Just fer shitzngiggles I checked last year's taxes. I make six figures and paid about ten percent. Paid less than that when I was doing lots of home reno work
AFTER all our homeless are housed and have jobs and all our indigenous obtain a decent standard of living, but our first order of business should be to close the gaps!
Those 'gaps' have been with us since we first set foot on the continent. They will still be there when you and I are pushing up daisies.

Sadly the Hog enjoys giving idiot advice to desperate people- I think I have seen his crap before- advising people with no construction experience to become well paid plumbers by watching Youtube videos! Preferably with a trailer hitch 'cause you're going to need it for the trailer you later buy. Haul scrap metal to the yard. learn every trick of the trade... copper wires... copper cores in pool heaters and air conditioners... etc.
I say the guy is not just a fool- he is dangerous to our sanity! Find a job he says- in Durham Region where General Motors and all its spin off business is DEAD unless LIE-berals exempt them from their Carbon crap and trade garbage! And LIE-berals WILL NOT offer such exemptions- if they do it for one then they MUST do it for all! And LIE-beral;s are deep into “kill Nafta” mode as Our idiot Boy Justin ignores Yankee fears re- those tens of thousands of illegals flooding into Canada- Yankees do not want to import Muslim terror along with their dairy and softwood lumber! So Nafta is probably on the way out due to LIE-beral stupidity- and |GM will be one of many to take a HIT!
Hog says “bank your money” and ignores the 50 percent of young people crippled by college debt and now back living with parents because they HAVE NO MONEY!
Hog says “buy a mini van for $1000.00" and Hog is clearly blind to the reality that the ONLY VANS available for a grand are ones being sold- FOR PARTS! For a grand you get something with a blown engine or a possibly repairable transmission that is laying on the ground where it landed UNDER the vehicle! For a grand you WILL NOT be taking the machine for a drive clean test and will be lucky if it even starts fairly regularly on warm sunny days and thus guy will be always on the watch- ready to duck into a side street so a cop will not ticket him for driving an unsafe and non drive clean tested and not insured vehicle! And auto insurance is a unaffordable LUXURY for that one grand vehicle on scrap metal collecting income!
Up till about 10 years ago- cops used to run a blitz once a year to get problem drivers and vehicles off the road. They would let it be known in the newspapers in Durham Region that they would be checking vehicles coming off 401 in Whitby- looking for insurance papers, valid licence, proper emission test result reports and etc! In spite of this advance warning, 25 percent of the cars and drivers pulled over had legal troubles of one sort or another! And this was YEARS BEFORE the 2008 mortgage melt down! In those “better days” before LIE-berals gouged us on electricity and so much more, the number of drivers on Region roads that had trouble with their paperwork and driving illegally was over thirty five percent!
Hog says “ haul copper scrap to the yard” - and- what a MAROON! The last guy I saw hauling a big load of copper wire to the scrap yard had broken into a Hydro substation and removed several hundred pounds of copper trimmings and left overs. Its called THEFT and only a person who owns nothing and does not mind some jail time will indulge in such economic activity! Hog has NO IDEA how many people are already chasing this stuff!
Such a “job” is starvation wages at best with a SHORT CAREER as the van is OLD to begin with and guy WILL NOT be earning enough money to do any repairs! One fine day it will DIE and IT will be the last item sold to the scrap yard- towed in by suddenly out of business entrepreneur! Assuming cops do not shut him down for that pesky lack of licence, valid drive clean and insurance!
And there is an added bonus in this Hog crap that just keeps on TAKING! There are so many people going through our trash that govt is trying to find ways to shut the trade down! It is already illegal to take aluminum cans and bottles with deposits on them out of blue boxes! Not that it stops desperate people from denying blue box Hogs of their deposits! Just this morning I heard a crash and looked out to see a guy with a bicycle picking himself up after wiping out after the dozen shopping bags full of cans tripped up his bike! Bruised and battered, covered in filth, soaking wet but determined- he went on rooting through likely looking trash cans in a light rain!
But govt wants ALL the scrap for themselves! Yes- they are trying to discourage people from putting out old water heaters and aluminum eaves troughs and bits of copper wire from renovations out on the curb- free to be hauled away by any finder who wants it! Hogs want to find a way to stop people from leaving metal at the curb- free for anybody to pick up and take away!
