Actually Jack might have reached the top of the trade as it were and it was time to have someone
else carry the ball to the finish line. No one knows what the future holds, but I think his final and
touching message will keep alive the dream that this country can be a better place, not as a socialist
or conservative place but a nation built on compromise and respect. Wouldn't that be a pleasant
change instead of the steady diet of nonsense we have been subjected to for the last several years.

"To my fellow Quebecers: On May 2nd, you made an historic decision."

Ha, just kidding...

His sympathy for Canada's youth is a testament to the upcoming sacrifice we will need to make..

"There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you."

Yep, and I think the most pressing thing is re establishing law and order. We have to take a hard line with the gangs, the drugs and the violence perpetrated by teenagers. All these things are part of the "Tail wagging the dog" syndrome, that is bringing down this country!

I think regarding that issue, there should be a bit more investment in local enforcement rather than federal penitentiaries.

One thing about Jack was he cared for the people that society has at the bottom of the scale - Homeless, Mentally Ill, Old and young, working poor and others in similar situation - and he spoke from the heart and you knew he meant it. How we these people is shameful for a country as rich as Canada. Utterly shameful

so sad, I've always been a huge supporter of Jack Layton and the NDP Party. I'm hoping I can make his funeral on Saturday at Roy Thomson Hall.. RIP.

Yep, to some degree, of course the answer I'd like to see is to be able to change the thinking of people who cause all these problems. I'll bet most of them aren't happy people. We need tougher judges, more than more laws. Most of the laws are already in place, but one of the big problems is judges failing to impose the maximum sentence where it is required. I'm not big on Federal penitentiaries BUT for dangerous and violent offenders, I don't see an alternative. Of course one problem we are seeing more and more of is corruption & brutality among the cops themselves. Maybe one thing that would help is more people volunteering an hour or two a week for patrolling the streets themselves, I'm just not sure how organized an initiative like that is at the present time.

I'll give you 75% on that one! The trick is being able to sort out the ones who NEED help from the ones who WANT help, in other words need a "hand up" more so than a "hand out".

Oh, maybe that is where the "silver lining" comes in.
Yep, that's how I see it !!

After giving it some thought, I guess I'm not in favor of Jack getting a State Funeral.
Just because he died of cancer and at this time was at his height in popularity, to me this hardly qualifies for such a high honor as a state funeral.

I'm of a slightly different opinion, first there are exceptions to every rule and second if it does no harm, why not? Many people accomplish a lot of good without having titles or papers.

All sitting MPs get State funerals. It was no big heart moving jesture by the PM. It's protocol.

Sitting MP's, I don't think this is correct..

Because a state funeral should have credibility, if you provide to everyone, wheater they did anything significant or not, renders it meaningless .

Main article: State funerals in Canada
In Canada, state funerals are public events held to commemorate the memory of present and former governors general, present and former prime ministers, sitting members of the Ministry and other prominant Canadians at the discretion of the Prime Minister[1]. With ceremonial, military, and religious elements incorporated, state funerals are offered and executed by the Government of Canada which provides a dignified manner for the Canadian people to mourn a national public figure.

I think you've just shot down your own argument. General consensus is that Jack did A LOT that was significant. Hence that should enhance the credibility!

See, as I noted..
Jack is only getting a state funeral because of the discreatin of the PM. I disagree that with the PM, he should not have a state funeral. I wouldn't give him one!!

This is the emotional consensus now, everybody just being nice.
An objective review of his accomplishments tells a different story.

One problem, you ain't the PM -

2nd - It shows class & respect.

3rd - He worked hard for people, regardless of his politics, which a large part i disagree with.A State Funereal is appropriate.

Thus endeth the lesson on manners.
