Canadian Bankruptcy Statistics - (1980 - 2009)

BAnkruptcy rates for 1980-2008, again not surprising.

JLM, let me quote from the link you gave.

Business Consumer
Bankruptcies Bankruptcies

2008 6164 90,610
1990 11,642 42,782

Increase (Decrease) (5478 ) 47,828

% Increase (Decrease) (47.1%) 111.8%

Compared to 1990, personal bankruptcies are double today, but business bankruptcies are only half as many as there were in 1990. So the picture is not quite black and white as you seem to think, is it?

Regarding suicide, the rate is clearly higher today, and this is one of the negatives. Part of the reason probably is enhanced freedom of religion today. Religion frowns upon suicide. When influence of religion becomes weaker (as it has in the past 50 years), then taboo against suicide is not so strong.

There is also another side to it. 50 years ago, suicide was illegal. So some of the suicides could well have been classified as accidental death (to prevent the shame, the embarrassment to the family).

And don't forget the food! We can now get strawberry jam with 10 ingredients instead of just 2 or 3 back in '59. And lots of other things too. One of my favourites is the "self-cleaning" breakfast cereals...those that contain trisodium phosphate, a chemical cleaner. Never had that back in '59.

Yep, there's a lot to be said for progress.

oh boy, I'll run right out and buy 6 of those. lol

But the driver of the 1959 jobbie dies, and the driver of the 09 spills his coffee, and walks away without a scratch.

Which just proves that life was not only more fair in '59, it was just better and more "just"...and here's what I mean:

1. The driver of the 09 caused the crash because he spilled his coffee while taking it from his built-in cup holder (the '59 didn't have such distractive options...it was built for driving, not for eating, drinking, talking on the phone, watching GPS screens, DVDs, etc....)
2. The innocent party in the '59 was killed, while the driver of the 09 walked away with no sense of personal responsbility in the crash ("It's not my fault!") which is another example of our failed modern system of failing to assign fault for stupidity
3. The manufacturer of the cup holder, the car company, the car dealership, the coffee cup manufacturer, the coffee shop, and the coffee shop employee who sold the coffee are all named in a lawsuit launched by the victim's team of lawyers, thus missing the real target but causing large expenditure in legal fees and court costs

The only "justice" in all this (if there is any) is that the widow of the victim will still be able to drive the '59 immediately after the accident.

If it was '59 - back when men was men, and women was glad of it  - she would drive it over to the house of the driver that caused the accident, and "accidentally" drive it through his living room wall and nail him to the wall as he was enjoying his second latte of the day. And she would end up with a new hood ornament as a bonus. And everyone on the street would cheer because justice had been served.

Ah, the good old days!

"So the picture is not quite black and white as you seem to think, is it?"- And how black and white do I think it is? Actually those figures make perfect sense to me- When businesses apply for financing they generally require more money than individuals, so I would think the lending institutions scruitinize them more closely & probably more so as time goes on.

Quite so, JLM. But the point is, not all bankruptcies are up in the past 50 years, it is more complicated than that.

No, she'd have to ask permission from her husband to do anything.

True, but he - being the dead accident victim - wouldn't likely have any strong objection. Dead was still dead, even in '59 when most things were better.

I doubt it. Those things are like tanks in comparison to cars these days.
and the driver of the 09 spills his coffee, and walks away without a scratch.
.... except for the broken nose from the schrapnel encasing the balloon.
lol You were replying to a mechanic, TP. I'm quite sure he knows more about vehicles than you.
He was rear ended by a Hyundai Pony one time. The Pony hit the back bumper of his 1978 Cordoba at about 35 kliks and folded up like an accordion. The teacher that was in a hurry to get home was ok but awfully mad. The Cordoba was missing a little quarter inch chunk of the rubber strip off the bumper. Les was humored by it. That means he was alive and laughing about the Pony being mushed.

Hasn't anyone figured out that if there are still people starving to death or living under opression it is IMPOSSIBLE for YOUR life to have improved.

I mentioned that in a previous page. No-one made a glib reply to it. Actually no-one made any reply to it.

They must think that their mud & stick hut is better than everyone elses mud and stick hut simply because their sticks are cut straighter (lumber) and their mud is press formed between paper (drywall).

I must be king. I put a steel roof on my staight stick and pressed mud board hut.

Oh so good I tell ya. Oh so good.

I've seen houses with sod roofs in Canada. Apparently it works really well as insulation, water barrier. And one can have a garden up there, too. And it's cheap like dirt. lol

A soddy. 100 years ago this was your only chance of survival.
