If the government had bailed them out it would have made no difference, the credit freeze would have happened anyway, because by then in was undeniable that all those bundled mortgage investments were virtually worthless, and no-one knew who all had them.
There is no evidence for that, Extrafire. Sub prime mortgages was the cause for the recession, every recession is triggered by something (the 2000 – 2002 was triggered by the collapse of dot com bubble). However, until Lehman Brothers went belly up, banks were still lending.
Once Lehman Brothers went bankrupt, all the credit activity froze overnight. If a well established, well known, large body like Lehman Brothers can go belly up, that meant nobody was safe. Then it became necessary to take the drastic action of two stimulus packages (1.5 trillion dollars) to get the credit flowing again.
Lehman Brothers was the trigger that turned what would have been run of the mill recession into an almost depression. Apparently that weekend (when Lehman Brothers went belly up), we were really staring down an abyss. If Bush had not come up with the stimulus package, we may have plunged into depression within a week or two (if you remember, he announced the package in a hurry, within days of Lehman going bankrupt). Depriving the free markets of credit is like depriving oxygen to human body.
In retrospect, Bush made a mistake by not baling out Lehman Brothers. Of course, it wouldn’t have been easy to do; the move would have been intensely unpopular. But according to many economists, that would have prevented the credit freeze.

It is nonsense to criticize Obama because he did not publish an article in Harvard Law Review (or because he did not author a legislation as a Senator). Proper criticism would be based on his policies.
FOX News is a mouthpiece of the Republican Party, YJ. Why should I pay into Republican coffers by subscribing to it? Recently a FOX news reporter was caught on video inciting the tea party marchers in Washington.
With the official endorsement of the tea party protesters, I don’t’ think FOX even makes any pretense of objectivity, now even FOX tacitly admits to being the mouthpiece of the Republican Party. The video which surfaced of the FOX reporter inciting the tea party mob is the clear proof of that.
