Actually Trump is about 6 months older than Ronnie when he became President. Not that it means a hell of a lot............Ronnie went to 93.

He was utterly gaga ... a vegetable at the end. Now George Bush Senior is all there, something for Junior to aspire to.

It's doubtful. Mexico isn't much of a threat. I'd be more concerned with the drug cartels. The Mexican police have a rotten track record dealing with them. The drug lords get the upper hand more often than not.

WRT the US, Trump is getting more border police, but I don't expect the Federales to be marching across the border any time soon.

If the Mexicans fight back, the Americans immediately enter the history books as a "rogue nation". The Mexicans could probably put together a cracker of a military alliance (China? Iran? most of South America? Vietnam?) in a hurry, if they do choose as the Americans have LOTS of enemies out there. If America starts a war with a peaceful neighbour based on a whim, they might be seen as another NAZI Germany that has to be stopped. Fiction . Maybe.

Pissing off peaceful neighbours because they aren't white enough isn't the brightest move, at the least.

Honestly, it's a little over the top to suggest that Mexico would "fight back". It is evident that the Mexican government realizes its position in the world. The phone call by their president demonstrates to me that the Mexican government knows they cannot make too much fuss.

Canceling the meeting with Trump was their only option. It was a meek gesture, but was good for the Mexican citizens to see. I doubt that Trump or his officials gave it a second thought.

The Wall, the Voter Fraud, Torture, mass deportations all constitute the butt end of Trump's campaign rhetoric, the nonsense bin.

Wake up.

Maybe it will look like this.

Like a fence?

Yes, come up with a modern equivalent to what the feds did in the 1930s and forward. I'm thinking about their reducing the Mob's influence and jailing ringleaders like Capone.

People are always going to smoke, drink and do drugs. The government might as well make money from it.

I'm quite sure that the Liberal government has factored in profits when they finally get around to legalizing marijuana, Murph. Colorado seems to have done quite well off the taxes they collect on it.

It's too bad that someone couldn't come up with a legal way of making money from some of the drugs that police departments, RCMP, and Customs confiscate.

Let's see what happens. Trump has declared that he is going to extort billions from the Mexicans so that he can use the money to punish them. Heinrich Himmler would be proud. The Mexicans should fight back. About a third of the United States territory was billed off of Mexico and they do not love the United States.

Extort. Punish. Heinrich Himmler. I couldn't find anything that Trump said where he threatened any of that.

I guess I'm blaming the drug cartels when I should be praising their charity and good deeds. Illegal entry into the US is only illegal entry into the US if the Mexicans say it is.

I guess I don't understand legal stuff as much as I thought.

He's gonna MAKE them pay! ... for something that they don't want.

How do you define extortion?

I say good for the President of Mexico in calling Trump's bluff and canceling his meeting with the President next week in Washington.

WHY? It's Mexico that is pulling off most of the bullsh*t. How many Mexicans are in the U.S. illegally? How much crap is crossing the border north bound from Mexico. As far as torture goes, I'm mainly against it EXCEPT against Terrorists who are trying to kill you and in cases like Travis Vader who murdered two seniors in cold blood and that A$$hole in Calgary who allegedly murdered a 5 year old boy and his grand parents. Their ilk deserves no mercy whatsoever, same as suicide bombers- the epitome of cowardness! Trump is doing stuff that most everyone else is too limp wristed to do.

Five days into his mandate and Trump has come damned close to starting a war with his next door neighbour. Mexico is the US second biggest EXPORT Market. Most of those rust belt jobs went to Asia, not to Mexico. It's a race war, really.

Glad you clarified your beginning statement by adding the last, CC - much more sensible, possibly fake news but not as inflammatory or silly as the first.

"Mexico" isn't doing that. Some Mexicans are. We've had plenty of American born killers wandering around in Canada. We need a wall. Close the border to the barbarians!

"Fake news" is that all Mexicans are drug dealing rapists.

Though I agree that many see tariffs as a form of extortion, unfortunately for them they are legal.

Never thought of them, good addition to the list, CC.

Not until the United States formally withdraws from NAFTA (six months cooling period). Until then, his levy on Mexican imports is illegal.

Yes, he's going to make them pay because of the added expense, damage and illegal activities they brought into the US. The Mexicans must bear the cost of restitution.

Extortion is taking money by threat. Ex. I will beat you up unless you pay me $100000.

The US has every right to do what they're doing. It is illegal to enter the US without permission. It is illegal to bring banned or illicit substances into the US.

I guess someone has to paint you a picture.

Then I expect that the administration will wait until the cooling off period is over before they impose the tariffs.

Probably. Trump is a businessman after all.

What some people fail to grasp is that Mexicans will still be able to enter and travel in the US if they are on business or travel. iow, they have proper identification and present themselves to customs/border agencies. Any legislation enacted, or action taken would target law breakers.

They will have to but at the rate that things are progressing, the situation could be radically different by then. The Mexicans have some cards to play, too. They are the second biggest customer for American goods and services, after us and a lot of the American food supply comes from Mexico. The Americans will not pull this wall off without hurting themselves. The wall will take a decade and a half to build, will generate ill will that might last for generations and it won't stop a hamster, anyway. "Show me a thirty for wall and I will show you a thirty one foot high ladder."
