No it is not, you follow the Popes (Catholic Church's) edicts or you are not a true Catholic (your something else). It is the churches version of Sharia law. All religions have it in some form or another. You can call yourself what ever you want, but it is not necessarily true. Member of the club obey the rules or your out.
I admit I don't know much about all the various cult rules but my understanding is that if you are baptized you are one of them unless you are specifically expelled. At least when they are doing a head count.

You should study a bit of American history and you would find out that in many areas to this day whites still consider anyone with even a drop of black blood as black even when the white part is from their own family.
Many? Correction, I think it is almost everyone in the United States. Jim Crow's principles of one drop are just as much reinforced by the "Afro-American" community, to the extent that most will overlook their white, first nation and other ancestry.
Someone like the light-complexioned and outspoken racist Jeremiah Wright would be identified as a white man in Western Africa and soon torn to pieces... (ah the irony)
