Liberal backbenchers who tried to stage a coup against Justin Trudeau’s leadership have been demanding a clear plan on how to stop the party’s collapse in the polls and prevent Pierre Poilievre’s ascension to government. It is something they’ve been clamouring for since the Liberals lost two byelections and the NDP tore up the confidence agreement it had with the party. And now we know what that plan looks like.
Speaking to reporters after a caucus meeting Wednesday, backbench MP Adam van Koeverden showed that Liberal party messaging was indeed heading towards the absurd.

“What I am focused on is beating Pierre Poilievre in the next federal election,” he said, reiterating a common deflection, before, adding, “He poses an existential threat to Canada’s democracy in my view.”

Come again?

Unfortunately, no. The tone has gone beyond simple Liberal self-righteousness, and into the realm of alternate reality, even by the standards of this chronically truth-allergic government.

What evidence would there be that Poilievre “poses an existential threat” to democracy? Koeverden didn’t offer any. Liberals are so desperate to be Americans that they are borrowing language directly from the U.S. Democratic party about Donald Trump.

Now, such language might make sense south of the border, as Trump did try to overturn an election he clearly lost, and his supporters rioted at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

But against Poilievre? What evidence is there? That he wants to cut taxes and get inflation under control? What a Rat-Bastard.

The Liberals have tried for months to tie Poilievre to Trump, or to imply he is some sort of dictator in waiting, but rarely have they so directly said he will overturn democracy.

It is a complete fabrication, but one that plays into the Liberal belief that any vote for a different party is by nature undemocratic. They are what economist Thomas Sowell calls the “annointed,” or as the National Review put it, “promoters of a worldview concocted out of fantasy impervious to any real-world considerations.”

Liberals, and progressives more generally, can’t seem to fathom that there would be people out there who think differently.

Koeverden’s comment expressing a fantasy about standing against fascism was merely among the latest examples of what is clearly how the Liberals think they can chip away at Poilievre’s support.

The day before, Mental Health and Addictions Minister Ya’ara Saks posted on X, that: “Without a doubt the Leader of the Conservatives will use the Notwithstanding Clause to take away women’s reproductive rights.” ??? Based upon???

Pardon? “Without a doubt” Polievre would “take away” “reproductive rights” using the notwithstanding clause? Again, there is no evidence for this. Poilievre has said his government would not bring legislation restricting abortion, and he certainly hasn’t said he’d use the notwithstanding clause to do something he already doesn’t want to.

If Saks has information the rest of us don’t, she should release it. But, of course, like Koeverden, she is just making it up.

She did include in her post that Poilievre has “voted to restrict women’s abortion rights time and time again,” but she did not explain exactly what those times were or what legislation she is referring to.

Usually, when those in favour of unrestricted access to abortion claim that Conservatives will take away those rights, the only evidence supporting their claims is that Poilievre voted for legislation that acknowledged that pregnant women were in fact pregnant. One private member’s bill would have ensured that knowingly assaulting a pregnant woman would be “considered aggravating circumstances for sentencing purposes.” Poilievre also voted for a bill that would make it a crime to cause “the death of an unborn child while committing an offence” against a pregnant woman.

Twisting proposed legislation like this to suggest support for it means support for restricting abortion is not based in truth. Perhaps there is a bill I’ve missed from the past 20 years, but if there is, the Liberals are free to remind us about it.

In any case, a government wouldn’t even need to use the notwithstanding clause to regulate abortion. When the previous abortion law was struck down, the Supreme Court did not rule that no abortion law would be constitutional, only that the specific law in front of it was. In fact, the court acknowledged that legislating protections for the fetus was an entirely appropriate role for the House of Commons.

But facts, history and logic, do not matter in politics, especially among Liberals.

This elevated attack on the Conservatives comes after the government began embracing conspiracy theories being spread online from Trudeau supporters, which claim, without evidence, that the reason that Poilievre has not received a security clearance to be briefed about foreign interference is because he would not be able to pass? Seriously…I‘be seen it here.

While there is nothing to back up this claim, it is being peddled daily by Liberal MPs. For example, MP Ryan Turnbull said in the House, Thursday: “You know what else is spooky is that the Conservative leader refuses to get his security clearance to protect Canadians against foreign interference. I can only speculate, he must be concerned about the ghosts in his closet.”

The Conservative lead in the polls has been as high as 20 points in recent weeks, and without assured support from the NDP, it is possible there could be an election soon.

Panic has set it and whatever principles Liberals had left have been tossed out.

Trudeau has given every indication that he intends to soldier on. Most importantly: Trudeau hopes to dispel this rebellion by rallying his troops behind some hare-brained wedge attacks against Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party. If he can focus his MPs on the opposition, then they might cut him some slack.

So Trudeau has gone back to the well and rediscovered some old attacks over abortion. According to Trudeau, the Conservatives continue to harbour a secret agenda to ban abortion which they’ll put into action once they are in government.

Never mind that the Conservative Party was in government from 2006 to 2015, including four years with a majority government. If they were ever going to legislate on abortion, that might have been the time. But they didn’t.

