Well now, that got some attention....

Yes I know the 12 is maxed out for grouse........to make matters worse the thing is choked Full and Modified........ :)

BUT I use the lightest loads available in the smallest shot size.....cheaper than any other shotgun ammo.......and I have never blown a bird apart with it........the modified gives me good wing shots (which I habitually miss :)), the full gives me range, and when they are close? Use the Full, Shoot the head off. I don't miss 'em on the ground. And the gun weighs less than 7 lbs, is a joy to carry, well balanced.......and I can carry a couple of #2 Mags for coyotes.......

I would not trade it off for any other shotgun.....

Well, maybe a SxS in 28 ga........but it would have to be just right......

Hey, despicable individual. I can understand someone being a sportsman and hunting deer with a bow and arrow, or a shotgun for birds on the wing, assuming the prey is eaten. But bragging about shooting the head off, or shooting coyotes (what do you do with the carcass anyway?) makes you despicable.
I bet you sit around a garbage pile to shoot bear, too.

(sigh) take a valium!

I don't brag about shooting the heads off, I do it instead of aiming at the body, and blowing the edible part of the bird to pieces.....what part of the word "close" do you not understand?

I have never shot a bear, despite having a nose-to-nose disagreement over right-of-way with one at a range of less than 10 feet. And yes, I had an adequate rifle aimed at him.......but he backed off.....good enough.

I don't shoot bears in dumps (obviously) that is illegal.

I do shoot coyotes. They are varmits. I had stopped shooting at them, but now fully intend to start again. If the coyotes in the park had been hunted, had not lost their fear of man, a promising 19 year old folk singer would still be alive.......

I'm not talking about shooting bears in dumps, but was referring to the bait bear hunters use, as a pile of garbage.

Perhaps people who intend to mingle with nature should learn how to protect themselves and behave in various situations.

Like I said earlier: respect nature, don't destroy it.

12 ga. for a bird a km and a half or two? wow We use the .22 or rocks. I used to have a .410/.22 over and under but I gave it to daughter. Les hit a grouse with #6 shot out of the 12 one time and the bird disappeared in a puff of feathers.

I prefer a .22 for grouse, unfortunately hunting regulations are provincial and it is verboten to shoot upland game or migratory birds with a "firearm that fires a single projectile" in Nova Scotia. Not only that, you cannot carry such a firearm in a wildlife habitat you do not own unless it is for protection against wildlife or there is a season open for which you can use one, (such as hare, when my .22 comes out). I have a 12 ga Winchester 2400 semi, full choke, that will obliterate grouse at ranges less than 40 yards, its use is limited to open country, not the bush.

Any hunters around here?

Any success this season?

Type of weapon?

There is lots of talk of gun control etc but no thread for those who actually shoot their weapon.

I shoot at the range all the time, but I never feel the need to go hunting, because I like God's creatures and can buy food down the street. If a person doesn't hunt for food, then more likely they hunt because they're psychotic jerks who want to kill solely for the sake of killing something.

Ever shoot at your range?

That is one cool pic! Must be nice to have all that space with which to shoot wild game.

Just make sure you don't go hunting with Dick Cheney!

Just to be clear, this is a billboard advertising the Saskatoon restaurant in Greenville SC. A bit of a hike from the Saskatchewan city itself.

Sure, why not? Surer kills from farther away. That's what I use, a Remington 870 with 7½ shot for grouse, 4 or 6 shot for ducks, 2 or 4 magnum loads for geese, depending on how close I think I can get to them. It's illegal around here to use a rifle on migratory birds or water birds, and I don't think it's a good idea to shoot anything with a rifle unless you can see where the bullet's going to land. Birds on the wing, or sitting up in trees as grouse often do, are out. Safety first.
It's overkill. Around here we can almost walk up to grouse because they prefer to hunker down and pretend to not be there. Bonk with a rock. Headshot by .22 is good, too.
Might as well use a .600 Nitro Express or a .50 BMG to bring down an elk. :D

We have a 12 Ithaca Featherlite, full choke. Good for bigger birds. As I said, the grouse around here are such that you can almost walk up to them with a stick and brain them. (Their camo isn't that great and that's what they rely on rather than flight). .22 if we are lazy and don't want to get off the stump we are perched on. We have a friend who used to be able to run them down and catch them. He'd wring their necks on the spot.
Think I'll get my .577 T-rex and go get a whitetail.

I carry 15 rounds....fully load the rifle and I have a little soft folding 10 round bullet pouch (silent) on the belt.........

A good scope, properly zeroed, in the hands of someone that knows how to use a scoped rifle, greatly improves your chances of a good hit....full stop. Single sighting plane and all that. That means less chance of wounded game. Guys that think they shoot as well with iron sights as they do with a good scope are deluded. Or not properly trained.

I also have an ancient .30-30 Winchester 94 with standard buckhorn sights.....been meaning to get an aperture sight put on it.
I do head shots with the 30-30 or the 303. i missed once so far. It made a furrow through the hair of a mule deer. 2nd shot went in under the left ear. It dropped like a rock. I guess if your eyesight isn't great, a scope is handy, though. Good idea.

Grouse around here are a little more wary than that. On the ground, sure, a headshot with a .22 works well, but they're often roosting in trees and I won't fire a rifle into the air. I don't much like carrying both a .22 and a shotgun either, the shotgun's more versatile for grouse hunting so that's what I carry. Maybe I should try a slingshot. They're not real bright though. I've seen a bunch of them being picked out of a tree one at a time, and as long as you shoot them from the bottom up they won't fly away. Evolution in action: their usual predators can't surprise them up there, they think they're safe. If you shoot one of the higher ones and the others see it falling past them, then they'll figure out--maybe--that something's going on and take flight.

That's what I had the 410/22 for. the shotgun was good for some things. 12 is overkill. lol We used to have a 20 ga that was ok, too. Maybe Les sold that though, I haven't seen it for ages.

They are wild here......and why would I pay for 20 ga or .410 shells when 12 ga is sooooo cheap???
