Never trust the government in any country to keep care of you in your old age.. if you don't prepare now.. you may have an ugly surprise at retirement time.
I own land, paid cash, building a home on it, cash.. no loans. It's mine, not the banks, just has low taxes as it a s small city.. Tired of financing big government, banks and speculators.. stopped taking loans for anything 4 years ago.. if I can't afford to pay cash.. I can't afford it. period.
Having a monthly payment outside DirecTV & Hydro is just to dam stressful for me, Thanks.
Now because I have worked in the USA and Canada.. if there is any Social Security or Old Age Pension left to get.. I will apply from one or the other, or both.
I did not trust the government, i prepared myself quite well, i had the same as you from many years of nose to the grindstone. A home on acreage paid for, no debts, then my wife was stricken with MS 8 years ago, it developed very rapidly and she could not work within a few months. A year later, after struggling for some time with back and leg problems i could no longer work either.
The next several years were a nightmare of blowing through our savings. Medical equipment and drugs are not cheap. I did not access welfare, it was not part of my makeup. Sell the life insurance and remortgage our home then try to get part time work that allowed for an old cripple who could not be away from home for more than a few hours as my wife needs close and ongoing support.
Her CPC disability is peanuts as she was home raising kids for many more years than she formally worked. I have CPC (early) and now OAP. Too much month left at the end of the money. Her family has money but they are fundamentalists and we are not so we are SOL. If what they believe in comes true they are hooped:roll:
We manage on our own so i do not not need to be told what i should have done but thanks anyway and no offense taken:smile:
And.......to stay on topic i still love Canada!