The public generally figures govt is crazy to try to stop such a trade. Govt wants us to phone the city and have two city Hogs in a 5 ton truck come around to pick up our metal at a cost of a couple hundred dollars per hour for truck and men! But the public figures it is more cost effective just putting stuff at the curb and letting private citizens- who usually need the money- come around on their own time with the truck THEY PAY FOR and collect that scrap! The public is ALREADY angry enough about “ eco fees” that they see as just another tax gouge! The public is disgusted with the govt greed for pennies from scrap- AND for their efforts to create more useless Hog jobs that could be done WAY cheaper by private sector!
And those people who make something like a living collecting scrap? Its like becoming a Hog- or joining the Mafia- you cannot get there UNLESS YOU ARE CONNECTED!

Recently a very frustrated and dead broke Cdn university student sought advice online this forum and several geriatric hippies threw in their two cents-and that is OVER pricing their advice! The kid got a lot of noise about being bold and independent and being off the grid and living in a house he has built himself! The old farts giving this advice NEED to put away the weed-you guys are in danger of losing sight of reality in that cloud of smoke!
First, the kid is very likely your modern urban specimen and has never driven a nail in his life. Never poured concrete. Never patched a roof or laid shingles. Never soldered a pipe. And you out of touch old fools are encouraging the kid to go out and build A HOUSE? AND MAKE A PROFIT SELLING IT? With NO hard questions about quality control?
Certainly it IS possible to GET such skills with practice and determination.....but you DID hear the kid say he was BROKE.....RIGHT? The number and range of problems facing this kid; thanks to our tax happy Lie-beral govt and its unholy alliance with civil service Working Family Hogs is HUGE!
How will the kid get to a rural property to BUILD his house? WITHOUT A CAR? The days when you could pick up a $50.00 dollar car and drive it for 6-12 months and leave it at the side of the road and go get another ARE GONE! Drive Clean killed that game! And the latest safety certificate requirements buried the corpse. Along with the cost of insurance and idiot taxes that govt has happily `helped` us with! Oh, and we can add gridlock to that mix thanks to the Lie-beral mandated `war on cars`!
And the kid is broke so how will he qualify for a loan for either car or property if he has no collateral or down payment? But there are private lenders-I can hear the hippies whine. Oh sure, but maybe you should first read the McLeans Magazine piece on the rise of predatory mortgage lenders and then ask yourself: just HOW will the kid improve his life by getting involved with loan sharks using fancy new job titles for their age old thievery?
And any decent lender who looks at the kid will IMMEDIATELY find out about his OSAP loans and kid WILL be told: come back in 5-10 YEARS- AFTER you have dealt with your current debt and MAYBE we might loan you something? Of course banks have EXTRA stringent loan requirements for ultra cheap rural properties because they are so hard to unload onto somebody else if the kid defaults so even with no debt the kid is unlikely to qualify for a loan on rural property since he lacks the vehicle to gain access to the property!
Used to be you could buy rural property and put a trailer on it and live in the trailer till the house was built. NO LONGER LEGAL....anywhere within about TWO OR THREE HUNDRED MILES of Toronto! Govt does not want to bother refereeing dead broke trailer trash struggling to build a complicated modern structure with inadequate skills and limited financing...and getting into major trouble and cutting corners on quality control, and maybe screwing up structural elements and generally playing fast and loose with building codes to save a buck!
And they don’t want you shitting in the woods and having it run off into lakes with EXPENSIVE recreational cash cow homes along the shore because you cannot afford a fully functioning septic system! And they don’t want you mowing down thousands of trees and maybe having one fall on you as you cut firewood while trying to keep warm-after all those trees are a carbon sink helping save our environment so they must not be cut-unless govt gets good royalties from lumber companies and of course govt definitely doesn’t want you installing your own wood stove cause then they may have to come put out the fire at what is left of your half built house! So they (banks and municipalities) DISCOURAGE amateur builders at every turn! EVEN IF do they have a modest down payment!
So you CANNOT live on the property UNTIL the house is substantially finished! And they KNOW you are there thanks to the building permit you filled out and the electricity contract you signed so no faking it and living out back in the bushes some place! In a lot of rural areas they turn off the hydro for 6 months each year to discourage amateur builders! And they often do NOT snow plow the roads in front of such lots either!
As I said before, govt is TAX HAPPY....and dead broke and they don’t want small houses built by dead broke amateurs cause they cannot gouge such places for major property taxes so you now MUST build a house of minimum 1800 square feet (NOT including the basement) in most areas of southern Ontari-owe! None of that old guy building an affordable little cabin thing and expanding some day in the future! ALL or NOTHING....and you did hear the kid say he has no money anyway thanks to the minimum wage jobs that are all that are available to most young people these days ....RIGHT!