Maybe their hidden agenda is so well hidden that even the Conservatives aren’t aware of it.

Trudeau is not so easily convinced. Instead, the government has, out of thin air, announced it will crack down on charities that offer pregnancy counselling. The argument for doing is that they do not offer abortions?

It’s not an easy argument to follow.

The truth is crisis pregnancy centres are remarkable charities that provide much-needed support to low-income pregnant women, including blankets, baby formula, and other supplies. That support also often includes counselling on making healthy decisions during pregnancy and what to expect once the baby arrives.

It’s likely that either you or someone you know accessed help provided by one of these centres and the amazing volunteers that staff them.

But instead of thanking them, the Trudeau government is threatening to claw back the centres’ charitable status if they don’t disclose that they don’t provide abortion. The suggestion is these centres are staffed by sneaky volunteers intent on hood-winking pregnant women into not getting abortions.

It’s bizarre.

Well, not really. In fact, it’s calculated to stir up concern over a settled issue to distract attention from the rebellion against Trudeau. The PM is just barely clinging to power and is grasping for a wedge issue to rally his base and distract attention from his leadership. It’s cynical.
1730552259223.jpeg
Trudeau has also attacked Poilievre for refusing to get clearance to receive confidential briefings on, among other issues, foreign interference in Canadian elections.
1730552303921.png
It’s not entirely clear why someone who is not in the government would need to receive such briefings. Poilievre’s argument is that getting clearance would obligate him to refrain from speaking on confidential topics, making it hard for him to attack and hold the government accountable.

Whether you find Poilievre’s explanation convincing, the Liberals have dredged up conspiracy theories originating online that darkly surmise that Poilievre has something scandalous to hide which might be uncovered in the review that leads to confidential briefings.
Nowadays, all public figures are subject to scrutiny from anonymous online basement warriors who are happy to stoke baseless conspiracy theories. But to have the government embrace and turn them into a major part of their communication strategy is virtually unheard of.

Will any of this rigmarole distract the Liberal rebels and refocus their attention on their opponents? I doubt it but who knows?

What I do know is it’s startling to see the depths to which Trudeau has sunk to save his own political skin. Liberals who are hoping for the party to survive past its current leader might want to take note.

Poilievre does have a secret weapon quietly tucked away. Several million shiny new immigrants that Trudeau brought in who are Pro-Life.

The Liberals had a solid majority in 2015 and May as well have one still what with NDP support . Funny how they being so pro abortion cannot codify it into law .

It's the same old scaremongering by Liberals and NDPers, who have nowhere to go but down in the next election.
I'd like to see the handgun ban dumped, but I'm doubtful.
I guess it's hand-to-hand combat for this old soldier.

Might as well be focused on the next election because their ability to govern during this current term has failed completely due to more overlapping Liberal scandals like “The Other Randy” & the “Green Slush Fund” which are burying their other scandals towards the back pages.

But maybe Randy was talk’n ’bout the “other” Randy when this was claimed?:
“Global Health is a wholly owned Indigenous and LGBTQ Company,” Boissonnault’s former business partner, Stephen Anderson, specified in a June 2020 bid by Global Health Imports Corporation (GHI) for a contract to supply face masks. National Post obtained the bid through an access-to-information request.

Neither Boissonnault nor Anderson answered National Post’s questions about which First Nations, Métis or Inuit groups they belonged to.

GHI eventually landed a federal contract to supply disposable gloves to Elections Canada in January 2024. It is not identified as Indigenous-owned in that contract.

When Anderson submitted the bids in June 2020, he and Boissonnault were communicating several times per day, they both have said. This continued until Boissonnault won back his Edmonton Centre seat in the September 2021 federal election.

The new information about GHI’s bids coincides with parliamentary hearings examining federal procurement from Indigenous suppliers through a program called the Procurement Strategy for Indigenous Business (PSIB). The inquiry launched after a Global News report described methods that non-Indigenous businesses allegedly use to access the PSIB, etc…

Shannin Metatawabin, CEO of the National Aboriginal Capital Corporations Association (NACCA), an advocacy organization representing Indigenous financial institutions, said the questions about GHI are symptomatic of the PSIB’s problems.

“There needs to be an inquiry,” he said, into GHI’s bids and any similar cases.😳

Boissonnault appears to have made contradictory statements about his heritage over the years….but what about “other” Randy?
1731003957611.jpeg(Since Boissonnault and Anderson split the company ownership 50-50, both would have to be Indigenous for GHI to meet the program’s criteria)

Boissonnault has distanced himself from GHI over the last few months, telling the parliamentary ethics committee recently that he had “surrendered” his GHI shares. The committee has been investigating texts leaked to reporters that show Anderson referring to business communications with someone at GHI named “Randy” after Boissonnault was appointed to cabinet and was required by law to no longer be involved in the business.

Anderson has also admitted he lied to a reporter about the identity of the second “Randy,” although he has still refused to publicly identify who the other “Randy” is.
1731004220896.jpeg
Boissonnault says it is not him.
Come in through a window, leave through the basement floor drain.
Like “Other” Randy…sort of Ninja-like.
