That said I don't think its right to be jailing some schmuck for growing weed or selling a dime bag. Legalize pot and tax it. You then remove $100 million in court costs, another $100 million in prison costs, free up a bunch of jail cells, and increase govt revenue by $1 billion or so.

I agree on the pot issue.

Doesn't make the bank bail-out any better. That will be up to $500 billion since 2007 by the end of this year and for what...so they can keep foreclosing on those who lost their jobs thanks to the finacial crisis caused by...the banks. What a great plan.

Hmmmm Canada is leading the way in recovery. Canada's banks are nothing like US lenders who let anyone and everyone have a house.

So this is just showboating to use as fodder for an election as opposed to
standing on platforms of promised policy. The Conservatives still ran the
longest minority government in Canadian history, didn't they? I phrase this
as a question, as my statements & predictions aren't running so hot on this
topic (& specifically this Thread) so far to date...

I'm offering out winning Lotto numbers, by request (for a nominal fee) here
also if anyone is interested. They might have been winning numbers in 2009,
but they're winners. I swear!

Why bother, bones heal and chicks dig scars, if we don't patch em up they might stop fighting and if we happen to lose a few lifers you have more cells available and save a ton of dough.

Our population is about 11% of the US, bailout money in Canada is about 11% of the US, foreclosure rate is about 11% of the US...do you see a trend here? Our lending was not so closlely tied to the stock market as theirs which has allowed for a slightly better rate of recovery.

I know you and the other cons like to blow off the government being in contempt but not me. It is the first time in histroy of any parlimentary democracy by a seasoned speaker.

This government does not deserve a vote of confidence and does not need the opposition to scamper away to fight on a day when the story has been buried. You presume the outcome so let's just consult you when or when not to have an election.

You said earlier that you supported stimulous spending well consider this another 300 million dollar boast to the econmoy for democracy.

Is this a political mistake by the opposition, perhaps, but I don't like politics.

It's the right thing to do and the right time.

It's in the hands of the people now, where it should be.

Tories on brink of majority as election called.

The Harper Conservatives are at the threshold of a majority government as the country plunges into the fourth election campaign in seven years, according to an exclusive Toronto Star/La Presse poll.

The Angus Reid poll shows that the majority will most likely be won or lost in Ontario with a particularly pitched battle in the 905 belt around Toronto, where the Conservative have worked overtime on the reeling in the ethnic vote.

That's just too bad for you. The whole idea of democracy is people can vote however they please whether it is based on reasonable thought process or not. If someone wants to vote Liberal just because they like the letter 'L' then they can and you saying they can't is not democratic at all.

We can always hope people make an informed decision but taking away a voter's rights for any reason is a slippery slope I don't want to go down.

I do not see him/her wanting to take away a voter's rights for any reason. However, wouldn’t you think that anyone who is going to vote (be it federal, provincial/municipal) should check out party policies/candidates views/opinions.. etc…. To at least get some information, rather than, as someone said, for example, voting liberal because they like the letter ‘L’…?
And maybe, just because you don't like the 'leader' of a party, doesn't mean you shouldn't/can't vote for the candidate for that party in your home riding.

The present system is unworkable - period.

It was designed over 100 years ago for a totally different country.

Today, we have the technology where every voter should be able to vote individually for every single Bill - and if less then 50% of a riding vote for a particular Bill, THEN the MP would vote on their behalf.

The present system invites secrecy, corruption and bi-partisanship and it probably always will.

It's time Canadians (and all world citizens) took far more responsibility in politics.

Choosing our own direction is never a bad idea regardless of how many elections it takes. Now we can hear the politicians talk and respond to issues like Contempt of Parliament, Government secrecy and this new war machine the Neocons want to build. Not to mention prisons for Cannabis growers, Health Care, and the growing debt under Harper's government.

Now I know that some of you are very very concerned about what this election will do to the Liberal party. All I can say is fear not, as it either is a good trial by fire for Ignatieff or the catalyst to change the leadership of the party so it's a win win situation for the party.
