I see there are quite a few responses already. Seems he's held in higher esteem than at least one poster on here seems to think.

Of course, he was well liked.

Most people do have the good grace to be respectful of the deceased.

Oh and another explanation for why Harper chose to give Layton a state funeral might also have something to do with this:

During the last election, many polls showed most Canadians believed the Conservatives were the best party to choose from, but when it came to who Canadians trusted more and felt was a better leader, depending on the poll you read, Layton was either tied with Harper, or surpassed him.....

Many Canadians felt he would have been a great Prime Minister.... except the majority of Canadians felt he was leading the wrong party.

Personally I felt he would have been the best Prime Minister we could have had in a long time, and I also felt the NDP had Canadian's best interests at heart, but I understand many others had issues with the NDP and their policies..... but many... many more Canadians trusted and liked Layton.

Because of this and because he was right up there with Harper when it came to who Canadians trusted and/or liked more.... Harper probably saw that he was important to a lot of people and thus, Harper chose a State Funeral and showed some class..... and good on em for it.

All sitting MPs get State funerals. It was no big heart moving jesture by the PM. It's protocol.

"All sitting MPs get State funerals." "It was no big heart moving jesture by the PM. It's protocol."
Jack Layton was still 'technically' a 'sitting' M.P...... "sitting members of the Ministry and other prominant Canadians.....
Jack . So he was entitled..... Stephen Harper did ask Olivia Chow (Jack Layton's wife) if she agreed to the state funeral).

First time I ever had tears when hearing oh Canada before.
Watching the funeral right now

One thing that I noted thru the ceremonies on the Hill and Toronto was I did not see the Military represented. Possibly I missed this as I did not see everything.

And for those that believe, yes Jack is watching.

I usually find Hallelujah is an extremely overused, over covered song but must admit I quite liked Steven Page's rendition of it. The song fit the occasion.

Also loved Stephen Lewis's eulogy. Particularly when he got political. You could see the Conservative cabinet ministers getting a little nervous or uncomfortable. Harper himself handled it very well and was great.

It was a fitting send off, music and all that,I wish all funerals were like that,a celebration of life.

Agreed. Young as I may be, I made my arrangements a few years ago. You're never too young to die, unfortunately. No depressing stuff for me. A celebration and hopefully a party.

My best friend and niegbour passed away from liver cancer a couple years ago,for his wake we all gathered in his house, everyone with their guitars and played a tape of my bud strumming the 12 string, everyone joined in on their guitars and the piano and it was an awesome thing. We all had a good time, that's what he would have wanted.
