep your pants up. You know, back in the day, they used to make holsters for the horse, so you could carry as many as four of those ahead of the saddle for easy access......

Most powerful handgun made before the .357 Magnum, which came out in about 1935.

More like hand cannon than pistol.I bet if you emptied all four of those your shoulder would ache for a week.

Seems there are always some who like to push the limits. I believe it is a logical push back against the continuous attack on firearms ownership and citizens rights. Yes is was a young law student, but do we not give young political science and arts students even more rope than that?
There are a few overly officious police (and other officials) everywhere, part of the human condition and if not resisted by law the situation will become violent eventually. The "public interest" has IMO, been used conveniently by those who claim to speak for the public but with their own more narrow agenda.

A classic example is an article i posted the other day.....
http://forums.canadiancontent.net/news/107517-federal-ndp-critics-say-harper.html

How anyone can equate the end of the LONG GUN registry to criminal gang shootings is beyond me, but that would appear to the casual reader to be the implication as it includes the words "gun control", the two are not even remotely related but the effect of such disingenuous crap is well known and accepted among political weasels.

As the population grows there are way more Ox's to be gored, both real and imagined.

The perception of the .357 in the public eye used to make me laugh.
I remember (mostly) young members of the local AFGA saying things like. "I want a .357 mag for Bear protection" like they were talking about a bloody Howitzer. Some of us would  and inform them that what they considered a wimpy rifle, the 30.30, had more energy at 50+ yards than the vaunted .357 had at the muzzle and that supposedly "super pistol" was only a last resort weapon in fact.
I had the first Ruger Super Blackhawk .41 mag in the neighborhood, i did not get the .44 mag because i subscribed to Jack O'Connor's thinking regarding velocity vs mass.
The younguns are inclined to mix Hollywood with fact.
