I see there are quite a few responses already. Seems he's held in higher esteem than at least one poster on here seems to think.
All sitting MPs get State funerals. It was no big heart moving jesture by the PM. It's protocol.

Jack Layton was still 'technically' a 'sitting' M.P...... "sitting members of the Ministry and other prominant Canadians.....
Jack . So he was entitled..... Stephen Harper did ask Olivia Chow (Jack Layton's wife) if she agreed to the state funeral).
First time I ever had tears when hearing oh Canada before.
Watching the funeral right now
I saw the interview with the inter rim bloc leader and Duceppe ,,, all had praise for the man .
Yes and she hel her grandchild while she was sleepingWas Jack's first wife at the service?
I usually find Hallelujah is an extremely overused, over covered song but must admit I quite liked Steven Page's rendition of it. The song fit the occasion.
Also loved Stephen Lewis's eulogy. Particularly when he got political. You could see the Conservative cabinet ministers getting a little nervous or uncomfortable. Harper himself handled it very well and was great.
It was a fitting send off, music and all that,I wish all funerals were like that,a celebration of life.
