I think it is for a lot of people. It may have initially began as a christian celebration but it is embraced by many more now.

Actually Christmas was a pagan holiday that got hijacked by christians. We celebrate winter solstice since that is when the days finally start getting longer again.

Yeah, yeah , yeah. I know. I've already been spanked for not being thorough, LOL.

See below. ;)

Actually it began as a pagan celebration which was commenderred by the Christians. Most of the stuff people commonly associate with Christmas (trees, wreaths, greenery) is pagan in origin. And Santa Claus I think was invented by the retail industry -- nothing Christian about him.

Yeah, I actually knew that but was posting on the fly. I knew someone would point it out though, lol.:)

What was the name of the holiday before it was called "Christmas"?

Oh, I guess I've thought wrong all these years, but until now I thought "Christmas" is a derivation from the name "Christ". Stupid old me...........jumping to conclusions.

Do you have Christmas lights up on your house?

Nope, going "green" but mostly saving on the power bill.

So you have before then? Well there's nothing Christ-like about coloured lights on your house. There's plenty associated with Christmas that has nothing to do with Christ.

Just like the Easter bunny has nothing to do with the Resurrection of Christ, or for that matter the gifts given to kids, the chocolates, the eggs.

I'm pretty sure everyone here knows the etymology of Christmas...you're not enlightening anyone with your smugness.

The fact is that many people celebrate Christmas without any religious commemorations of Christ. It's as much a secular holiday now as a celebration of the birth of Christ by Christians.

But but That's the end of the world in 2012.....;lol:

He is leading you astray. The end of the world is 2012/12/21 (winter solstice). A Friday too. We don't even get to enjoy the final weekend.

What was the name of the holiday before it was called "Christmas"?

Winter Solstice. I think it had a fancy smancy name but that was what was being celebrated.