And just what do you think the kid would be doing for work and food out there in the `Piney` woods? Most small towns also have SMALL employment prospects! And FEW small towns have public transit so the kid MUST have a car or he doesn’t get to work or have a way to haul groceries either! And the kid is a modern urban model and never replaced a brake pad or bled a rusted out brake line and has NO idea where to find or even how to test a burned out ignition coil so he MUST HAVE a reliable car.....BOUGHT with money he does not have and cannot borrow!
As I said in an earlier post: the kid is SCREWED by govt and unions at every turn! He is nothing but a cash cow for govt and civil service Hogs and they are milking him (and his generation) FURIOUSLY! And with Justin Trudope set to save the `middle class` (meaning ONLY THOSE WHO LICK HIS BOOTS) using that mad spending nonsense-running up the deficit-the kids have VERY FEW real options. Better train the kids to say MOO and eat hay cause they wont have much ELSE in their cash COW lives!
And yes, the kid COULD buy an older, smaller house and renovate it....except that all the older smaller houses near the GTA have either ALREADY been renovated or have been bulldozed to make way for a monster home! There are cheap homes OUTSIDE the GTA-there was a decent little one bedroom place for sale about 20 miles north of Cobourg for only $75,000 at 2015 prices-who knows what it is now- except that its in the middle of Northumberland County and last I heard it was the poorest county in Ontari-owe-with no public transit and the kid has no car and there ain’t no work out there and the kid cannot afford to commute and doesn’t qualify for the mortgage anyway so he wont be going into the renovation business any time soon!
And some jackass Lie-beral assured the kid that Trudope has a plan-he will allow kids to skip paying student loans if they make under $25,000 dollars per year! TYPICAL Lie-beral bait and switch -the plan that LIES-and flies out of sight the moment you look for it after the election! Firstly, the `plan` has not yet been presented to parliament....and given the deteriorating economic news and allowing for the many carbon crap promises Trudope has made and then counting the cost to deal with Syrians coming here, its likely the student loan plan will never see the light of day as its one more thing we cannot afford!
And it’s a LIE-beral plan so the `fix` is IN! Just because you are excused from paying now does not mean there is NO COST! Interest on the loan never sleeps, just clicking over, year after year after year....the way some of these kids are going they will be using money from their old age pensions to pay off student loans!
Look at the `aid` supplied to laid off auto workers by Ontari-owe premier McGinty-he set up a one hundred million dollar fund for re-training....and only five percent of the money was ever used due to the massive array of nasty little strings and catches tied to the money! It reveals the the conflicting pressures on politicians being generated on one side- from voters worried about Muslim terror and crime- and other the other side simply from politician desire to buy votes and cling to power. Europe is planning to deport hundreds of thousands of Muslims (EU)
In a recent reversal, Sweden now says it will deport half of its 160,000 migrants, Finland plans to deport two-thirds of its 32,000 migrants and Germany intends to deport all migrants who arrived under false pretenses -- a number that could total many hundreds of thousands -- as well as all migrants from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, which Germany now deems "safe" countries because they are not at war.
(Considering that Muslim rapists streamed their attack on a Swedish women live on the internet, one has to wonder at the restraint of Swedes in not dumping ALL Muslim immigrants!)
Most countries in Europe, in fact, are now cracking down on migrants from Muslim countries, raising the possibility of a modern-day expulsion that rivals that of the 16th and 17th centuries, when Spain, to its shame, not only ethnically cleansed its territories of all Muslims but also of their descendants who had converted to Christianity.

Although government officials and the mainstream press initially tried to cover up the extent of the wrong-doing -- an estimated 1,000 Muslims in Cologne alone participated in "Taharrush," a practice of encircling, groping and sometimes raping women -- the extent of the assaults led to a fire-storm of outrage on social media that forced both the mainstream media and the politicians to acknowledge the problems and reverse course.

The reversals were a long time coming, given what Europeans have endured in recent years from the uncontrolled influx of more than a million migrants, most of them Muslim men with little appreciation of Western values. Sexual assaults aside -- rapes in many European countries are disproportionately attributed by law enforcement and NGOs to Muslims -- crime by migrants is rampant. Hamburg police reports 20,000 purse-snatches a year, 90 per cent of them by males in their 20s from North Africa or the Balkans. In 2014, even before the migrant stampede accelerated, 38,000 asylum seekers had been accused of committing crimes.
