It’s Remembrance Day. But not for everyone. The Greater Essex County District School Board in Ontario circulated an e-mail to the 75 schools it runs in places like Windsor and Leamington. The memo says teachers should be preparedto exempt Muslim students from Remembrance Day.

“Some families may be reluctant to have their children attend your location municipality’s ceremonies. Please note that meaningful alternate activities should be provided at the schools for those families who do not wish their children to participate in any Remembrance Day ceremonies.”

In case you were wondering which families they might be referring to, the school board didn't say specifically but pointed teachers to two Muslim-themed websites, including the story about the first Muslim soldier in the Canadian Forces who wore a hijab, an Islamic head covering.

But Remembrance Day is a central part of Canada. It remembers our history, and the men and women who fought and died to keep us free. It is not a dark day, an embarrassing day, a racist day or a day of shame.

It is a day of remembering why we are free, and what we stand for, and who sacrificed to make us this way.

It’s not a religious day, like Christmas. It’s a day for everyone.

It’s a disgrace that any family would object to it – especially an immigrant family who came here to benefit from our country. It would call into question the basis on which they applied for and were granted citizenship.

And even if some old bigot from a backwoods village in Pakistan or Somalia doesn’t want to respect Canada, that’s where our schools come in and teach those bigots’ kids and grandkids what it means to be Canadian.

It’s insulting that either parents or the school board thinks Remembrance Day is in any way anti-Muslim. Canada fought in the Boer War against Afrikaaners, the First World War against Germans, the Second World War against Germans and Italians and Japanese. We fought against North Korea. What on earth could possibly be objectionable to a Muslim family about any of that?

Could you imagine if a German or Japanese family objected? The obvious question would be: Do you think Hitler or Mussolini or Hirohito were right? That’s the implication of Muslim families objecting to Remembrance Day -- that we were wrong.

Or maybe it’s that we are wrong today. Because if you look at all the recent wars and military missions Canada has done, it’s all been in Muslim lands.

To protect Muslims in Kosovo. To protect Muslims in Kuwait. To protect Muslims in Afghanistan, especially Muslim girls who weren’t even allowed to go to school. To stop the Islamic State terrorists from butchering everyone around them.

One hundred and fifty-eight Canadians died trying to liberate the hellhole of Afghanistan from the Taliban.

If I were a Muslim immigrant, I would sing O Canada extra loud. I wouldn’t just wear a poppy. I’d be out on the street selling them. I would be thanking Allah that such a generous and open and loving and giving country as Canada not only tried to fix their failed states, but has let in close to a million Muslims, half since 9/11.

What kind of school board sends around a memo allowing children to be exempt from Remembrance Day ceremonies, just weeks after terrorist murders of two Canadian Forces soldiers, including one standing guard at the war memorial?

I’ve started a petition to the school board. I chose the website’s name carefully: www.LoveItOrLeave.ca.

Locutus, was it the author of the article that started the website or was it you?

Regardless, I am getting tired of these exemptions. This has nothing to do with religion, it is a part of Canada's history. I do think if they don't want to participate in it, then get the **** out of our country. They certainly don't respect it, so why should we respect them?

I can't imagine the phrase "Lest We Forget" anymore without some sarcastic, cynical tone about leaving a generation of people behind, despite our futile attempts to encourage others to remember them.

Absolutely disgusting. It seems to me that we're encouraging people not to assimilate - to become their own "enclaves". What a great way to destroy a country. What the hell do they think is happening in the Middle East and African etc. Tribal conflicts! Is that what we want here? Essex County people should be ashamed of themselves. How stupid and completely ignorant. This is Political Correctness gone crazy!

We allow people like this to come and live among us. It was our parents and grandparents
generation that went to fight to make this country what it is. Immigrants want the advantage
they secured and mock those who made the sacrifice. The school should be held to
ridicule here as well. This is not a religious day its a day of respect.
The Immigration questions should center on these types of celebrations as well.
Questions like do you approve of Remembrance Day and explain what it means
Do you approve of an open democracy where people can express themselves
Do you approve of.............well you get the idea here.

If the answers are NO they are not suitable for fitting into our society and should be denied entry.

And before some get into a flap I am not picking on Muslims alone. There are Muslims out there
who will be at the cenotaph like everyone else. I am talking about people who come from the
Middle East, Europe, America Asia or anywhere else. If you don't approve of our celebrations and
days respect then you should not come here period.
I don't mind accommodating some understanding but dammit this is Canada and when you come
here at least respect the nation and its special days if you can't why would you want to live here?

The Canadian Multiculturalism Act is a law, passed in 1988, under Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau.

Justine Trudeau does not fall far from that tree... think what Canada will become under this scourge.

Factual backgrounder on the Greater Essex County Remembrance Day memo

I have had a number of people ask me about the facts of the Greater Essex County District School board, and their memo about exempting students from Remembrance Day.

For those who are curious, here’s the provenance of that story:

-Someone who received an e-mailed memo from the school board forwarded it to me as a potential news item.-We sent the school board the entire e-mail memo we had received, in exactly the form we received it, along with a number of questions about it. -The school board’s spokesman, Scott Scantlebury, referred to their religious accommodation policy.

-At no point did Scantlebury mention anything about security concerns of parents. Scantlebury seems to have provided a different response to CBC.

-The memo we received only singles out one religion (in the links).

-That memo we received did not include the links to aboriginal, Asian, and African soldiers in the Canadian military. Scantlebury did not advise us of this fact. The quotes we cited from the memo are accurate.-I have attached my producer’s email exchanges yesterday with Scantlebury. I have only redacted the producer’s name and contact info.

RT @SunNewsNetwork "The Essex County School Board has apologized for a 'miscommunication' http://ow.ly/E8HpF " #CdnPoli #roft

On Monday, November 10, Sun News Network received information from the Essex County School Board regarding students opting out of Remembrance Day ceremonies.

The email from Scott Scantlebury explained that opt-outs would be provided based on "religious accommodations."

On November 11, Sun Media columnist Ezra Levant published an op-ed criticizing the school board for allowing students to opt out of Remembrance Day ceremonies for religious reasons.

Later the same day, the Essex County School Board appeared to change their story, now saying that students are not opting out based on religious accommodation, but rather for "safety concerns" following the attacks in Ottawa and Montreal last month.

The following conversation took place at 3:45p.m. ET Tuesday between Sun News Network host Jerry Agar and Sharon Pyke, Superintendent of Education for the Essex Country School Board, who apologized for the "miscommunication."
