By definition it is the celebration of the birth of Christ, how people choose to celebrate it is a subordinate meaning. If I choose to sit around masturbating on Hallowe'en, that has nothing to do with the meaning of Halloewe'en.

It's not called Halloweeeener for nothing

Don't know about most, I think it depends which people are involved...

Fair enough, I should have said many and not most.

I think it, I say it. Well, type it anyway.

Was just a general comment anyway. Although I'm sure many of us have specific people in mind.

Now it's the Catholic's turn:

St Bernadette Christmas concert canned

TORONTO - Parents of students at a Catholic elementary school in Ajax claim they are being Scrooged out of their beloved annual Christmas concert.

St. Bernadette Catholic School has for the first time in years pulled the plug on its evening festive concert after teachers refused to give their time for the after-hours event, an exasperated parent told the Sun on Friday.

And when the school’s principal tried to talk them into doing the nighttime show – a performance that for years has been a holiday favourite among parents – teachers threatened to launch a union grievance, said Stan, who did not want to give his real name because his daughter attends St. Bernadette C.S.

“They’ve always had a nighttime (Christmas) concert so parents could see their kids perform,” he said. “But this is a teacher union thing. The teachers have decided they don’t want the concert at night anymore.”

Stan also expressed concern over St. Bernadette – a religious-based school – cancelling an event symbolizing the holiest of their holidays.

“This is a Catholic school. This is the home of Christmas.”

Why don't the parents volunteer to plan, prepare, and perform in concert with their children. I'm sure there are talented Catholic parents. Give the teachers a well-deserved Christmas gift. After all, “This is a Catholic school. This is the home of Christmas and Pope Alexander VI.”

Agreed.

If the parents want it, they can do it.

I am not going to get into the false or truthful philosophy but I have a few questions here about
society itself and how we intermingle as a multicultural group. Many as you know, know that
I am not afraid to criticize the Christian movement when they go too far but in this case I think
some understanding should come from the other side of the room.
For a hundred years we have had a Christmas concert, and that is what it was called. The fact
is the same message, is relayed by all the faiths, about peace love and compassion etc.
Its not like holding a Christmas concert is going to interfere with terrorist recruitment or anything.

Christians have been tolerant of other groups holding their parades, Muslims, Hindu's and even
the Santa Parade. We are constantly promoting understanding of each others beliefs and we go
to great lengths to do that with festivals and food and singing and dancing. So my question is, if
the western society is expected to be tolerant and understanding of other Canadians, when is it
the turn of the others? Or is it now a case of what we believe is OK and every thing else is of the
Devil?

I don't go to church and I don't subscribe to any particular faith, but if we are expected to integrate
into a true Canadian Society, Christmas should remain Christmas and the Indo Canadians should
celebrate Diwali, and so on. If we tried to learn more about each others customs perhaps we
would get along better and we could build a national identity. Instead we try to break down the
celebrations by taking the name plates off. Try that with the Muslim Holy Day Celebrations, there
would be hell to pay. Incidentally, I have friends in the Indo Canadian Community and may of
them think we are nuts getting rid of the name Christmas. They celebrate along with us because
apparently they have more respect for our celebrations than we do, they don't want to change
the name of anything.
The micro managing of holidays and celebrations can stop anytime as far as I am concerned

Simple solution to all of this:

1. Remove all statutory holidays and just give people more days off of their choice,

2. Introduce voucher schools, and

3. Give schools more autonomy.

These aren't solutions to what's being discussed in this thread. It's just your irrelevant program to reform education.

Better go to bed you have school in a few hours.

Actually its over now for December. University is nice. Though it somewhat annoys me that there is so much time off given tuition costs.

You know what? Those Christmas concerts are pure Hell and torture for both parents and students anyway.

Very true. I took part in several as a kid. Wasn't fun at all. My mother filmed one of them and she still occasionally complains that I didnt look happy enough.

To your first point- you don't have to stop learning because school's out.
To your second point - do you look grumpy too? To look sad and grumpy is a double curse