(One has to question the crime numbers as LIE-beral minded politicians around the world consider it racist to catalogue the ethnic origins of criminals so ethnic crime may be substantially under -reported!)
We have been coming perilously close to repeating Europe's errors.
With Europeans increasingly stating that they don't recognize their own countries anymore, and don't feel safe in it, politicians now face a furious backlash. Citizens are protesting in the streets and through social media. Anti-immigrant political parties are on the rise and often lead in the polls. Forty per cent of Germans now demand the resignation of once-popular German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Opposition to the governments' open-immigration policies doesn't manifest itself only through peaceful outlets. Mob justice is also increasing with hooded nativists intimidating and attacking migrants. With disrespect for the rule of law increasing across the board, societal breakdown has become thinkable, all a consequence of a soft-headed if soft-hearted desire to help desperate refugees.
It's easy to see things getting much worse before they get much better. For one thing, it won't be easy to identify which migrants are genuine, and are entitled to refugee status, and which have taken advantage of the chaos at the borders merely to partake of Europe's welfare benefits. German media, for example, reports that the whereabouts of half of those seeking asylum are unknown while hundreds of thousands of others, according to the German government, entered the country surreptitiously, circumventing any background checks.
Even when found, deporting migrants will be difficult, since those from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Tunisia, Morocco and other countries that do not qualify for refugee status routinely destroy their passports and other identifying documents, to prevent their deportation from Europe, while others purchase counterfeit Syrian documents to feign their bona fides. The process of finding, then justifying the deportation of illegals will be laborious and time-consuming, requiring many years during which resentments can't help but fester.
(And all these laborious and time consuming security issues will be dumped onto already debt damaged economies around the western world! With each failure to identify and deport radical Muslims in a hurry giving them time to plan their next attack!)
Many migrants won't take kindly to being deported, not least because home-grown activists will rise to their defense and because, as intelligence agencies report, the ranks of the migrants have been seeded by jihadists. Defiance by migrants, including rioting, is already common. As their defiance increases, so too will the backlash by the public, leading to both vigilantism and demands for curbs on immigration, changing the character of Western democracies. The free movement of peoples has begun to be restricted -- for the first time since 1952, for example, Scandinavians require identification when crossing from Denmark to Sweden, the upshot of regulations introduced last month to stem illegal migrants.
(We Cdns are facing troubled along our borders as Our idiot Boy Justin brings in a horde of Muslims while at the same time our most important trading partner-United States- grows ever LESS tolerant of our slack security! We are already facing economic damage to our softwood lumber and dairy industry because of our sloppy security- with Yankee law makers seeking ways to “bring jobs back to America” by CLOSING the borders! The restrictions on movement can only deepen. Following the terror attacks in Paris, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security gave notice to European nations that visas may be required to enter the U.S. in future if better controls aren't put in place, and last week the U.S. Senate in homeland security hearings raised questions about Canada's plan to absorb 25,000 refugees. Because attacks on Western soil by jihadists posing as migrants are all but inevitable, more restrictions compounding today's baggage checks and privacy intrusions are also all-but inevitable.
Canada has until recently entirely avoided the immigration turmoil, let alone civilizational threats, afflicting much of the West. Because we haven't yet recklessly accepted untoward levels of migrants, we are not under pressure to recklessly deport untoward levels of migrants, as is occurring in the liberal democracies of Europe. Yet we have been coming perilously close to repeating Europe's errors. During the last federal election campaign, a mass hysteria over the plight of migrants, and the perception that Canada was failing to be as welcoming to them as European nations, contributed to the election of Justin Trudeau, who came to office on a vow to rewrite immigration procedures in order to rush in 25,000 Syrian refugees by Christmas. When the Christmas target wasn't met, an embarrassed government decided to double down by raising the number of Syrian migrants to 50,000 by the end of this year, an impetuous decision that seems driven by the same mix of political and humanitarian impulses that blindly led so many European countries to grief.

I think the discussion about refugees can be brought to a pretty quick and sensible conclusion w/o having to suffer through long screeds! I have nothing against refugees on average, but really we should be taking care of our own people FIRST! We have people sleeping outside in sub zero weather, that isn't right, I don't give a sh*t who they are. How many $billions have we already spent on refugees. How much would it cost us to bring our poorest hundred thousand up to snuff - food and warm, clean shelter? When all that is done THEN we can start looking at refugees!
